ARMS is a 3D fighting game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Featuring an array of colorful characters, ARMS has a unique playstyle focused around the core concept of using extendable arms to perform moves such as punching, throwing, and blocking with a twist.
As one of the more heavily marketed titles during the launch era of the Nintendo Switch, ARMS has one of the best-selling games on the platform with over two million copies sold worldwide. Given its unique playstyle and the mass appeal during its early years, it didn't take long for ARMS to develop a passionate community of competitive players and the potential for a healthy esports scene.
Fast forward a few years and you barely hear about this game and tournaments associated with it. Despite its initial popularity and international sales success, what happened to ARMS?

Arms 2 sounds really nice, and could be what the ARMS scene really needs. Though im not sure what new features they could add. New gamemodes, longer story mode. Id of course say 2-5 new characters, but im not even sure how they would fit that many new ones in, the lineup they have is original and unique enough.
@bryguy2049
@bryguy2049 3 года назад
@@pauldeddens5349 Maybe more mechanics/options in combat. I get that's what the different ARMS are for, but maybe including at least two different punching styles added as secondary attacks besides the normal forward assault. Maybe like adding a close-range uppercut or a more intentional hook where you actually throw your arm from a 90 degree angle. I remember being in the communities online when the competitive scene was more populated, and I always heard people saying that watching the gameplay was boring. Adding more mechanics into the combat might work to bring in more competitive players.

Dude the game was only fun for the 1st week then it just felt boring. And clearly Nintendo realizes this as they now abandoned it. And if they made a 2nd one literally no one would play it since its a Nintendo switch exclusive and were getting the 2 giant consoles which will dominate for the next years. But if Nintendo decided to make a deal with Sony or Microsoft or even steam I think the game would genuinely do well as the game is limited to a very small group of people and 99% of switch users like smash more since they have it on switch the other platforms don't have it so I think it'd be a good opertunity. But they're competitors and I doubt they'd do a partner ship if they don't they won't launch it since it wasn't very successful

I feel that I was drawn to ARMS mainly because of the unique and ingenious character designs. Basing their arms off of objects that are seemingly extendable was simply brilliant!! I don’t know if anyone else feels the same way, but that’s just me.

All and all, it *REALLY* should be $40 instead of $60. You know Nintendo’s being greedy when ARMS cost the same amount as Smash, when it’s a 2 and 1/2 year old game that doesn’t have a huge legacy, or 69/70 unique base roster characters (70 including Piranha Plant).

I remember playing arms during the free week they did after the smash announcement. Beat arcade mode on max difficulty and felt the game was fun, but it really had too little content to buy it at full price, if it was a 20usd game, it will be amazing. Would totally be in if they did a sequel though.
@caseys2698
@caseys2698 3 года назад
I think it should definitely be $40 at the most. Nintendo’s just too greedy- more people would play a really awesome game if it cost $40 or less. :/ You’re right- it just doesn’t have enough content to warrant the full 1st party game price tag, especially when you could buy Smash or Splatoon 2 and get more out of Nintendo’s mediocre paid online service.
@xxProjectJxx

@pauldeddens5349
@pauldeddens5349 3 года назад
That's probably one of Nintendos biggest issues all around. They really need to understand how to price games better, especially since they effectively stay the same price for 4 years, until they drop 10-20 dollars, and by then most of the community for the game is already dead, or a objectively better sequel has launched.

I never stopped loving the game, but going into that “dark age,” as the community shrunk, you could feel the tension rising, and the whole atmosphere became way more toxic. These two examples are really what did it for me. •The owner of one of the biggest Discord servers is so committed to her “family friendly” brand, she’ll threaten to cut ties with any player or server that doesn’t uphold that image 24/7. •Recently, the most prominent TO (a white woman) completely banned a black player from entering all her future tournaments because he made a joke she decided was racist. (how very ironic) But I do miss “the good old days” so much. My hope is that if the community is revitalized, those toxic people get drowned out by the flood of welcoming new and returning players. See you in Arms 2

And it was fun reliving moments from my favorite majors. I especially appreciate the section with Pega, my favorite player. It can be pretty hard to explain what makes him so special that I would watch every tournament just to see him play, when his character, Max Brass, to me is the worst part of the ARMS meta, highlights the flaws of the game's engine, and is generally unfun to play against. He's just so good and likeable that I didn't even care, lmao. It may have failed as a tournament fighter, but it isn't quite a failure. It sold 2 million copies as of September 2018, (no updates since then) but for a console exclusive fighter, that's still pretty amazing. Street Fighter is arguably the most recognizable fighting game series of all time, and it sold only about 5 million copies as of September 2019, despite releasing on three platforms. Which evens out that per system, Arms sold about the same, or better, then the latest entry in one of the most respected fighting game series. (They both had mid 70's ratings on Metacritic for reference.)

