Sadly, the film never did explain why Lily ditched Snape. It was almost like “Eh. James is cuter than you”.
@mrsentimental1995
@mrsentimental1995 14 дней назад
But it was implied. We knew since the beginning that Snape was a very suspicious person, and in Goblet of Fire movie he was a former death eater. It was implied based on how shady and we knew in movie 5, even though it was brief that James bullied him, which is why he despised Harry for unfair reason. Films are about showing, not telling, so we could imply with how harsh of a man he is, that he definitely got Lily uninterested in him and having a very unlikable personality.
@vikkran401
@vikkran401 14 дней назад
The films never even showed Lily ditching Snape so why should they have to explain it? It doesn't make any sense. Most implication we got from the film was that Snape & Lily were friends and they just slowly drifted apart during their years at Hogwarts, while Snape secretly developing a crush on her despite not being with each other
@mrsentimental1995
@mrsentimental1995 14 дней назад
@vikkran401 sharper fans would understand Snape's cryptic question to Harry on the first day they met at his potions class. A scene was removed from the final cut but we see young Lily defending Snape in the flashback when Harry reads Snape's mind and lastly, it all comes in circle in the last movie's memory scene.

@@mrsentimental1995 Is it proved? Sometimes people find thousands of messages where they aren't even meant to be. Besides, what makes Snape so great for pitying Harrys mother? Her death is technically his fault.
@mrsentimental1995
@mrsentimental1995 14 дней назад
@retryoxx8340 who said, it makes him great? It makes him a terrible person but his complex emotions and the fact that we kept questioning his allegiance and loyalty between good and evil is fascinating. Does that mean, Joker should be hated for being a psychopathic murderer? No, it makes his character interesting. Should we hate Tony Soprano who has done terrible deeds with the mafia, including murder and bigamy? No, it's what makes him interesting to watch as well! Opinions and thoughts of fictional characters are subjective.

Lily was arguably the only person who was kind to him in his whole life and also the person who warned him off about joining DEs. I don’t get why it’s so unimaginable for people to understand why he’s loyal to the such person, especially when he played a part in her death & hates himself for it for the rest of his life. Snape’s character is so well written that it’s a shame most people tend to water down his character.
@lucyk2634
@lucyk2634 15 дней назад
Exactly. I think many people had pretty healthy childhoods so they can't never understand such a deep and layered character. Deepness comes from hardships in life especially in childhood. So, happy people just don't understand his emotions and call him creep. That's very hurtful for me to hear.
@prisyrose
@prisyrose 15 дней назад
@@lucyk2634 Mmm. I think HP fandom in general is incapable of digesting characters they cannot fit into black and white boxes and Snape perfectly treads the line between good and bad. It’s like they miss one of the crucial points of the series.
@mfchc14

There a comment already on this video saying it was "just a childhood crush" excuse me??? What people don't understand is that acknowledging how real the character is, we are not implying he was a "good person." People are not black and white, they are shades of gray. Snape had good traits, aimed at the wrong things may be, but that's what makes him interesting.

