I'd change the Hario grinder to a Timemore C2, otherwise perfect recommendations!

exactly! replace black mirror with any scale possible, however any steel burr makes difference. Grinder is the most important.

As Hario owner I second this opinion. It is absolutely impossible to make a good coffee with that thing. Not to mention your hands will fall off.

unlikely they recommend a chinese grinder, considering their sponsorship with commandante who are suing the shit out of anyone who makes better grinders than them.

If you are cheap af, get this: Buy normal aeropress, no V60. You can still brew without the plunger, it will be no bypass however. Dont buy the scale, I have it and its great, USB C charging is nice. Normal 5e scale does the job and you can time with your phone. The grinder is not nice to use, it gets stuck with harder light roast beans often. The timemore grinder is more expensive but you wont hate hand grinding with it. Use normal dumb kettle tbh Water filtrations depends on your water. You can look up your water quality online. Coffee beans is super important, try to buy the freshest that you can.

Great beginners video. I would agree with the Aeropress Go, love mine. The second preferred method for me is the Clever Dripper. I have the larger size and for me this lets me brew 2 cups at a time. Thanks.

Of the things that improved my brewing experience a good grinder was by far the most impactful. Second was the water. My water is really, really hard. Cutting it 50/50 with RO water makes it just right for my tastes. Too much RO makes the coffee flat and not enough makes it, I don't know, taste more like the minerals and less like the coffee if you follow. But a close third was the scale. I had an old kitchen scale that measured in grams but not by tenths. So, often times I was unsure if my 20 grams was on the edge of 21 or 19 and while this sounds like a small difference, the consistency now is something that I can taste in the cup. Just another variable gone. Plus, measuring by weight seems to be way more consistent too. I tried weighing out in a measuring cup to see just how much of a difference there was at just below and above the line on a 250m cup and it is like a 25-gram difference one way or the other, which is a lot. Now, while I love my gooseneck kettle (for its hold temperature feature), I honestly think it was the least impactful. In fact, I had to relearn how to pour--lol. Obviously good coffee helps but honestly, I feel that even mass market beans are improved when using good brewing methods. Anyway, I love videos like this. Having been in a similar situation to your editor, not so long ago, I can relate. As always, your videos are enjoyable and valuable. Please keep up the good work. Thank you for the time and effort you put into the community.

I started with a smaller set but quite similar: the same Hario grinder (now my office and travel grinder), v60 in size 2 (easier to get filter paper) and a scale with similar functionality.

I actually started drinking coffee a month ago and just bought my starter kit which was quite similar to what you guys got but a bit more minimalistic: I got the hario mini slim plus grinder and an aeropress! I already have a filtration system on my tap and a kitchen scale, so I'm all set! Thank you for all your videos, I've been learning a lot lately!

One other thing to try if you like the taste but can't do too much caffeine in a day. A moka pot with fine ground decaf makes an amazing base for a dessert drink

I have the same brewers in my arsenal. I tried other brewers as well but these two, Hario V60 (plastic) and Aeropress Go are the ones I prefer for portability and I take them with me in when I travel.

My original setup included some of the Hario grinder and the original AeroPress. I already had the Brita filter and a digital kitchen scale and used my cell phone for the timer. Still using an ordinary kitchen kettle, which is fine for the AeroPress. Since then I have upgraded the grinder and the scale.

I probably would spend a little more and take a clever dripper instead of the v60, because it offers the ability to similarly do regular pour over, but also to use full immersion, but way more comfortable than the aeropress does, in my opinion.

I was given a 9 cup camp percolator so thats what I use for making larger batches. But I bought a cheap moka pot to make fine ground decaf in for dessert drinks. But I also bought a cheap 6 cup French press for most mornings now. The wife works at a coffee shop so I get some good coffee at a good price. Mainly just want a grinder now

I have a similar set up for my at home brewing. I use a Cuisinart variable temperature kettle (I’ve used it for years, very solid), and decant into a classic Hario gooseneck pouring kettle. I use a Britta water pitcher. I use the same Hario Mini ceramic grinder (this is the weakest part of my kit, I’ve been planning on upgrading). I also use the Escali Arti scale (no timer, I use my phone). For brewers, I use the standard size Aeropress and a Kalita 155. I am brewing only for myself, so these brewers are perfect. I have lots of other tools for brewing as well (V60, Chemex, Hario siphon, Espro P7, SoftBrew, even a good size Vietnamese Phin), but I use those tools mostly for work and the previous list for at home brewing. Yours is a great list and perfect for the at home coffee enthusiast.