Wasn't that a lot of sales and hype around the time of the launch of the Switch itself and heavy marketing as it was one of the first Switch titles? The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game people love and still talk about being great, but I'm willing to bet people who bought ARMS aren't as passionate about it or excited to go home play it as it was terrible in a balanced competitive way meaning it's longevity for a given player is limited at best especially when developer support gets cut.

To add to what adc rengar said, Street fighter 5 isn't really seen as a success either. It was only seen as a failure for most and is only kept alive by the competitive community. I doubt arms 2 will sell anything near what the first game did. Considering how fast the sequel is coming out I also doubt that it will be a game of quality.
@Deathnotekeeper
@Deathnotekeeper 3 года назад
First 2 million for a launch title is good but a lot of launch titles sell very well. Also street fighter 5 was only on ps4 and windows, along with it having horrible reception it still sold 5 million which is saying something especially since it wasn’t a launch title. If arms came out a year or two later I doubt it would have sold 2 million.

IMO it's all about branding and what Nintendo's perception of what "fun" ultimately is. They want to brand themselves as a family friendly company that mainly focuses on developing games meant to be enjoyed casually. I don't think Nintendo perceives "skill based competition" as being fun, because it doesn't benefit everyone equally. And you can understand that stance if you break down how competition works; in a competitive environment they'll be winners and losers, determined by the ability and disposability to foster skill. There are less people that have the necessary criteria to develop "skill" by virtue of the number of factors involved than those that don't. That's why a game's competitive scene will always be a comparatively small sample of it's general population. Time, patience, determination, ability, among other things, are resources not equally available, hence after a while the gap between the skillful players and those that aren't will widen, and the winners will be consistently a smaller niche group, compared to the losers. Being consistently a loser is not "fun" through Nintendo's eyes, which is why they don't actively support "skill based" competition.

Arms was a lot of fun - I enjoyed playing it online and from a casual players perspective it wasn't hard to understand the nuance between characters and arm combinations. If Nintendo is to support a sequel more long term then it probably needs a more robust single player experience like smash and splatoon have. If casuals aren't playing Nintendo's games, then Nintendo more or less ceases to support it - for obvious economic reasons

But it still bring me joy playing ARMS and watching the competitive scene unfolds in other part of the world. We do try to keep some competitive scene alives somewhat in this part of the world. I even tried organizing some online tournament, but nevertheless, is never easy and not many turn around. Of course, as time went on, most people moved on, including me. I still fired up the game from time to time though. And I'm so happy to see Min Min (my main) in Smash. :)

I wouldn’t say that at all. It’s just a niche style of game. It has its audience. I for one have over 1,500 Hours in ARMS. I make ARMS Tech Videos, So I Lab. There’s a LOT to learn if you actually want to get good at ARMS. -Insta-Countering (Guard-Canceling) -Ducking under punches -Chip Damage to Shield Break -Weaken opponent’s Arms to break their shield easier, or deactivating their Arms -Farming Rush -Whiff Grab Tech -Boxing (Clashing Arms) -1-2-3 Hit Combos -Teleport Dashing -EMP Waves -Shockwave Deflects -Short Dashes/Hops vs Long Dashes -Dragon Cancels and Dragon Pokes -The width between the shoulders of the characters being different, so you need different curvature with your Arms -Healing Mind Games -Invisibility Mind Games -Pillar Mind Games -Misango Totem Mind Games -Actress Aura (Slowing down Punches) -Distance coming into play -Extension Speed vs Retraction Speed -Rush Deflecting -Arm Weight Classes -Arm Weight Classes in Rush Mode being different from in Normal Play -Knowing when to Rush, and when not to Rush. -Arm Girth Differences between Characters -Yabuki Combos (Bouncing off Trampolines into Rush) -Widening Grabs by have Arms with different Homing Attributes on each Arm -Chaining -Confirming -Rush confirms -Barq confirms -Explosion confirms -Elevation Tricks and Manipulation -The thousands of different Arm and Fighter Combinations you’d have to learn how to counter -I could keep going. ARMS is like a Chess Tournament. Some may not find it very interesting. But if you have knowledge of the game, and know what it takes to actually win? It can get REALLY Intense. There are many Competitive online ARMS Tournaments hosted to this day. It doesn’t fail at all to be a Competitive game, especially once you learn how it’s played.