Movie Snape’s story has an enormous amount cut out. You never find out Snape was the one who sold out the Potters, that he was fine with just Harry and James dying if it meant Lily lived (let’s be real - this would have disgusted Lily to no end) and they cut out the “Him?! Expecting Patronum!” meaning he never cared for Harry, he really only cared for Lily. It really cuts out the complexity of his character and makes him look like a secretly wonderful man when in reality he was just atoning for being the reason Lily died
@alesonu
@alesonu 14 дней назад
I think your wording things is incorrect, and some info. 1) He did not sold out Potters that was done by James frd Wormtail. Snape only conveyed a prophecy and Voldy decided it was Potters 2) Snape only cared for Lily, which is true, but I am sorry even if I am not evil, I wouldn't try to save my bully (I am not a saint after all, James gave him a lifetime of trauma) and he couldn't plead for Harry since he was the prophecy child. 3) Ofc he never saw Harry as Lily's son that why he used to bully him. He was bitter miserable man, who couldn't deal with his trauma od the past and vented it on a child. (Nobody said he is a saint). Plus it did not help that look wise, Harry was a carbon copy of James and it kept reminding him of his awful memories and he refused to see the lily in him and only saw it at the end of his life.
@abhishek_p11
@abhishek_p11 13 дней назад
So you think even if James bullied Snape didnt he save Snape from werewolf Remus when Sirius tipped him off? Being bullied by someone is not an excuse to save them, especially if he loved lily that much he must also respect her desicion. Ofc James was mean to snape but later James didnt ever want to kill him, Sirius tried once but James never did. Lily moved on and i dont think i would be happy if someone i counted a friend called me an offensive word, but then even the best men cannot control their anger, but Lily chose her way and was against the dark side. Snape however was influenced by it. As you said, bullying harry is one thing, but being a bad teacher, bullying every other student he sees because they breathe the same air as harry, bullying every other house except slytherin, show partiality towards slytherin, all those are not acceptable. No other teacher, however broken they were, didnt and would never do this. He would know better as his young life was filled with conflict, he would know how neville would feel like and yet he never cared. OFC the main reason he saved harry is because he was loyal to dumbledore. And also due to his love for lily. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't save someone else's life, even if it is your bully, that bully never want you dead, so yea i think its not watering down severus's character. His character is beautiful and complex and hes even has one of the best character arcs and changes. But we can't just ignore his bullying of neville. Not to mention Neville's boggart was not even the death eaters who tortured his parents to insanity, but it was Snape, because of his constant bullying. Atleast, he couldn't save lily. Least he could do was treat his son properly but then yes his mental trauma wouldn't allow him to. He is a great character but we cant ignore the terrible things hes done and even though he is one the greatest wizards, he was still a bad teacher.

I think no one else was EVER kind to Severus except for Lili. We can never over estimate the power of kindness. But maybe instead of all the dirty looks, if she had tried to teach him to be a kind person, he would have grown. Still, her friendship DID save Snape in the end. He would have become a soul- less murdering death eater without her and been beyond redemption.

Their story and especially the way it ended is a tragedy. As a Snapehead I wish Severus would have never said this awful word but he did. If he didn't then he would most likely end up with Lily and Harry would have had a different story. In a fictional timeline like this I think Neville would have been the chosen one. I also agree with Morgan- Had their friendship continued Snape wouldn't have been a DE. The problem was not the word the problem was the belief he had in it, which is the real reason why she didn't forgave him because she knew he still thinks and feels this way.

Snape is a good example of you can't save everyone from themselves. Lily was good and defended him for years yet he still hung around with future Death Eaters and called people mudbloods before their friendship ended. Plus, he was only in his 30s in the books, so it's not like he spent 50 years hung up on Lily. He turned out to be a better friend than Peter. I honestly think she reevaluated a lot of what he said, which led her to give James a chance. She and Remus had no reason to not get along and he probably liked the anti-bully reinforcement.

Regarding the promise to keep Lily alive: From what I know, Voldemort made her the offer to live, which she refused, what triggered the sacrificial protection. So he actually kept his promise to Snape and only when she refused the offer he killed her. Since she made her choice and stood in his way. Plus he would have probably said to Snape something like "I offered her to step aside and survive, but she refused", telling him he honoured his promise and it was Lily's choice to die

