Municipal Stadium was dumped into Lake Erie, where it has become an artificial reef to promote native fish populations. One of the best fishing spots on Lake Erie and performing a great ecosystem service.

@@djtrankilo231 it helps promote fish spawning, as it helps protect young fish from predators and they can lay their eggs in the crevices and holes. I remember going to Citizens Bank Park a week after it opened in '04; you could get a good view of the wreckage of the Vet from the upper level concourse. It was kind of a sad sight; I clearly recall going there to see the Phils in '76 as an 11-year-old and was quite overwhelmed by the size of the place. It still had the centerfield fountain; I once saw Schmitty deposit a homerun there one pitch after he got a strike called that he didn't like.

@@MrDan708 For long-suffering Phillies fans, 1976 was a miraculous year that set the stage for 1980. I am not from Philly, but Mike Schmist was one of my favoritexplayers. Was happy for the city they got to celebrate in 1980, as it is a great sports town. I was not a fan of the Vet, and like CBP much better, but I think the in-town site near Chinatown would have been better. I understand the freeway access and parking in South Philly, but I like being right in town and going to Rittenhouse Square before and after. You can still do that via the Orange Line train, but just my preference. The Braves & Phil's had some real battles for a few years, when both teams were good. I root for both teams that originated in Boston, so Sox and Braves - but Northeast baseball is the best, so STL fans are great!

Cookie cutters were a byproduct of days when local governments has at least a shred of fiscal responsibility. Now, especially in the NFL with exception at the big markets like LA and NY where the financial gain is too big to worry about, cities are held hostage by owners threatening to move unless they foot the majority of the bill for a new stadium. Almost every city folds because they want to look big time and losing a team makes you appear like a backwater

The Seattle Kingdome was home to the Seahawks, Mariners and, for a few years, the Supersonics and the NASL Sounders, making it the only multipurpose stadium that housed teams of four different major-league sports. While there are no visible markers of the Kingdome, not only does Lumen Field (current home of the Seahawks and MLS Sounders) stand on the same site, but it was actually built in part with the concrete recycled from the Kingdome.
@jdhjimbo
@jdhjimbo 3 года назад
Was a horribly ugly stadium, but built very cheap. I got to see my Michigan Wolverines win the NCAA basketball title there in 1989, when I was living in Seattle. The 2 new ballparks are beautiful, but cost a small fortune - something King County voters were not willing to support in 1976/1977, when the Seahawks and Mariners started. The first baseball team - the Seattle Pilots (nka the Milwaukee Brewers) played in Sick's Stadium on Rainier Ave - a minor league park, and they moved after 1 season (1969) in Seattle.
@JamesDavidWalley
@JamesDavidWalley 3 года назад
…And, for a number of years thereafter, the site of Sick's Stadium was left a large expanse of grass where you could walk around and still see the placement of where the grandstands once stood. I wish they’d kept it as a city park, but there wasn’t the will to do so, and now there’s a Lowe's Hardware on the site. Also, a bit of history on the Kingdome's origin, which may explain a lot: The bill to build the stadium passed at the end of the '60s, but a few local stadium opponents tied it up in the courts for years, during which time the Pilots came and left. The plan finally passed judicial review in time for the NFL and MLB to offer expansion teams but, by then, the OPEC oil crisis and the resulting inflation meant that the funds that had been approved for the stadium no longer covered the initial designs, and so they had to cut back drastically. (In the end, those economy measures led to the ceiling collapse of 1994, whose repair wound up costing more than the entire construction cost of the Dome in the first place. And then, of course, it only lasted for five more years before being demolished.)
@jdhjimbo
@jdhjimbo 3 года назад
@@JamesDavidWalley I was living in the PNW when that ceiling collapsed (though in Lake Oswego, OR in 1994). It was such an ugly park (looked like trailers were hanging all around the outside of it). Even with the cutbacks, I think it came in about $15-17 million over budget, which is pocket change today. Safeco cost $1 billion, when it opened in 2000, and Century Link (or whatever corporate name du jour is on it) opened a few years after that for another $Billion. Amazing how people's lack of financial acumen can change when govts rack up $Trillions of debt. The street where Sick's Stadium met Rainier Ave, was the one I used to take to reach a parking area along Lake Washington for a power walk or jog along the lake. I used to laugh when local Seattle's used to tell me Rainier Ave was a ghetto. I was raised in Detroit, and saw p,aces that would curl your hair. Seattle had no neighborhoods like that at all, though Dopey Durkan and her Komrades on the City Council are trying to turn the Emerald City into Detroit! I loved living there, and it is a shame what Marxist morons have done to both Seattle & Portland.

They had a plan to change that but it would have cost a lot of money The huge floods that hit Houston in 2016 and 2017 changed all that People wanted that money to be spent on flood control. Flooding is something people in Houston have to deal with but the streets turning into waterways is very different than that water getting into people's cars, homes and places of business. They nearly hosted Superbowl 41 but they didn't have the minimum number of seats available an to do that it would have cost the city 3.5 million bucks to install the minimum amount of seats which would not have been worth it of an outdated stadium so instead they just waited till their new stadium was built. While they kept the shape of the outfield fence, the Memorial Stadium baseball field is scaled down to little league dimensions. Regarding The Astrodome, it does function very well for Hollywood. When THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES was turned into a big budget film starring Emma Stone as Billie Jean King, the Stadium was more or less preserved to perfection. The real match took place within that structure. So to have it still standing 40 years later, the production crew could essentially set up lights and film equipment anywhere they wanted. Just dress up the walls and hallways with retro 70's furniture and fixtures. BOOM! Welcome back in time. Same with the old Texas Stadium being utilized for a few scenes in the Mark Wahlberg film INVINCIBLE. They digitally recreated Veterans Stadium and used Franklin Field for the close ups and on field sequences. At least the structures are forever preserved on film...😎🇵🇷🇺🇸📽🗽🦂

In Pittsburgh we have had two multi purpose venues. Three Rivers Stadium Gate D 20' high entrance gate concrete post is still standing as well as home plate location marker and the point of the immaculate reception . Also in the Oakland part of Pittsburgh, Forbes Field's original left & center field brick outfield wall still stands. The place for the first walk off Home Run in the 1960 World Series. Home plate from the last game is on the floor in its original location. Inside a building of the university of Pittsburgh. Also the third base line is also marked in brick. Those bricks were from the structure. For es Field was used by the Pirates its whole life 1909-1970 The Steelers played at Forbes field from 1933-1963. The Pitt Panthers football also played at Forbes Field 1909-1924. So Forbes was multi use 44 years. Three Rivers was multi use its whole life 1970 - 2000.

I wouldn't call Mile High Stadium a cookie-cutter. It was built in 1948 as a baseball-only facility. When the Broncos moved in, there was an addition of bleachers to increase capacity, then again after the AFL-NFL merger to increase seating to over 50,000. Later renovations would further increase the capacity to over 70,000.
