Rick's ability to get into people's heads and play mind games with them is heavily understated throughout the series. Both Shane and Negan fell victim to this. Hell even some Saviors in Season 8 like you mentioned fell for his manipulation tactic. I wonder if he got these skills during his time as an officer. Always a treat seeing you cover Walking Dead and Rick Grimes. Honestly I miss seeing Andrew Lincoln every Sunday night So I am pretty excited for the new show tbh

I've always thought that lincoln learns that over the show via encounters like the governor. As the show went on people got more isolated and hostile, like society was "decaying" like the zombies and title screen, affecting those who are still alive. I dunno the show can sometimes drop the ball on aspects like that
@panspermiapancakes
@panspermiapancakes Год назад
I don't think his ability to manipulate was necessarily learned on the police force through any type of training. Shane was also an officer, he'd be aware of the tactic being applied on him. It's a learned trait from someone who has been in dangerous situations and at a disadvantage and his words become distractions while he displays passive body language and using your emotions (weakness) against you. He identified the traits that makes Shane human and pulled on his heart strings, the same way he did with Negan while mentioning Carl. He also attempted it on the Governor right before the final assault on the prison. He failed though because the Governor was too far gone at that point so appealing to his emotional side was never going to work. Had Rick's speech been successful, it's highly likely that Rick would have killed the governor the moment he was given a chance. The Governor was right when he said it will never work, he had done too many horrible things to them. I think it's part of the reason the show writers didn't give Rick the "kill" for the Governor and instead gave it to Michonne and Lilly for revenge purposes. Rick failed to persuade him and then failed to defeat him in one vs one combat and then failed at saving his home at the prison. If it wasn't for Michonne, Rick would have died that day, the governor outmatched him at everything. lol I'm not trying to shit on Rick, either. lol Just sharing my perspective on Rick's abilities to stay alive and his failures when using the same tactics on someone who is better at it than he is.
@thelegacyofgaming2928
@thelegacyofgaming2928 Год назад
@@panspermiapancakes Bingo. The Governor was really the only character who was a better bs'er than Rick. He knew that Rick was lying and didn't fall for it, while every other villain falls for some sort of emotional pull. I would say this is also largely due to the fact that the Governor was more bent on revenge than any of the other villains, as Negan didn't have anything really taken from him when he was tricked, and Shane had no real reason to kill Rick so he was susceptible as well.
@senvr11
@senvr11 Год назад
@@panspermiapancakes I agree, I think the big thing about the early 3 seasons was how everyone was degraded from their first appearances and old ways. I think it's essential to Rick's character that he had learned this during the apocalypse as a survival mechanism
@TwoBs
@TwoBs Год назад
Andrew made that character his own to where there will never be another like Rick Grimes when it comes to shows as a whole. There’s been a lot of copies, but his performance in this show has become so iconic that TWD is synonymous with Rick. He’s the first character the majority will instantly think of - not because he was the group leader, but because his character is what made people tune in for the longest time. It was seeing what he was going to do next for his people. Off topic, but I like how Gabriel goes from “but this is the Lord’s house” to “God’s not here” by the end of the series. I really didn’t like him early on, but grew to enjoy the whole “the vengeful father protecting his family by rooting out evil” thing he had going on by the end.
@nate4238
@nate4238 Год назад
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Shane's body language when he first sees Rick joining the group is worth mentioning as well. He conveys joy and relief that his longtime friend Rick is alive and is genuinely happy to see he succeeded in saving him, but I also detect a hint of pain in knowing that his "affair" with Lori is ending. I think in the early days of the apocalypse, even Shane would be hugging Rick after seeing his friend and partner alive unless he wasn't completely happy to see he made it. Just my two cents, let me know if you agree, Enigma. I love your videos and have been trying to apply them myself, I just want to know what you think as an expert on the matter! Keep it up!

