Well, you did forget the Kingdome in Seattle, which opened in 1976. Though built on the cheap,, it was an engineering marvel, featuring the world's largest self-supporting concrete roof. It was imploded in 2000

@@briankady1456 I grew up going to the King Dome. And as a child in the 80’s I remember the excitement walking up seemingly ENDLESS ramps to get to the 300 level lol. And when you say built on the “cheap” you’re not lying 😂 it cost $79 million to build. And when those ceiling tiles started falling in the 90’s the roof repair was something like $100 million. And was still being paid off by the city when they imploded it to make room for the current Seahawks/Sounders stadium.

The first retractable roof was actually Mellon Arena ("The Igloo") in Pittsburgh (1961). The arena was originally designed as a concert and/or opera venue, but was quickly remodeled into a hockey arena. The roof could open, but it was a hassle and difficult to maintain, so they rarely did it. Years later, a new scoreboard made it impossible to open the roof.

BC place stadium in Vancouver used to have a Teflon roof but it later got transformed into somewhat of a retractable roof powered by cables.

Those Teflon roofs are actually inflated by fans that ran along the top ring of the facility. They were incredibly costly to maintain, and repair. Also if there is large amounts of snow you need to remove it otherwise the roof will collapse as had happened in Minneapolis

The Superdome in New Orleans is amazing. It was definitely built to last 100 years and way ahead of its time. I’m so glad the city decided to keep it versus building a new stadium.

Ford Field's "warehouse" was formerly operated by the old Hudson's department store. It now holds concessions, suites, the press box, the radio and TV booths, and office space that the Lions lease to companies.

Buffalo recently announced plans for a new open-air stadium for the Bills, but given how much public money is going to be spent, I think they should have explored building a dome, to get more use out of the facility. There probably won't be many new retractable roof stadiums build, as that adds about a billion dollars to the cost of the stadium. It is more effective to be able to move the grass field in and out. Buffalo was actually supposed to build a dome in the 1960's, but someone embezzled the money and they were forced to wait a few years and build Rich Stadium.

Actually, a dome that is retractable could be done cheaper if they use a fabric roof like a tent but in this area that is a bad choice as they get even more in big storms then what the Vikings get when they had the collapse.

This would have been back when the Bills were in the AFL and prior to Rich Stadium which came along in the early 70's. I propose that the city of Buffalo and the taxpayers of Western New York could save a boatload of cash by retro-fitting a DOME over the existing structure there in Orchard Park. The idea of building a new stadium downtown with a dome but having only 62,000 seats (about 12,000 fewer than at Rich Stadium) is asinine. Bills fans deserve better than that. They deserve to have a venue that has a large capacity (70,000 or more) with excellent egress and infrastructure (that's already in place), tons of parking (already in place) to where the tailgating by the Bills Mafia can continue to grow unabated. As a Chiefs fan the mere mention or thought of Kansas City ever doing something like this absolutely makes my blood boil! Rich Stadium is perfect for the Bills and has been since it opened. Prior to Rich Stadium, the Bills played at the War Memorial Stadium ("the Rockpile") where they expanded it twice until it eventually sat around 46,000 fans. They filled it and were LOUD! Great fans! Old video still exists of the Rockpile for those of you who are into nostalgia. Putting a domed stadium down in the city of Buffalo will stimulate business in the downtown area, but for God's sake, PLEASE make it seat at LEAST 70,000!

@@caseysmith544 There are LOTS of ways to add in the necessary amount of seats in order to bring it up to 70-K without jacking up the overall cost of building the facility. I just think the NHL wants Buffalo's civic leaders to build a stadium that seats less than 70,000 to keep the city of Buffalo from ever thinking about bidding for a Super Bowl.

Now whilst this video only goes over stadiums in North America, I thought I'd add some notable examples from elsewhere in the world. Now, whilst association football doesn't have a ton of retractable roof stadiums, it does have a few. First notable one I want to point out is de GelreDome in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Whilst University of Phoenix stadium was the first to have a retractable roof and field in the USA, GelreDome was, as far as I know, the very first in the world, opening all the way in 1998. Also in the Netherlands is the Johan Cruijff ArenA, which instead of a retractable field uses a hybrid grass, with the roof letting through light. Japan also has a history of big domed stadiums. From the famous huge Tokyo Dome to the insanely unique Sapporo Dome, which has a retractable football field with a baseball field under it - when the football field is wheeled out of the stadium, the baseball field appears, and then they rotate two parts of the grandstands ~135° so it's in a good spot for baseball. Look it up, Sapporo Dome transformation, it's very satisfying. However, the baseball team isn't happy that they basically play on 70s AstroTurf (to accommodate the natural grass football field), so they're building the absolutely beautiful ES CON Field Hokkaido, another dome. Another notable stadium in Japan is Toyota Stadium, which has an unique accordeon roof which, has some reliability problems. And finally for Japan, there's the Saitama Super Arena. An absolutely giant arena which can transform from a basketball/volleyball arena to a stadium so big it can even fit in an American football field, thanks to movable seating. And to close it off, two more notable ones, Principality Stadium in Wales, which is absolutely huge (bigger then the Superdome!) and opened all the way in 1999. And finally, the worlds biggest domed arena, being constructed right now, the Jakarta International Stadium. 82.000 people, in a stadium which looks gigantic.

