Welcome back to Ellen's Fear Academy! At the end of October on Outside Xtra and Outside Xbox, we celebrate Halloween with spooky streams and call it Hallowstream! Sadly Ellen doesn't do well with scary games, but she wants to be brave enough to properly join in this year. So, team OX are here to coach her through some spooky games as preparation! @Michael Williams it's not annoying, it's exactly like two friends hanging out over a game. Reminds me of some of my best gaming memories with a friend on the couch. If you're not enjoying yourself, this website has many other videos you may find more to your taste, and hopefully you won't feel compelled to whine in the comments section of those.

Love these two gals! Love how each person in the observation booth brings a whole new vibe. Luke was supportive, Mike was giving advice while also laughing at Ellen’s misery, and Jane is just the friend who loves drama and is completely chilled while you get murdered lol

After watching Ellen's solo streams I realized that I enjoyed her content exponentially more when paired up with someone else. Don't get me wrong, Ellen is tremendous. But her reserved style of solo play lacks the pizzazz of an Andy or a Luke stream. Conversely, Ellen has a hidden, fun multiplier that is activated when she's paired up. All my favorite combos feature her. Mellen, Lellen, Allen, etc. Mike on the other hand is brilliant, solo or paired.

Don't worry Ellen, you can get your revenge by murdering them all in Among Us. Ellen handled this better than the other two, especially once the zombies appeared. So that was nice to see. But oh dear, Dead Space next week. Each person brings something new to these streams with Ellen, which I absolutely love.

Same along with Andy. So was pleased when Jane returned for Poppy Playtime for the penultimate session of last year 😃 Even if she wasn’t as brilliantly evil as during this one. She was still brilliantly funny though especially with her twisted very funny joke in response to mommy’s threat and not hiding she found Ellen’s face funny too when she realized PJ was going to eat her face again 😂🤣😂🤣

Missed this live thanks to a 9 hour Zoom call. It did remind me of a few old videos where Jane explained she had an interesting relationship with the horror genre. I'd love to see various of the OX crew discuss a few different genres and what they think about them in general (so not only games but movies, books etc. as well). Jane could elaborate on horror, Andy and Mike could be salty about Tolkien in a fantasy genre discussion and so on. Anyway, thanks for yet another fun Fear Academy.

@Bleh Funnily enough, darkness and playing alone don't affect me that much. It's the dread of starting a horror game. I've heard good things about it from my mates as well. I prefer atmospheric horror to cheap jump scares.

@@thegreatpineapple4425 There's not many jumpscares, at least not intentional ones. They're mostly due to game mechanics, like when that one zombie was not actually dead for good and it grabbed you as you walked by. Its very atmospheric though. You definitely feel trapped and alone for most of it.

At first Luke was a touch callous, but we know he's a softy at heart so it can be forgiven. Next Mike was entirely unhelpful, but he does not know the meaning of fear, so that is to be expected. He did at least commiserate with Ellen (as Isolation is indeed one of the most terrifying games there is). And then there was Jane, gleefully eating snacks while Ellen de-evolved a little. X'''D On a related note, I REALLY want to watch bad horror movies with Jane. I think she an I are similarly broken. If I don't break out in uncontrollable laughter at least 3 times during a horror movie, it has failed.

I'm finally catching up on the Hallowstreams and I love Ellen playing one of my all time favorite games. Can't wait to see her reactions. This makes me miss my boi Ruvik so I might play a bit of Evil Within again now. EDIT: Just to add a couple of tips for anyone who reads this and wants to play TEW. Increasing stamina is paramount, get that over health. Search for first aid boxes(different from the syringes) because they regain your full health and give you a permanent increase to your health when you use one. Also in the save room, look in the cells and the main room to get extra bits of story and to collect newspaper and missing person posters and put in the world keep your eyes peeled for angel statues to break for keys to goodies in the morgue cabinets in your save room. I've played this game a lot, possibly too much. 😂😁

Ellen's setting up a full-on streaming workstation, nice. High quality audio is always highly appreciated! EDIT: Ellen has got some kind of auto-adjustment on her mic that's messing with her volume. It could be the noise gate but my guess is it's something to do with either windows 10 mic settings or OBS (or whichever other capture software you use). You can prevent applications from automatically adjusting mic settings either through the Windows 10 sound menu in the control panel or through the applications' options themselves. Could just be the mic drivers too, doesn't hurt to re-install them.

The sequel is no where near superior. The story is worse, the horror atmosphere is basically gone, and it plays more of like an action game than a survival horror

I loved both games. They've been some fresh air in the survival horror genre that felt rather dry for some time, even though they didn't invent the wheel or anything. But seeing how scared Ellen was at the beginning, I am not sure how she would react to the parts with Laura... did she play the parts with the Ghostlady in Evil Within 2? Those optional levels where also rather scary I think. I am also looking forward to Phasmaphobia, that game would propably break Ellen. I am not as scared but that game is tense in my opinion... watching is fine, but playing... damn...

Man this is why I personally find games where you either can’t die or at least where it is very difficult to die to be much more frightening. As soon as I have died just once and have to replay a section, it completely stops being scary and is just annoying. Once you have died and replayed a section twice (or a half dozen times in this case) all tension has completely left the game. I always play games like this on easy, because honestly it’s scarier that way. Which is dumb. For the same reason I think horror games should never be more than 4 hrs. PT and Amnesia do a great job with avoiding this as a problem. In fact, I found Firewatch, Gone Home and Ethan Carter scarier than the Evil Within. Maybe when AI directors become more sophisticated this won’t be an issue, but for now, I will play this stuff on easy mode.

That was awesome but having Jane in the observation chamber is cheating. You can't be afraid with Jane, her sassiness wards the monsters away XD

these game snapshots with ellen are a bit bitter sweet their so good and the dynamic works so well but i want so badly for them to do the full story, the evil within and resi 7 were just the best and have such a great narrative especially evil within (i think i saw something about evil within 3 coming in 2021) p.s. was waiting for jane to continue the thought with the green soup+ green brain soup = split pea-brain soup.