You know it’s really interesting how JP and SS’s relationship and interactions with Lily are different and similar at the same time. Despite JP being dead, they do serve as foils. (Though in this series, everyone is a foil to another character in some way.) Both of them are always either copying Lily or complementing her. Usually When the relationship is bad, they copy Lily but when it’s good, they complement her. 1. During the Sorting, JP was placed in Gryffindor after Lily. (Though he did already want that house.) Meanwhile Snape was placed in Slytherin. 2. Both of them had a terrible relationship with Petunia, that made Lily cry. However Snape originally dismissed her feelings before distracting her like she once did with him. Whereas JP offered to apologize for what happened and he did appear to try. (Similar to how Snape tried apologizing to Lily.) 3. Snape and Lily both have the exact same Patronus, a Doe, while JP’s animal differs, being a Stag. 4. Snape and Lily both said “Always” while JP says “Until the very end”. 5. Lily has RED hair like Gryffindor, which JP wanted while Her eyes are GREEN, like Slytherin as Snape wanted. And Those colors cause me to think of anger and tempers, which Snape definitely has and Jealousy and envy, which JP definitely embodies. 6. Both of them were incredible wizards however JP was more practical while SS was more for knowledge. 7. They dislike the others House but Dumbledore implies Snape could be a Gryffindor if sorted again and Dumbledore’s words also make it likely that James was considered for Slytherin. (JP would have a lot of the traits that Slytherin was looking for and what are the odds that both of Harry’s parents were sorted in barely a second.) 8. JP valued kindness, which is why he befriended Remus. Whereas Snape befriended Lily, who was said to be kind, because she happened to be the only magical kid his age.

I believe James and Snape both loved Lily in their own genuine way. I’m seeing way to many bitter Snape haters here making one sided character complaints without any context for their motivations or outside factors that influenced them. James was a man born with all the luck in world while the opposite was true to Snape. James was indeed born to financial and mental comfort. Two parents that loved him to the point of spoiling him rotten with the very rare benefit of being a pure blood family without their bigotry. IE James had the best possible spawn point for anyone in HP universe. Snape got the opposite in every way being born poor to an emotional & probably physically abusive family that provided only the negatives of that upbringing with bad first relations with muggles & none of the security of pure blood families. Two of the biggest life altering chances a person has in the HP world as is in the real world is where your born & where you grow up. The poorer and least advantageous it is the more likely your life is to not exceed past that. James won the first round in life but as we see with many HP characters with bad family’s there luck gets significantly better with their time at Hogwarts. Alas here’s where Snape gets the truly rare phenomenon of having equally bad luck at school as well. While James gets to go to the progressive good boy house of heroics and nepotism Snape gets thrown to the proverbial wolves of the school sanctioned house of systemic bigotry and facism. I can write an entire essay on how JK doesn’t understand how keeping social issues systemically entrenched in schooling for children is a one stop ticket to facist indoctrination but not understanding how systematic issues and bigotry work is JK’s entire character ark right now irl. Of course an 11 yr old child would get slowly twisted by living in an isolated echo chamber of genocidal facist ideology. All the while James just got even more positive reinforcement for his progressive politics. It’s the rich get richer mentality but through a socio environmental lens. Snape as an awkward anti social teen had no choice but interact with the leading death eaters of his house at the time to avoid being targets by his dorm-mates. Yes he like darks arts but that just made it easier to fall in line with leading hierarchy of his house and doesn’t make you inherently bad. We see he didn’t start out with any prejudices but was slowly indoctrinated as a child growing up in that toxic environment as any child would be by that circumstance. The last straw that broke Snape’s back was also being born in the literal worst time to be at Hogwarts during the first war. He wasn’t just thrown into the dorm of legacy bigotry but during a time of war centered around these ideologies to the point that where you were sorted during those years determined then and there where you’d fall on political lines. All these outside factors