One name that came to my mind (I’m a fraghead) is Demi Rawlings. The perfume reviewer. When she came out with her perfumes, OMG the prices!!!! 😨😨😨😨 I haven’t even sampled one yet because they are over 600 USD a piece but people say they are good quality. Another YTber Soki London is in the process of coming out with her own perfumes doing collab with a perfume company, after years of reviewing fragrances. This concept is good when done ethically but yes the prices need to be accessible. Thanks for another lovely video.

Like that. Understand Tiffany's thought process on merch agree. Her thrift store thing is unsustainable. More needs to be a manufacturing level shift. People still want to work. We just need more sustainable ways to produce and pay truly livable wages both honoring human rights. Thanks for sharing that idea. Nice for the fan to bring an article themselves to a creator at a craft show or art something. That is a good local idea.

I’d love to see you talk about the sustainability (or lack of) in the wedding industry! There’s a lot of similar issues with wedding “merch” (customized bridesmaid shirts, wedding guests gifts, individualized trinkets with “bride” and “groom” on them) and as someone who works in it, it’s honestly disheartening to see the amount of wastefulness that weddings can bring. I think it’d be an interesting deep dive for you! Love your videos as always!

I find it exhausting to watch youtubers say 'their merch is something they REALLY care about and worked SO hard on' when it is clearly disingenuous. That hasn't happened with the youtubers I love most but man, it's like re-living that era where they all were 'sooo passionate' about releasing a book :/ I like to assume it's more management than the creators, but..
@oblivionarts4
@oblivionarts4 2 года назад
I agree with you! It's obvious when someone is genuinely passionate about something they made/came up with and someone who uses merch as an easy cash grab. As someone who went to college for graphic design and currently designs merchandise to sell I can't help but scratch my head sometimes seeing the merch that large influencers sell. Yes designs can work by being simple (I thought that the dream merch was a good example of this), but at least some thought and effort needs to be put in for it to work. It doesn't seem like there's any thought behind some influencer merch, and like you said it doesn't feel genuine.

Yes, to wish lists! I always have a list of things I want and people act like I'm selfish. I'm just sick of having a bunch of stuff I don't want taking up space in my home. Also, I would much rather get people exactly what they want rather than stress about every single gift I'm buying and whether it's appropriate for them or not. I've tried to get my family to just stop giving gifts and just do gift giving for the kids, but no one wants to do that.
@tiffanyferg
@tiffanyferg 2 года назад

@Author.Noelle.Alexandria
@Author.Noelle.Alexandria 2 года назад
The beef against wish lists is that they are often full of things more expensive than the person would be willing to buy for themselves. Don't give me a wish-list with $300-sneakers from Foot Locker if you'd take $300 cash, buy yourself $50-sneakers, then blow the rest on something else. Funny thing is, something similar happened. I gave a gift card to a store to cover something an old friend wanted, and she went off and used it for a lower-priced version. She'd have taken that Kitchenaid if I'd bought it directly, but in the end, it was clear she was fine with a different version for significantly less. That showed she didn't really care about getting that particular item, but would have been fine with someone else spending more money for an item she didn't really care for. I now give gift cards that someone can use toward a pricier item if they want, but no longer bother buying pricy shit off of gift lists, or even cheap shit. I've been just as amazed how often people think twice when they're the ones buying it themselves even with a gift card.

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria Yeah, you're right. I probably have things on my list that are more expensive than people are willing to pay. I don't even look at the price when I add it. But when other people tell me what they want, I'll get them a gift card, like you, if it's too expensive. I still think wish lists are good to at least get an idea of what the person wants.

@@queenwednesdayart If your mom gives you and your sister each $50, and you and your sister each give your mom $50, and each other $50, you've all given and received $100. It's basically an exchange of $50-bills. It ends up being a wash. I favor either gift cards (when you get cash, it can be easy to feel it should be saved for bills, while a gift card is basically mental permission to spend money at a store you like), or ignoring obligatory events. I prefer to give gifts when I randomly come by something I think someone would like rather than trying to find something I think they might like enough just because of a calendar date, and that's how I prefer gifts as well. Give me something if you see something random you think I'd love and really want rather than looking for something you hope I'll like enough to keep around the house for a while. Obligatory gift events result in a lot of pointless spending we we wouldn't do otherwise and a lot of getting of stuff we don't really want. Isn't it better for spending to be done because we see something and are reminded of someone because they might like it, and to get gifts because the person saw something and thought of us? I'll personally drop a small fortune if I see something randomly I think someone would love, but hesitate to spend much when I'm jus trying to find something to check a name off a holiday list, and my favorite gifts are the little things given to me out of the blue.

