I'm binge watching your videos! So many interesting stories presented so well. Thank you! As for Anula, my guess is that she's a mix of made up cautionary tale and a real person. But she didn't live to write the histories so her story is written by men who probably didn't like her very much. She could very well have been a successful ruler which went against the male dominated leadership. The number of husbands killed at her hands is pretty extreme and might be an exaggeration. Who knows! What fun to speculate on her though because she sounds like she led an interesting life either way.

There's quite a bit of coins found on the island that were issued during her rule.. 3. There are also stupas and inscriptions constructed by her.. So overall; she was definitely involved in the politics of the island and was on top of it for the most time...

As it was written down 300 years after her reign, I'm pretty sure some things were embellished and exaggerated. Her husbands were exceedingly more unlikely people to get on the throne, which suggests a created narrative. She also doesn't gain any power or wealth from killing off her later husbands. I mean, a carpenter or a monk won't have any land or power to inherit. Plus, she's the queen, so she can have all the side-guys she wants, without having to marry and pull out the poison, when she's done with them. Maybe she poisoned her first husband, but what's more likely is that she was completely villainised for one reason or another. Being a woman comes to mind, but maybe she was simply disliked.

But...anything written in the past (and even present, depending on the author) about women who held power, influenced others, or played a part in an historical event should be extremely scrutinized, if not down right "taken with a grain of salt". Everything written by MALE scribes was manipulated to keep women second class. It's very likely the Roman Catholics pulled the five excluded books from The Holy Bible because women of power and influence were written about in them. IMO, it's more likely than not, that Mary Magdalene was a prophet, not a whore, who became Jesus equal partner in life, bearing his children. Ever wonder why the Holy Mother disappears when he's about 12, and doesn't return to the scripture until his execution? I've always believed she was much more than a birth vessel and wet nurse. Sounds like an east Indian Lucrezia Borgia-style rewrite by male historians. Find a horrible period in history, pin it on a woman complete with a ghastly story that has some mysterious grain of truth in it somewhere deep in oblivion, and write it 300 years after she's been burned to death. (Maybe.) Hmm. And our nation didn't even exist 300 years ago... It was still passionately loyal to the Crown!