I feel like arms could have had a better competing lifespan if there was more casual appeal. There wasn’t much to keep a new player in, with the low amount of party modes and the small roster. The game is fun, but there was no reason for a casual player to want to explore the game’s depth because there wasn’t much content that kept casuals interested. I think at least a good story mode would be nice. Also, this is just a personal nitpick, but maybe there should be higher damage to prevent most rounds from going to timeout. Also, about what you said for smash being competitive because it’s popular, I have to disagree. The Budokai and Ninja Storm games weren’t competitive because they didn’t have any depth, not because they weren’t as popular as smash. There was nothing to discover, and you could rarely outsmart your opponent. Smash, other platform fighters, and traditional fighting games allow you to express yourself in way that arena fighters just don’t allow.

I just recently joined the competitive scene for ARMS (or what's left of it at least), it was nice getting to see sime of my friends and companions in their prime. Back in 2017/18 i was too scared to join online competitions and would just be amazed when I would hear of the achievements of those seemingly unpassable monsters of Rank 20...and later completely decimated by them when matchmaking decided to test my resolve to get good at the game. I took a long break for pretty much all of 2019, rarely opening the game at parties but no one wanted to play with me anyways, it made me feel sad and alone. Towards the beginning of this year a random spark of inspiration mafe me seek out the ARMS community, and I stumbled upon casualARMS in what might have been one of the happiest days in my history of olaying games; I got to talk to people I remembered having amazing fights against back when Ranked was THE mode, I got to play this game and share some nice memories with my new friends, I got to get better-I got to have the most fun I've ever had playing this game that I love! ARMS is far from perfect, and it still hurts that it felt as if Nintendo had left it to die. However ARMS is not dead, we may be few and very far apart, but us ARMS players truly love this game with a passion hotter than Brass's Roasters and more stupidly large than a Ramram's hitbox. I genuinely screamed and teared up when I saw the 2020 NA Open being announced, and felt extremely proud of making it all the way to Quarters in my bracket, hell I felt proud to see that someone from my bracket won the entire thing (GGs to Astro)! If anyone reading this is thinking of getting this game, don't let the voices saying the game sucks and is dead deceit you. We're here, and our community welcomes everyone with open ARMS (hehe). Come play with us! Hope to fight you later, and if not, there's always the sequel ;) Thanks for reading ~ Lachesism&c.#7384

Nintendo really are missing a trick by not supporting games and nurturing them into true eSports. Splatoon, Smash Bros, ARMS, even Mario Kart 8. They could all be "ESPN Grade" eSports, in my opinion. And Nintendo would earn a fortune from doing it, but sadly they're out of touch and they desperately need to improve the Nintendo Online experience, which they clearly have no interest in doing. They want to focus on their games being casual, family friendly and accessible. They don't realise you can have both at once. Just take a look at the Pokémon series. Little kids can play Pokémon casually, but there are also huge tournaments hosted every year with massive prize pools and even scholarships.

Solid video. I had played Arms for quite a long while during it's time it was having updates. My main personal concerns at the time was that the game had too much health for the general match-up and the length for each round. I felt like if every fighter had 750 health, there'd be fewer time-outs and just enough punches, grabs & rush-attacks to not feel uninteresting to the spectators, but that's just me. I cannot wait to see who the rep is going to be for Smash this Month.

I love ARMS. I has this intensity that I just can't get enough of. It's really brilliant in a way. They wanted to create a behind-the-back 3D fighting game, but the problem was judging distance. So instead the developers made combat happen at a distance, an put the skill around your ability to move around the arena. In that sense, ARMS really emphasizes the "3D" nature of it's combat similar to how Smash emphasize the platforming aspect.