Expanding on your idea of sustainable merch, you could make a collab with, for example, ThredUP where there's a "add design" button, so the person would choose whatever item of clothing they want, and be able to add the design for an extra fee. That way, the item becomes truly unique, fits the person's style and size, and doesn't require making things in advance or looking for similar items.

A guy who lives in my building is a well known musician and has a business that doesn't directly relate to his music career but is "on brand". He made a merch drop for his business where people could send in a t-shirt/tote bag/whatever they wanted to be screen printed. He encouraged people to use something they already owned or buy it second hand. The result is a lot of one-of-a-kind merch that people know will fit them and they'll use which I think is the best way possible (but of course a bit labor intensive) to make merch.

An idea to the giftgiving and secret santa-ing: my friends and I started a tradition where we get a name and then we have to write a poem about that person for that person. It’s really fun and makes you feel more connected to that person because you actively think about them and what they do and like for the poem and as a receiver you’re baffled with what someone can come up with for you. You don’t have to spend money, there’s no waste, you have a poem on a piece of paper to keep and everybody is happy. I wear a lot of graphic tees and there are so many youtubers making merch I want to wear, but almost none of it comes in the combination of size and style I want! I'm a very large person and I don't like the way boxy unisex shirts fit me, my ideal fit is a "women's curvy" 4x shirt, but almost no youtubers make shirts in that fit and size. The only on-demand site I've found that even carries that style is teespring and I LOVE what I've gotten from there. I loved Fundie Fridays' merch so much that I bought it even though it wasn't the right style, and like you said, I almost never wear it, but I'd wear it all the time if it was the right cut. When a content creator offers stuff they themselves won't wear, it shows that it's a cash grab, and that's not cool. Don't try to sell me what you won't wear for yourself. Unfortunately, that's what Jen does, and I won't support that. This is sad since I was an original subscriber from back when she was at UNDER 500 subscribers. She had a passion for it then. :( Like a lot of creators, she seems to be bored now that it's a full-time job (and what you do full time can get tedious, yes but it's detectable). Mr. Atheist is the worst example though. I was watching him back under 1k subs, and now can't stand who he is in any way at all. He has openly guilted people int giving him money and has had hissy fits when his projects don't get funded, like when he required donations to a new project...as the cost to find out what that project it. Yeah, imagine having to pay to find out what you're paying for. The last straw was when he pushed people to buy socks since that was a merch item you could buy and wear without having to advertise for him, and so there was no excuse to not buy socks. I'd like to see Tiffany cover--to the best of her inherently and unavoidably biased ability on this one--how content creators' content tends to change when they go full-time. Sometimes it stays the same (Stephanie Harlow was already an at-home mom, and I was watching back when she was a makeup channel!!, and nothing has changed with her other than a dedicated studio space and sometimes seeming nervous about trying new things), and sometimes it goes from passion project to a job that results in someone feeling they're an indisputable expert (JenLuvsReviews is very guilty of this--I was a watcher when she was still a full-time teacher), and sometimes a passion project becomes someone clearly just not wanting to do it because it's a job and jobs can drag on you (James started doing entire videos when Jen admitted just not being in the mood to do videos, which is literally her job now).

My thoughts are that maybe they should use recycled materials for the clothing and other products. It's not as popular yet, but there are companies that do use recycled materials in clothing. One of the biggest problems in recycling is that not enough of the new goods are made from the recycled material. Higher demand will likely lead to better recycling programs.
@kate.cousteils

I agree 100%. Mixed fibres (e.g., a half cotton half polyester t-shirt) also complicates recycling, so maybe they can do something with the more common blends.

i used to work at a t shirt screen printing shop and just wanted to say that the method of printing matters environmentally! most cheap shirts are printed with plastisol ink which is made of PVC-it's bad both in the production phase and from a reuse standpoint, since you're literally printing a shirt with plastic meaning it can't be recycled into rags, it cracks making it unwearable after a while, and in general just doesn't feel very nice. water-based inks are generally a bit more expensive to get printed but a much better option at every step. there are also discharge inks (used for printing light ink on dark clothing) which are nasty to use during production tbh but make the actual garment higher quality, and don't add plastic to the fabric. also idk if this is standard industry policy but my shop as a rule would not print on reused garments simply because it took way too long to sort through them, they might not always be clean, and there tend to be a lot of inconsistencies in fabrics between brands so what works for one shirt might not work for the next. it works great for small scale home operations though!