out of their control all but plotted out their stories before they were even told. As is in the real world when it comes to being born luckier than others unfortunately. For this I give James a lot less credit for how his life turned out given how easy and expected it was for him to be on the right side as he was born into it. Born to good ppl, lived with good ppl, married a good person so why wouldn’t his life read like the hero archetype. Only thing would be that despite all that he still found it in himself to be a cruel bully to almost everyone for 5 of his 7 yrs at school. He was the school bully for most of his tenure and his biggest victim was Snape who couldn’t be any less privileged than him. Let’s be real he was made head boy by Dumbledore for pure nepotism as we see him do with Harry. Dumbledore needed James as the front line soldier in the war so he overlooked much of his past to elevate his standing in his school politics. He coveted Lily from day one and sought to break her away from Snape which was the reason for his targeting of him. James found Lily too good for the likes of Snape and took it upon himself to separate her from him. Snape did not do the same to petunia as their relationship was sh@t before and after Snape. Snape was as possssive as any kid would be with the only good thing in his life. However in the end he didn’t pursue Lily after she broke off from him. He respected her choice and let her be even with James. If Snape didn’t love her or even obsessed after her like so many say then why didn’t he stalk her and try to break her up from James. He even could’ve made a love potion to force her back to him like Voldermont’s mother did , but he didn’t because he genuinely loved her in a selfless way that respected her independence. James’ torment all but denied Snape any chance he could’ve had to escape the toxicity of his house. If he had been the heroic champion that guided others from dark paths he would’ve been the hero we all needed but instead he didn’t value any of the privilege he was given and guaranteed Snape’s trapped situation. The lesson Harry learned that allowed him to succeed where his father failed was in reaching across the line to ppl he thought enemies and giving them an alternative path like with Draco and his family. This was the reason he lived through the war where as his fathers sins caught up to him with his mistake in choosing who his enemies and friends where. Snape’s cruelty came from generational abuse and trauma that is passed on and learned from your surroundings. His abusive home, schooling, friend cycles, and general life all showed him nothing but the worst of humanity and after lily’s death he blames himself and become a suicidal empty broken shell of a man at his lowest. As someone well versed in this kind of trauma it’s well known for ppl in these states to project their misery onto everyone around them. It’s not to condone but also not to judge given their situation. There’s no mental heath or therapy in HP that we know of and given Snape self loathing he wouldn’t think himself worth of saving. He couldn’t bring himself to love Harry because he was the living embodiment of all his failures and trauma all wrapped into one person that could look at him and cause him to feel nothing but agony. The true worth of his character comes from his drive to honor the memory of someone who did right by him once and feeling a duty to return the favor. He choose the very little bit of good that came to his life over the other 99% of bad and did the right thing in the end. Thats a feat unmatched by anything James did. Yes, You can say that Snape didn’t do a lot more than he did for others but the hard truth is he gave out as much good as he was given. You get back what you invest in and Snape only knew very little good that he did right by it in return. He betrayed people who accepted and respected him(which was the only reason was a death eater, no he isn’t a racist facist) in favor of saving people who hated him without any desire for something in return. That is True unconditional love by definition. It will always speak much more volume for James to have only known love and support his whole life yet still find it in himself to be cruel without anyone teaching him that. Whereas Snape who knew only the opposite yet still did so much good regardless in the end. Yes James got better and Snape couldn’t overcome his demons post Lily’s death but when looking at the whole picture with all their lives in context and what each had to overcome in order to do good I can’t give James more credit than Snape. In a fairer world where each had similar lives and healthy relationships you’d be right in holding James over Snape but seeing how unfair one’s life was it paints a completely different story.