Brewer: you'd want to explore two kinds of brewing style; 1. Percolation brewer: V60 2. Immersion brewer: Aeropress Go (I strongly advise getting this first if you want to brew coffee on the go) Or Hario Switch as it can do both percolation and immersion style brewing. Especially if you just need to brew coffee at home. Grinder: Timemore C3/C2. Scale: any generic cheap coffee scale is fine. Kettle: any gooseneck kettle is fine. Even the cheap one is surprisingly good for beginners. ☝️That was my recommendation to my friend last week. I'd recommend to put more of your budget into grinder. It'll be a world difference in tasting, compared to cheap ones.

It'll depend on the used market in your country, but you don't have to buy everything new. I have a scuffed but perfectly good AeroPress and a Hario Buono stovetop kettle that I bought on eBay for a fraction of the "new" price.

For those who are able to buy from aliexpress - yuropress paper filters for aeropress, same as original (I own both right now), cost me about 16-18$ for 360x5 filters.

I'd say if you have an induction cooktop, the better option would be to buy a Hario Buono kettle. You essentially get a high-quality gooseneck kettle that can boil water just as quickly, if not faster, than an electric kettle. Moreover, it's likely to last you longer, as there is no electrical circuit to break. Just make sure the kettle is an original Hario one made in Japan. Those made in China are of lesser quality.

Yeah actually I don’t quite understand the hario slim pick, that grinder just doesn’t compete at all with the C2 or C3 for the same price
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip Год назад
Well, there is a huge price difference between Hario Slim (20-25eur) and C2 (60-70eur) in our area. Otherwise I agree the grind quality is incomparable. I would suggest C2 if the price is the same (or similar). I still believe most people will sooner or later switch even from C2 to higher level grinder. That’s +200eur though so I didn’t think it was justifiable for the beginner brewing kit.
@LorenzBarcelona
@LorenzBarcelona Год назад
@@EuropeanCoffeeTrip ahhh I see, at that price gap, it’s much more understandable! In my area, the two are so close on both the used and new market that the c2 is just the default! In fact the Porlex 2 actually costs more than the C2 here! It’s crazy that some people still go for that thing

For a 150 euro budget the way to go is to buy aeropress and spend the rest of the money on the best grinder you can afford. Buying used might be a good option.

1zpresso Q2 ($100) + Hario switch ($40) and/or Aeropress GO ($30). no kitchen scale, no water filteration, no kettle. that person should be able to make great coffee effortlessly and consistently. that'd make them unable to go back to bad coffee. fast forward 2-3 months, they'll have a $5000 coffee setup.

Yea, 50 euro for a scale and 20 euro for a grinder is kind of ridiculous. I use scale from aliexpress with 0.1g precision, its perfectly fine and cost like 3 euro. Even regular kichen scale with 1g precision would be ok

I would rather get a proper grinder and eventually a scale. At home definitely prefer an espresso based drinks, not wasting time for plastic aeropress or pourover.
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip Год назад
Good grinder is in €200 category in our opinion which is too much for this use case (and for many people when we discuss the topic). I disagree with home espresso suggestion - to make a decent espresso, it would cost significantly more + it requires a deeper knowledge imo.

@@EuropeanCoffeeTrip At that point I can agree with You. I'm simply not suggesting an espresso machine for a gift, I'm assuming that I already have one 😉 then, a gift that helps make better/easier beverage. Which in home, for my personal preference, is cappuccino to be precise. Well I don't find it to be more difficult to make a cappuccino that I enjoy, than doing a recipe for pourover.

I get this is just a RU-vid video but.. Honestly suggesting the Hario grinder but an expensive scale is really poor advice. Get any cheap Amazon scale and get a Timemore or 1zpresso grinder. The Hario grinders are TERRIBLE compared to the brands I mentioned.

I hear you but if you watch the full video, I gave a context to our choices. I believe most people would/will upgrade even from Timemore or 1zpresso grinders (in relatively short time if they get hooked on specialty coffee). As I mentioned in this video - my general suggestion would be a) let cafe/roastery to ground for you in a small amount b) get +200eur grinder for home. Both options didn't qualify for the use case presented in this video.