The free/gifted items issue is real. I have so much stuff I don't really want or need, but they were gifts and I feel guilty about getting rid of them... When I worked in retail, we would sometimes put baskets at the front of the store with free stuff that just wouldn't sell. Of course it was better than throwing it away, but there was a reason the stuff didn't sell in the first place. It was ugly, crappy and/or useless. But when it was free, people swarmed to it like it was gold. I bet you those people who took a bunch of free crap with them never used it and ended up throwing it away anyway. Companies should do better research into what consumers want because it's insane how many products are so unpopular that stores are forced to either destroy them, give them away for free or donate them (with the latter two options meaning the stuff ends up in the landfill anyway because nobody actually wants it!!) Also, love that Cristine sent you pr. I was already eyeing your nail polish hahaha.

I'm in the writing world, and the rate of ghost writers is so high that odds are almost 100%. (Before someone says "But X wrote their own": ALMOST 100% doesn't mean ALL...words mean things.) Sad insider secret: A writer is more likely to make money ghost-writing than writing a book to put their own name on, and it takes enough time to write a half-way decent book that paying someone $500 for a quick manuscript is cheaper by far than doing it yourself, and influencers are definitely known to do this a lot. XO McCenna had one of the most thoughtful, personal merch launches that I’m aware of. (I have no idea if she got this idea from you or not.) She and her long time boyfriend over a period of time bought second hand sweatshirts from thrift stores, all different colors and sizes. Once they acquired a bit over 100 pieces, he washed all of them, then she created a very subtle design (simply the words “All the Things” which they embroidered on all the shirts themselves using an embroidery machine. She also had a postcard printed with one of her favorite pieces of her Mother’s art to write personalized notes to all of the buyers. It was obviously a very small launch as their inventory was limited to what they had purchased and as I recall, the price wasn’t outrageous either, you just had to be quick to get one because once she announced that it had gone live, it sold out within 20 minutes. All in all, it just seemed like a very personalized and sustainable way to do merch. And it was very on brand for both of them as they both are very big into thrifting.

i’ve noticed merch has turned into a niche-like concept where it was better to have merch with more specific quotes/phrases so that people can build more of a community; but it’s turned to more general/vague things that you can see on places like urban outfitters that reminds their audience of them like jewelry, “aesthetic” designs

i’ve only bought one piece of merch, i had just gotten my first job and finally found a youtuber i could watch every single video without any question, jarvis johnson. so when he dropped a champion “trying my best” collab in his early day i was absolutely all over that. honestly it was totally worth the 40$ it’s subtle merch, it’s amazing quality and honestly so freaking comfortable

i have only bought youtube merch from two people (the kurtis conner line you mentioned, and jarvis johnson's new sweatshirt) because i liked the designs as standalone items, i knew i would wear them, and i watch those creators often and wanted to support them! after having been part of the makeup-collection-mayhem of 2016-ish, i've learned how important it is to be selective of what i purchase and to not just buy things because they're new and i don't have them, but to only purchase what i know i will utilize and enjoy!

My family does wishlists! We always ask each other what we need/want! It’s so nice when you’re the gift-giver because you KNOW the person is going to use/like the gift. And, instead of a bunch of random stuff showing up at Christmas time, I was gifted things I really need- cutting boards, and my own set of matching pots and pans- items I use quite literally every day.

I want RU-vidr merch but I get nervous that I'll end up not liking the person anymore. I'm the same way with wanting merch that doesn't look like merch.

Love your merch ideas--however I used to work in a screen printing shop and MOST of the profit is made on the blanks, so most shops will not take items not purchased through them, because then the job isn't profitable. I definitely agree that RU-vid merch can be made more sustainably, lots of even the most basic blanks brands sell recycled lines now! We as customers/fans need to use our buying power wisely.

Are you familiar with how the DFTBA store works? I thought it would be an interesting piece of the RU-vidr merch landscape as so many smaller creators use it and it seems like good quality, but I'm unclear on if they focus on production AND distribution or if it's just distribution. Maybe it's more similar than I assumed to other merch services, but I assumed they were more involved in design and production. Also most of the profit the company itself makes goes to charity.