Absolute rubbish. You know what your problem is: you can't stand the fact that James has everything in life and is a lot more successful, so you use whatever flaws he may have in order to bring him down and downplay his success. And so what if James has a much easier and better life. And by the way, James did not "steal Lily" away from Snape, Snape did that all himself by being a bad friend to Lily. James doesn't owe Snape anything, it's not James's responsibility to get Snape out of his toxic ways (he isn't Snape's father). You're jealous that James has all the privileges that Snape doesn't have.

@@paulyb7267 No, acknowledging the uneven playing field of life where social environmental factors affect people lives outside of their control, and including that in your top down assessment of a person life is the bare minimum for objective critical analysis. Sorry you just learned this now. The HP universe like our own is based in systemic inequality and societal issues. This baked in bigotry forms the backdrop to every conflict in the story such as blood racism, classism, non human racism, and slavery. The school sanctioned segregation between houses and the blood purity racist ideology they allowed to seize control of Slytherin house made for a near absolute pipeline to facist indoctrination of children. No, the reason the political lines formed near totally down house lines wasn’t because one house is evil and the other is good, it’s because they allowed systemic issues & political ideology down house lines. This kind of bigotry isn’t born it’s taught and they allowed children whose only concern was being ambitious to be isolated and groomed by toxic ideological beliefs that can and mostly would negatively affect their growth in their formative and impressionable years. Snape wasn’t a blood purist before Hogwarts and said as much to Lily when they meet. His only negative outlook on muggles was because of his only muggle relation being his abusive father and this could’ve been easily balanced out with multiple good experiences with other muggles/muggle borns in later life. However he was forced into a boarding school dorm mostly comprised of muggle hating pure bloods who were the only people that accepted and didn’t bully him. This all resulted in Snape’s slow adoption of bad beliefs throughout his formative years as it would to anyone in that situation. No it’s not James’ or anyone’s duty to save anybody else as that’s up to the person themselves to want to be saved and ask for the help they need. However it is on you when you ignore or go out of your way to alienate and actively kick down people struggling with their darknesses. Saving someone takes more than one as they need to want to be saved and require a guiding light away from the darkness and a hand to pull them out. A person can only go so far on their own, everyone needs help to true salvation. How much help and good people looking out for you, you have the quicker your betterment is and vice verse. As I’ve been explained we aren’t just individuals, we’re individuals that all live in a society together. It is everyone responsibility to look out for each other and promote the best in each other and offer help when needed, even when said people don’t know they need it. We all affect each other’s lives in our societies so we all share each other’s burdens when it matters most. James didn’t just not see a good person struggling in a tough lonely and position surrounded by darkness but he actively reinforced the worst of said persons demons and alienated him entirely from the right side. Yes Snape had a fascination with the dark arts but we never see him being actively dark, tortures, or murderous to anyone. He’s a ambitious and cleaver individual determined to push boundaries and invent spells. He’s model perfectly to Slytherin value which ain’t inherently evil. Yes Snape could’ve not befriends death eaters but when the alternative was actively tormenting him made his choice that much more simpler in his eyes. James biggest flaw was his mistake in picking his who his friends and enemies were and it cost him his and his wife’s life. Harry learned this lesson in reaching out to enemies and it save his life as with the malfoys. That lesson alone allowed him to survive his war and raise his family unlike his father. The societal institutions failed him as it failed countless generations of innocent children to be victims of unhealthy and unsupportive upbringing. JK doesn’t understand the role systemic issues has on societal outcomes and thus waves off these issues with indifference or outright apologia in the form of ‘it is what it is’. Sad truth is that James was born lucky to not be shackled with these issues & only was ever reinforced against it. Thus I give him way less credit for where he ended up than Snape who had to overcome mountains of more problems than him to also end up on the side of good.

And do you know who else also had the same home life struggles as Snape, yeah Black and Lupin, and look how James helped them and gave them the stability which they lacked in their own lives. Also, James did not kill Lily and try to kill Harry; the only people responsible for that happening in the first place are Tom Riddle himself, Wormtail, and Snape.

Contratery to Hermione, whom Harry never once disrespected. In fact the one and only Tim they were ever angry with each other was when Harry got a Firebolt, and Hermione told McGonagal, that it was likely from Sirius and cursed (she was only half right though).

I read the first book.. Harry and Ron were both mean to Hermione at times. When Ron immediately disliked her, he never once tried to hide his annoyance when she was around. When Hermione was trying to tell them not to go to the midnight duel saying, "It's really is right" or something like that, Harry said, "It really isn't any of your business." Ron always tried to shoo Hermione away because he was annoyed just by her existence. Eventually they did make amends and became friends, but I'll never forget how shocked I was at how mean they both were to Hermione, more so Ron. They redeemed themselves, so I'm not going to hold a grudge. But saying they were never mean or mad at her until the firebolt is wrong.

