I will be taking you to 19th century Edinburgh where the subject of anatomy was still being studied in order for doctors to understand how to perform surgery and to learn even more about the human body. But back in the 19th century in order for a doctor to become skilled at the art of surgery and knowledgeable in anatomy they would need a supply of corpses in order to practice on. However, where throughout history dead bodies were common due to people being executed, this was no longer the case as in 1823 the Judgement of death act saw the numbers of crimes punishable by death in Scotland drop significantly. This would lead to an extreme shortage of dead bodies available.

What a coincidence you covered this, we were in Edinburgh just last week and went to the surgeons museum where you can see a fascinating exhibit on this awful pair including a death mask and skull!

Yikes- how awfully gruesome! I think they should ALL have been charged- the wives as accessories, the Dr because he probably knew murders were taking place- but couldn't care less...just awful.. 😨😲🤪

Hi Ollie.... I think doctor knox should have been brought to justice. He must have known these men were murderers. I've heard of grave robbers. This story made me feel ill. 🤢😬 Thanks Ollie for frightening me. 😵

It comes down to an argument about the fruit from a tainted tree. How should we regard knowledge gained by amoral means? As to the co-conspirators? The laws were as they were. i would have had 5 skeletons on display at the Royal Academy! But then, i'm morbid like that! Good job Ollie, the history of Burke and Hare has always been incredibly macabre. They were psychopaths. I remember reading that people were terrified of having to resort to the workhouse, and the fear of dying there if they were elderly, unwell due to long term poverty, or dying in childbirth, because a person dying in the workhouse would be a legally permissible specimen for dissection in British hospitals. Thank you for this very interesting yet repulsively macabre presentation of serial killers.🇦🇺

According to Wikipedia Judgement of Death Act 1823 didn’t apply in Scotland…. The Bloody Code (1700- 1823) inc up to 200 offences which carried the Death Penalty inc simple grammatical errors even an idiot would know … 😂

Just a little correction Ollie. Murederous? yes Body Snatchers? No. Burke and Hare never unearthed a dead body during the whole of their brief career. With th epassing of Old Donald. they simply chanced upon an opportunity of getting easy money.

To answer your Q Ollie the laws would have to be changed to make possible what they were doing (I know you know this already) & speaking of corpses, there is still on going arguments about cremation vs burial though this planet is running out of space for burial & in Switzerland they can only be buried for 20 years or pay a big fee to keep the dead in place as I understand the laws there
