THE ERAWAN SHRINE, BANGKOK The Supernatrual history of THAILAND'S Most Famous Spirit House

The Erawan Shrine is Bangkok's most famous spirit house. The area where it sits, Ratchaprasong, has 8 spirit houses in one of the most supernatrually charged parts of the city. Stories and legends of spirits, curses, bad karma and unexplained incidents are common here. The stories go back centuries. I did some research to find out the possible causes of this phenomenom.

Pat you keep surprising me every time. I have been to this place more than a dozen times, but I was completely unaware that this place has such a mysterious background with so many ghost stories related to Erawan shrine and the areas around it. This vlog is highly informative, well researched, (with precious old video footages) entertaining and a bit scary. Good job. You nailed it again.

👍. I always heard, the reason for the placing of the shrine was the amount of construction workers that fell to their death while building the tower behind it. Now i see it was just one of the reasons

I'm from Malaysia, I have many friends that visit this shrine and pray for wealth & success in return they will have to keep their promise & return the favour once their wishes are granted. They even purposely fly just for a half day trip just to pray or return the favour, just letting you know how much importance is placed. In the east, spiritually/supernatural is places very highly & can't be taken lightly.....well unless you are Christian. Hahaha

Mahalo for your stories, Bangkok has so much history and cultural areas each of which has amazing and often spiritual backstories to them. I have a condo in On Nut, although we mainly live in the countryside, my wife and her family stayed at the condo and was determined to visit Wat Mahabut. The area around On Nut is not really touristy and the temple has a interesting ghostly foundation.

I sat at one of the bench watching those two shrines and the Erawan from one of those skywalk bridge in 2019 wondering if those spirit houses and shrines do really protect whatever it was to protect. One things for sure I did enjoyed walking around CentralWorld though the place was huge and loved the Ratchaprasong road. Went inside the Amarin plaza and found the basement creepy and dark before leaving the place quickly. At the time I didn’t know about the history of the evil forces once there. Pat - Many thanks. I was mainly aware of the Erawan shrine since I often stayed at the Hyatt Erawan during business trips starting around 1997. I noticed the numerous other shrines in the Ratchaprasong area but didn't know their intended purpose. Somewhere in my files, I have an old video I took with a digital camera of Central Word still on fire. Seemed like the fire fighters were reluctant to tend to the fire due to the snipers that were still active shooters. Back then, I had some nice reddish colored tailor made shirts that I used to wear. With the snipers still occasionally shooting, it became "unlucky" to wear a red shirt on the street, especially around Ratchaprasong intersection. It took quite a few years for Central World and Big C to come back online after the fires. But sometimes, smoke and fire is supposed to bring good luck. I miss all the commotion and the clouds of smoke from the lighted incense at the Erawan Shrine. If they ever completely ban charcoal barbecues on the streets of Bangkok, I'll be really sad.

Funny that Hyatt properties are at spots close to these shrines. Think that there's one on the side of Hyatt Regency as well. I'm learning a lot about BKK before my trip next year. Once again you cast a spell on me with this great video and reminded me of the time when I lived very close by. You have a particularly beautiful view of the Erawan shrine from the top of the BTS Sky walk and when the dancers do their work and you can hear the traditional music, it's perfect. But most of the time I sat next door with a cappuccino, which I occasionally afforded in the far too expensive Starbucks, and enjoyed the vibrations of the Pleon Chit Road. At that time I only felt a hint of bad karma (2009) during the demonstrations in Rajaprarop and the following fire in Central World. I didn't dare to go out on the street and was really afraid for my family and myself. Otherwise, this area was always a very nice place for me to stroll and enjoy the atmosphere. Thanks to you, I've now expanded my background knowledge again, which I didn't have back then. However, I noticed one small thing about this video - no cats, 5555? Thank you Pat - great job. This place got my attention after the bombing. I went there to clear the energy and check for any ghosts after the explosion. The energy in the area is totally fine now. Places that get a lot of well intentioned people giving off positive vibes will always have good energy anyway. Also in Thailand you get monks clearing a lot of energy in their travels. There is definitely a ghost here though. I wasn't able to make contact with it. It's hard to know if its one of the bombing victims or another entity that might have been in the area for a long time. When I last visited a couple of months ago the ghost was still there buzzed around me and left then followed me across the street and was gone. It might not be a human consciousness though, there are many multidimensional entities. Unless you can make direct contact all you get is the sense of the energy present. Sometimes I have been able to talk to human consciousness that has left the body but not crossed over, sometimes they don't talk. There are lots of reasons why some people don't cross over. In any case, this location is totally fine. Someone who is energy sensitive might feel that presence but there is nothing negative here as far as I can tell.

Also, what the hell happened with the bombing of the Erewan shrine back in 2015? It looked like they had suspects, then backtracked and the story disappeared. When a mystery arises, in most of the world, that's when the story gets interesting. In Thailand, usually the opposite seems to happen. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a ghost that did it. 😁

Seems to be a recurring theme of this part of Bangkok originally dominated by a certain landowner(s), and over time being pushed aside for modern development.....almost. I wonder, how does a palace become a mall? The Siam Intercontinental followed a similar path, no? From palace to sprawling international hotel to mall.

Pat, have you encountered a ghost before or experienced an unholy presence in Thailand? I felt that some of the open stretch of roads/motorways in Rayong were quite scary at night whilst driving. At some parts, it's very dark as there aren't many lampposts and you can see the mountain silhouettes. If your vehicle breaks down, then all you have is a jungle either side of you and it's very lonely. I did some research and it turns out that there is a cursed intersection with sightings of a female ghost. It has something to do with a nearby abandoned hospital apparently. There are abandoned ships floating around in the gulf as well and tourists have reported crying and moaning sounds late at night on one of the beaches.

The Prudential Insurance Bldg in Tokyo is famously haunted. It is on the site of a hotel fire accident but also a historical place for executions. But foreigners bought the Bldg. (:

Depends what hotel you're at, and how near you are........if you have a direct view of the shrine itself from the window it could attract a few spirits. Only joking!

My Thai wife is not at all afraid of ghosts, why she thinks this way I am unsure because her family members are very ghost weary.

Thanks for telling us this. I was at the shrine before it was bombed. It struck me that most of the popular shrines around Bkk was of Hindu origin. Can it be because of all the ghost movies from India, dubbed to Thai? Thai TV is full of ghost movies. As a buddhist i was suprised to see all the Hindu gods around.

Buddhism is filled with Hindu content, although the Chinese stream uses more Chinese iconography.
