In this video we will look at the work of Erich Maria Remarque, the evolution
of the movie-adaptations of his 'All Quiet in the Western Front' book released in 1929.
The consequences on his life because of it during the Nazis being in power in pre-WW2 Germany,
what were the dangerous messages of his contained within his work that made him a subject for
elimination by Hitler's and Goebbels command banning the book and original movie in 1933, and finally, critique the movie-adaptations themselves.
If you aren't depressed enough yet after watching the video, embark with me on a journey of exploration trying to find answers to the old "if one does evil for the greater good, did one become evil himself?", "can you do violence for greater good fighting evil, without becoming a monster in the process yourself?" in my brand new Fiction tribute book-series to Linkin Park music band.

6:48 Wrong. The guy at the start is named Heinrich Gerber. (Or something along those lines, I know he is named Heinrich something.) The protagonist remains Paul Bäumer throughout the movie until his untimely death, just before the war ended. When Paul receives his uniform, the name tag the officer rips off is that of Heinrich as Germany had to reuse these uniforms. It seems like someone wasn’t fully paying attention to the movie.

Or watching the video, your timestamp doesn't seem to correspond to anything you claim. I still have no idea what you're even referring to.

To me the best story (movie and book) of WW1 is Dalton Trumbo's _Johnny Got His Gun and Went to War._

@@pibmovieclips You said, "...takes it even further. The movie starts with the main protagonist being already dead, and then recalling all the events that lead to his death." This is factually incorrect. The movie starts, as the OP points out, with Heinrich Gerber, a cannon fodder, who dies. You then see the actual protagonist receive the old uniform of this dead cannon fodder, and follow Paul through the rest of the movie.

@@erseshe Ah, that makes more sense now. Looks like I will have to re-watch the movie, because the impression I had (maybe wrong one) was that the bodies in the train had the main protagonist in it - after the fact, and then the movie re-start how that happened. But this version would have made more sense I guess. They must have looked similar or something... I will re-watch it again one of those days, it was a great movie. I guess I stand corrected then.
