Even if Remus "could have" lied, that doesn't mean he did. And even if he did, that's for 7th year, so it doesn't mean James didn't improve more after leaving school. If Rowling intended Sirius and Remus's words to be false, she'd have shown Harry find out. Her own words condone their words, so no reason not to believe her words about James when it doesn't contradict the books. Regardless, at the very least yougn adult James is ambiguous and we don't know how much he changed.

Never really had a great life, came from a psycho family that he ran away from. His best friend who took him in, died in his early 20s. And Sirius got arrested right after that for being wrongly accused. Escaped and spent 2 years in hiding before dying. Was never able to find a woman and get family because he never had time. But he did at least get to spend a little time with Harry who he thought of as family.

Yeah I always thought that was wierd to because throughout sorcerer's stone to half blood prince I imagined a pretty awesome duel between James and Voldemort where Voldemort won

I always just shrugged it off as Voldemort being surprised but kind of impressed that anyone would have the bravery to challenge him without their wand and so ill-prepared when it’s so obvious what the outcome will be.

That surprised me too, they never actually mentioned how old James and Lily were until the last book, only that they married right out of school and had Harry not long after. Funny thing though is that in the movie version it actually makes more sense that neither set of grandparents are around to raise Harry, if Lily and James were older.

I'd just like to put this out here that James may have bullied Snape and a few others but it was mostly because Snape and slytherins were all linked to the dark arts (ofc we know that being in slytherin shouldn't dictate anything) but he was growing up at the height of Voldemort's rise so obviously it was going to make things even more tense between the houses. James was not a cruel person because he did so much for his friends. He turned to an animagus for Remus when he found out he was a werewolf when many would have been afraid (even Ron shows a bit of bias - not hating Ron though). He even was friends with Sirius who came from a family of pureblood supremacists and helped him after he ran away. Many people talk well of him. And you could say they're being nice to Harry but if James was really such an awful person, Harry would have heard from someone else of his cruelty not just from Snape. And the biggest clue to know whether James was good was because Lily married him in the end. She would not have been with him if he really was a cruel person. She loved him in the end because he changed. And even at the time he was killed; he wanted to protect both Lily and Harry. Unlike Snape, who asked Dumbledore at first to just protect Lily completely disregarding the fact that her husband and child would be killed. Knowing that Lily would be devastated with the loss of her family but only thinking of own selfish love. I do understand he was traumatised as a young boy and bullied. I do take that in account but he too became a bully. I think Snape needed therapy to avoid being an abusive teacher and to get over his obsessive love with Lily because it was NOT pure love.

That is a fair point. I mean, imagine being bullied, harassed, and practically tormented for like 7 years straight (NOT TRYING JUSTIFY SNAPE'S ACTIONS OR BEHAVIORS AT ALL). And then never even getting so much as an "I'm sorry". Like, for Snape, it would take a hot minute for him to be able to fully forgive the marauders, and then again, he doesn't have to forgive them. Like just someone or some people caused you harm that's gonna stick around for a while apologize, doesn't automatically mean you gotta forgive them and be best buds. Anyways, in conclusion, Snape deserved a genuine apology from the marauders and Lily deserved a genuine apology from Snape. Also, I think it would've added a little bit more to James's maturity arc if he (at the very least) realized that what he and his friends did wasn't good and took it upon himself to apologize to Snape personally. But that's just what I think.