For the people who have read the books, or seen the films a lot and feel as though they understand the characters, we can see that Snape loved Lily. However, I have listened to Potterless (a podcast about a grown man reading children’s books for the first time, and I agree with the man, Mike Schubert. No matter what your intentions, you have to realize when it is too late. In the books it says that Snape stalked Lily, and he told Voldemort that he could kill James and Harry, but just keep Harry alive. That is very self centered, to only keep a family (Lily, because he loved her) alive because he loved her. Snape didn’t care about Harry, even when he was supposed to be protecting him. But Dumbledore put it best “You disgust me,” said Dumbledore and Harry had never heard so much contempt in his voice. Snape seemed to shrink a little. “You do not care, then, about the deaths of her husband and child? They can die as long as you have what you want?” - Deathly Hallows, a princes tale. But right there, Snape is fine with Harry Potter being killed as long as Lily lives. That’s very selfish. But as we know, or at least those who read the books, Snape killed Dumbledore on his own orders, so I guess that kind of redeems him. But for those of us who have watched Pirates of the Caribbean, “One soul is not equal to another”, long live Davey Jones, the most real resurected sea monster.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that Snape was an obsessed stalker or an incel in regards to his relationship with Lily and I heavily disagree. Lily was literally the only friend that Snape made throughout his entire life and his only escape from his heavily abusive home life as a child. It’s not easy for someone to just move on when their only friend abandons them. He also never stalked her or displayed any creepy behaviour towards her even after she broke off their friendship. To be clear, I am not at all saying that Snape was a completely good person. FAR from it. Is bullying of the children at Hogwarts during his time as a professor was undeniably inexcusable. But I really do think his relationship with Lily is genuinely tragic
@BrandonFlint-ro2ns
@BrandonFlint-ro2ns 11 дней назад
His relationship with Lily was tragic because of his own doing. He practiced dark magic and made a joke about doing so, he called people slurs (not just Lily) and he willingly and knowingly joined an army of savages. He made a conscious choice to do all of these things knowing full well Lily wouldn't agree with any of it. While I don't think he's a stalker or an incel, it is 100% true that be brought it all on himself. The "poor me I had a sh***y life" card doesn't work here.

It is so funny to me that people love to see whats on the surface but never like to delve deep. Snape hated muggle born and he used racial slur. Well yeah he hated muggles, did anyone miss the fact that he and his mother were abused my his muggle father? And then he was made fun of by Petunia (another muggle)? James bullied him but everyone loves blaming Snape for getting bullied. This is the most shocking to me. James started the rivalry, ganged up on him 4:1, abused and tortured hin publicly with everyone laughing on him and just coz Snape tried defend himself, it somehow became mutual bullying?? Are you going to stand and get yourself tortured without defiance? And if you defend then that's bullying? Everyone is after Snape being into dark arts. So what?? Can't a person have passion? Criminal psychologist have to delve into the psyche of criminal so now if they search about various crimes and the motives behind the criminal, does that mean, we have to go and torture that person coz he showed interest in motives of criminal? Yes he had one sided love for Lily and yes, it went on for all his life. But why just twist it just because he was not a saint? Can't a person with shaky moral grounds love someone?? What kinda obsession did he show? Did he drugged her and married her like Voldy's mum did to Tom Riddle? Did he forcefully marry her? Did he try to ruin the married life of her and James? Exactly what makes his one sided love suddenly obsession?? I know Snape was not a good person but making innocent thing he did in his life as some kinda hidden motive is just beyond ridiculous!!

I love HP, but tbh the more i grow up the more i realize that love is displayed so bad in it. if you love someone you'll know that it doesn't work that way. Snape was not in love, he had obsession to a mental health level. its not normal to waste your life just because you love someone, especially when that someone has a family and kid(s), they were never together + they were kids. Snape as a theoretical and philosophical character is great, when you view him within the borders of "its just a book/movie", but if you observe in real life a lot of things in the series are just wrong and represented too "fairytale-y", real life ain't that simple man, especially something like love. in my opinion love is the most difficult thing to achieve in life, to love someone in the long term(like years), you gotta be prepared cuz its hard and requires patience. you cant just love someone and risk everything for them when they had a happy family and now they're dead