Lori also looks a bit more worried than she is happy to see her husband.
@TwoBs
@TwoBs Год назад
@@Courier_Seven Worried, yes, but she also looks rather confused - like she’s looking at Shane as if she had been told he was dead by him, but yet now sees her husband very alive and well right in front of her. I know a lot of people really dislike Lori, with part of it stemming from her supposed quick jump to Shane and only seeing it as surface level “but she got with his best friend” type of complaints, but it’s been obvious from the jump that he had a thing for her before the world came crashing down. He jumped at the opportunity to take Rick’s place. He manipulates and lies. Always coming up with big elaborate stories to make himself appear as if he did all he could. He never tried to go back to help Rick or confirm it for himself. Out of sight, out of mind. He saw a golden opportunity when she was at a weak point believing she lost her husband, and constantly made a point to let her know she and Carl needed him for protection. He took that opportunity. It’s why he was so fixated on telling Rick when in the field that he’d protect them because Rick couldn’t. He actually believed it because he needed to justify to himself why he was going to kill him. He even mentioned how she “got over it” before, making it known he comforted her and no doubt helped convince her Rick was gone, but all at his benefit. He even came up with another elaborate story to tell to make it seem like he did all he could to cover for more manipulation. I hate how early Shane was killed off. Truly a fantastic character that I wish the show delved into further with how well he’d manipulate and lie.
@itgbeatmakerz3709
@itgbeatmakerz3709 Год назад
@@TwoBsthink most people dislike lori for valid reasons. It definitely was not her fault that the affair started. She was lied to by Shane (which I also think his lie is understandable albeit potentially cowardly). Maybe he really did think Rick wasn't breathing? I personally would never shack up with my dead wife's best friend weeks after her death, but I understand why she did. She probably felt vulnerable, insecure etc. And Shane was the closest thing fulfilling her needs. I think the part that makes everyone dislike her is the divide she caused between Rick and Shane. Once Rick got back the thing to do in order to keep her family in tact was to shut that shit down with Shane. Instead she kept giving Shane crumbs of hope that maybe things could possibly continue. Maybe in her head it was her being nice to Shane but generally women tend to understand complex emotions way better than men. She definitely knew that Shane was into her still, much more than just the sex. If anything she should have 100% stood by Rick. After Rick killed Shane (in self defense) Lori had a disgusted look in Rick. I think that look she gave Rick was the literal nail in the coffin. She should have immediately hugged him or at least acknowledged how he must be feeling having just killed his best friend. That look she gave changed everything. Its the reason Rick became completely distant from her during the prison arc. It let Rick know that basically if he wanted any semblance of a family especially with his children then he had to kill Shane or else the situation would have continued. It let him know how much of an impact Shane had with Lori and that basically if Rick died then there was immediately someone there to replace him within weeks. Even someone as strong as Rick would have a hard time coping with this. I think people in general understand this and as a result disliked Lori.
@SaddenedSoul
@SaddenedSoul Год назад
@@itgbeatmakerz3709 Great breakdown, and this is what makes Lori one of my favorite characters--very complex and conflicted just like the other two leads. She had feelings for Shane and commiserated with him and therefore could not let him go. I think she recognizes her inability to comfort Rick in that pivotal moment and hates herself for it.

I think the aspect of Rick and Shane knowing eachother since they were in at least in high school is very much overlooked here Rick referred to Shane as his *_brother_* at least once. Solid video. The other major point before this would be Herschel's death, as that's what truly makes Rick go off the deep end. After his wife's passing, Herschel is what brings him back to sanity and helps him try to maintain his humanity, but once the Governor brutally kills him after Rick begs for them to be at peace and coexist, Rick loses all hope in anyone outside of his group and turns into a savage.

They were both "Officer Friendly" at the start, but that was changed by the apocalypse damaging their moral compass. They both have serious mental issues in season three, after the deaths of walker Penny & Lori. In season four Philip, and Rick both try to flee from the immorality they embraced in the prior season. That was at the end of the first episode of Season 2. So I can see why he confused it lol that first episode felt completely different then the rest of the season.

Here's an interesting question: will desensitization change us for the better or worse? Can someone still be happy after (recovering from) a traumatic event, or will that one (or multiple) traumatic event(s) chip away who they once were? =o

I think Rick risk the interaction with the 2 guys in the bar in season 2 because of the mirror,if the one behind move he start with him and turn around and deal with the one "unarmed" but the one in front moved first so its the other way around. He was clearly affraid of the situation and did'nt want to kill them but had to im sure he was also confident because he had training and they did'nt

just so you know most people experienced with combat can look straight while knowing every single movement in their peripherals and behind them with their ears. Its simply a warrior thing. it doesn't apply to normal modern civilized people.

Around the 5:00 mark, isn't Rick just exhausted? Athletes (sometimes) put their hands on their hips late in a game - is that to show confidence? I thought they were exhausted from the previous actions in the game, so Rick is exhausted from escaping Atlanta after nearly dying a bunch of times.... maybe?