I’ve only ever had a positive experience buying merch from DFTBA (I have a mug I got from them years ago that has held up through 1000s of washes). I also have an enamel pin from Jessica Kellgren Fozard’s DFTBA store that is super high quality. I think it’s super cool that they seems to support both big and small creators.

I only support one RU-vidr since she donates her earnings from RU-vid memberships to charity and has her own nail polish brand. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, you’re probably under a rock. It’s Cristine lol I own almost all the polishes ahhh But I wish I could afford most of the clothing merch I’ve liked lol I get secondhand/overstock clothing more often but sometimes splurge on expensive/higher quality pieces if I wear them everyday. Even at some concerts, I bought t-shirts and hoodies and I use all of them/wear them in public.

Your brainstorm at the end about a sustainable merch drop is pretty much what XO Macenna did for her first (and so far only) merch drop! Her partner has a business sourcing and selling vintage clothing, so he sourced a bunch of high quality sweatshirts from thrift stores in a variety of sizes and colors. Macenna then created a design to be embroidered onto each of the sweatshirts, and they embroidered them themselves (using a machine, not by hand). Because of the nature of the project, there was of course limited supply, but I thought it was really lovely that she found a way to make thoughtful, sustainable merch that she touched and quality controlled herself.

it wasn't mentioned but, i think my least favourite type of "content creator merch" is when they make funko pop-like figures or plushes of themselves. they make me so angry. like talk about instant landfill fodder
@Jeeplite
@Jeeplite 2 года назад
tbh I think collectables have a lot less of an environmental impact than clothes. Not that merch of any kind is whats really the issue, but figurines/plushes have a much higher chance of being resold/given to someone else vs being thrown away like clothes
@fractalsudoku
@fractalsudoku 2 года назад
@@Jeeplite it's just the complete uselessness of the product for me imo. just using up tons of plastic/fabric for something that's entirely pointless and that nobody wants. I know that clothes also end up like that a lot of the time but at least those pretend to have an actual use, yknow?
@Jeeplite
@Jeeplite 2 года назад
@@fractalsudoku I think collectables have a use! Just like merch clothes (which are not necessary for life), they make people happy and feel good. I'm a collecter myself but I have lots of non collecter friends that still cherish action figures, toys, and plushies from when they were young. When I am no longer getting as much joy from a plush, younger relatives are always really excited to get them in a way they're less excited for hand me down clothes. That's only my own experience, but I definitely think toys have just as much purpose as clothes.

I really appreciate your take on sustainability and your merch drop, and I feel bad for saying this, but sourcing through a thrift shop takes away affordable clothing from people who need it. There were periods of my life where I couldn't buy new clothing and relief on thrift stores, and often couldn't find what I needed bcs, as a plus sized person, often the best items were taken by other people to "upcycle" them for fun.

I bought an Ana Luisa jewelry collab with one of my favorite youtubers last year, and I really love it. I feel like this sort of merch thats super lowkey but still from your fave 1. Is a way to support their creative endeavors and 2. Is a piece thats actually wearable without being 'too much'. Also, although it was pricey it felt worth it as it was a piece from an established brand. So even if I stop watching the youtuber, I still have this beautiful necklace. I hope this made sense lol, also amazing video as always Tiffany!

I’ve never been into merch, but I’m all about RU-vidr brands. I’m wearing KL Polish and Holo Taco on my nails right now. Actually I just realized I’m wearing a shirt from Womn, a sustainable clothing brand by Weylie and Sophia Chang and it was my favorite brand (RIP). But I’m not really one to just wear a random tshirt day to day so it feels like a waste of money and unsustainable environmentally. I’d rather buy something that I’ll use on the daily and will become part of my life enough that I forget it was a RU-vidrs, like this shirt.

Hi Tiffany, great video ❤️ I just wanted to share how my friends and I do Secret Santa to be sure we just get each other things we need/we’re definitely going to use: we list our names on a website, then each one of us “draws” a name and makes a small list of things they’d like to get and that are in the price range we established. Therefore, when someone draws my name, they also access my list and get me something from there. For example, I really needed a study planner/agenda and a pencil case, I put those items in my list and my friend got me the planner that I now use on daily basis ✨

my favorite local cafe/restaurant started doing merch that's kinda what you mention - it's their new logo, locally screen-printed in white across thrifted shirts and it was really cool - none of the shirts look the same (all the shirts are old printed tees of different designs) and it's a great draw that they're merch but unique.
