In this video we are reviewing the amazingly creative and epic locs of afropunk festival! The Afropunk Festival (commonly referred to as Afropunk or Afropunk Fest) is an annual arts festival that includes live music, film, fashion, and art produced by black artists. The festival made its first debut at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in 2005, and has since expanded to other parts of the world. Originally co-founded by James Spooner and Matthew Morgan, the festival was inspired by Spooner's 2003 documentary film Afro-Punk, which spotlighted black punks across America and later culminated in a series of live shows entitled "The Liberation Sessions" co-curated by Spooner and Morgan. The festival originally sought to provide black people an opportunity to build community within the predominantly white punk subculture and to provide a stage for black alternative performers that were not acknowledged in the mainstream and stood outside hip hop, R&B, soul, etc. To attract a wider audience, the festival shifted to include soul music and hip hop, which expanded its target demographic, attracting headliners including Ice Cube, Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz, and Gary Clark, Jr.. Musical performers now represent a variety of genres, primarily known to reflect African-American culture.

Glad to see you back giving us Loc Inspiration. I think the woman with the "buildup" may have been using Crown Paint Colors. Its a black owned company that makes temporary wax colors. I love using them but it takes a few washes to come out of locs. Its an amazing product that creates vibrant bold color for temporary use.

damn I wish I would have knew about this years ago I'm tired of people looking at me like I'm crazy when I say I align with the goth subculture. Why is it that if you're black there's only one thing you're supposed to be that is ridiculous ! I have happy to have seen this video.

Concerning the loc build up: what about folks who put clay in their locs and leave it there? Maybe that woman is into that. I'm not sure about why it's done but there are a variety of folks in Africa that pack clay or mud into their hair.
@TPLlocs
@TPLlocs 4 года назад
That is what I was thinking as well! I think it will be left in the hair since buildup of any kind is inevitable when you put any product in your locs. I am going to research a video on locs in Ethiopia and one on the Masaai so I am sure I’ll find some info on the mud! Stay tuned 😎

Why don't you still have dreadlocks? I agree with the bantu knots that are too tight. Can cause alopecia and just lots of hair loss in general.

Inaccurate. Her name is Fantah Celah. An AMAZING JEWELRY ARTIST here in Chicago. Sure there may be build up in her locks but that does not mean they will ROT or SMELL. STOP! There are AFRICAN TRIBES that use RED MUD in their hair. There are TRIBES that use CHEBE POWDER in their hair. Africa hair is ATRACTIVE in more ways than 1 & that Includes dust & lent & particles. Some ppl stay on top of it more than others but if 1 isn't washing & combing through their hair on a regular basis, there's gonna be stuff in there. This is apparent if 1 has worn a braided style for about 3 months. Even if you've washed it regularly, when you take the braids down, you're gonna see stuff.

Why all that time spent speculating on whether or not that beautifully designed work of loc art had product buildup or not? Just came off really rude and unnecessary.
@TPLlocs
@TPLlocs 4 года назад
because on this channel we talk about everything in the process of locs. Not just how it is a work of art ;). Many people come to this and other channels to get educated on how to get healthy locs. Personally, before I started my first set I used massive amounts of beeswax thinking it was necessary to start locs. I completely ruined my hair and I had to cut everything off. Could've avoided that with the knowledge in this video and the others!