A quick correction on the Astrodome. When the Houston Oilers opened up play in the Astrodome, they were a member of the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE. You incorrectly stated that the Astrodome was the 1st domed NFL venue. The Oilers weren't a member of the NFL until the 1970 season, after the merger between the two leagues.

The Astrodome had real grass in it the first year that it opened in 1965. The grass kept dying because it didn't get enough sunlight. After the first year, they created an artificial turf that they called Astroturf, from the baseball team's nickname.

Actually the grass that first year would have thrived if they had not had to paint the roof over the infield area. The grass was especially developed for the Astrodome. Unfortunately this added paint precluded the grass surviving. By the end of the year we were just painting green over the dead grass and dirt. Right down the road from Houston the Monsanto company developed the first Astroturf. I worked for the Astros form 65-69.

@ Ray Goldenberg-- I can remember that when the Astrodome first opened in 1965, it was called the 8th Wonder of the World. It seems like a waste that the Astros only played there for thirty five years, while they are still using Wrigley Field and Fenway Park that are over 100 years old. I was in Houston in August of 1975, and saw a couple of games at the Astrodome. It was very hot and humid at the time, and it was nice to watch a baseball in comfort.

I seem to recall reading the Texas Stadium dome wasn't finished out of fear the roof would weigh too much if finished and collapse. But we did get a entertaining quote about the open roof. "Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof, so God can watch His favorite team play" - D.D. Lewis, Cowboys linebacker, 1968-81.

The cold-weather teams in the NFL Lose a huge advantage when they switch to domes. A lot of the Viking success in the 70s had to do with them being acclimated to the cold weather

I honestly think the retractable roof stadium will be the future for most of the NFL and MLB as the games can be outside for good weather participation and/or wind, even too hot or cold but then closed for rain, snow and other things like too windy.

@@darryljorden9177 To be fair most MLB is done in mid spring to end of summer so the temps are still nice for the Twin Cities. The team also wanted to go with the outdoor trend at the time for areas that did not need a domed stadium due to heat or storms and rarely are their thunderstorms in Twin Cities during the main part of summer but more in late spring early summer is the chance high for spring storms.

@@caseysmith544 Obviously, it is the COLD that is the major issue with baseball in the Twin Cities and with MLB now consistently starting the season in March and flirting with November to end it, a retractable roof would seem to have been a no-brainer. Even Milwaukee, a bit further south of the TC, went that route. (I wonder if there are any contingencies to play at US Bank Stadium which I understand is capable of hosting baseball?)

@@darryljorden9177 Yeah I think a Retractable roof would have been the best option given the late spring early summer storms at the least in the upper Plains and Upper Western Midwest area. However, at the time the trend was to do open stadiums if the bulk of the season it made sense to do so. Milwaukee might have done this due to NFL Green Bay Packers still having a game at Milwaukee for the first 2--3 years of the stadium before Lambo field got more seating to host those bigger games in the early 2000's.

@@caseysmith544 Correction: The Packers final game in Milwaukee was in 1995, 5 years before Miller Park opened in April 2000. In fact, Miller Park cannot even mark off a full football field inside of it. Green Bay had added luxury suites to Lambeau and they would actually lose money by going to Milwaukee for the 3 games(1 preseason, 2 regular season). So,k they announced they were leaving Milwaukee at the end of 95. Milwaukee owner Bud Selig at the time was putting to together a multi-purpose stadium design together with the Packers when the Packers announced they were leaving Milwaukee. So, Bud went back to the drawing board and came up with the baseball only stadium with a retractable roof that became Miller Park. Becoming a baseball only stadium lowered the cost and made if far more possible to get government agreement to build it. But at no time was Miller Park ever designed with the Packers in mind.

Just a couple of things, and I don't really know if they are corrections, but just setting the record straight here: 1) The Tropicana dome has a teflon/fabric roof and is translucent enough to let in some natural light (perhaps not quite as much as the Silverdome did, but enough for there to be a difference on a sunny day). 2) Preferable is pronounced PREF-er-a-ble with the accent on the first syllable.

It's becoming a relative rarity for NFL teams to build new outdoor stadiums. The most recent one was Levi's Stadium in 2014. Before that, it was MetLife Stadium in 2010. Before that, you have to go all the way back to Lincoln Financial Field in 2003. That means 7 of the 10 most recent new stadiums had either a fixed or retractable roof. The new Buffalo Bill stadiums, opening in 2026, will be the first outdoor stadium in 12 years. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans are going with a fixed roof stadium.

Completely unmentioned: In the 50's the first dome almost belonged to the Brooklyn Dodgers, where the Barclays Center sits now. It was scrapped when the city commissioner got into a pissing contest with Walter O'Malley and wanted to force him to move where Shea Stadium stood in Queens. O'Malley called his bluff and left NY altogether with the NY Giants

The technology behind the design for the retractable roof that Montreal's Olympic Stadium was supposed to have for the 1976 Olympics was never really feasible. Not ONE Quebec architect or engineer was EVER consulted and THATS at least one of the reasons behind its failure. Montreal's winters are harsh compared to France, where Roger Taillebert was from. Not to.mention the secret deals, corruption, poor construction management, the failure to incorporate inflation, etc. I could go on.
