You don’t need me to pump you up, but what makes you a great teacher is the way you take your time and actually love the moment. Every discovery feels genuinely exciting even though you’ve been doing this for so long. There’s no race to heroics. Just encouragement. You’re made to teach, brother!

Keep at it brother, your mild yet positive manner of teaching is off the chain. I have a room full of quality instruments and can't play any of them. I spent 27 years of my life on the road delivering goods for the survival of people on this great planet. No one knew I existed or cared. My point is I am now 62 and I want so bad to play an instrument, I am by no means a natural, my old fingers are short and stiff, but I refuse the except the fact that I am old that it is too late to learn. I am the guy that tears up when I hear a great piece being performed regardless of the instrument. I feel it in my heart and soul. It is so frustrating though knowing so many can play, and I just can't seem to get it. I own 2 fender Tele's a hand wired custom shop Fender Deluxe amp and a 500-watt fender Rumble also a 40-watt rumble. An upright bass a sax a fender p-bass and a Gretch G2220 short scale along with a Yamaha acoustic and an Epiphone ES-339 ALONG WITH A SET OF PEARL DRUMS. I set and look at all this wonderful gear and think I would give up everything I have except my wife just to be able to make music with one of them. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR ATTEMPTING TO PUT TOGETHER A METHOD OF TEACHING SOMEONE CAN FOLLOW. I may never get there but I will continue to make an effort, I just feel like if I could find someone like you to sit with a couple of times a week maybe I could learn. STAY WELL.

Dude, your lessons are so good. I'm an absolute bass beginner. I've been practicing from your lessons for almost two weeks. You have a pace or even rhythm to your teaching style that is approachable and hopeful. I can tell that while you are teaching the A-B-C's you are setting us up for lessons about grammar, as it were. Currently, my practice consists of running through your exercises several times, and then noodling around with notes I've learned that resonated with me, and playing with their combinations and rhythm's. I was blessed to have good music education in the public schools I attended. I've learned the basics for cello, piano, trumpet, and tuba. My ability to read music is extremely atrophied, but it's still there. But bass is entirely new to me, as is the experience I have of playing it. All the instruments I've played in the past required so much discipline. Practicing was a chore. Boring. But with bass, well, I just love the sound and the vibe of the instrument. Running through exercises is a joy, because I'm just focusing on getting the right sound from the instrument. And when I get that note just right it feels good.

Wanted to thank you not only for WHAT you teach, but more importantly, for HOW you teach - serene, thoughtful, thorough, and patient approach to the bass guitar. In a world that seems to increasingly favor and promote those who are loud and frenetic, you are, to me, a true breath of fresh air and I applaud you! By the way, you may remember/know my nephew who used to reside and teach in Toronto - jazz saxophonist, Ryan Oliver! Keep up the EXCELLENT instruction!

There are lots of bass teachers on RU-vid and they are all great, but you make learning a relaxing experience. I do enjoy your lessons and the manner in which your present them. I should have taken up bass years ago, but I was mainly a singer that plays rhythm guitar. Learning the bass is great. I am already jamming with some dudes and having fun doing cover songs. Now, I have to learn to how to play bass and sing. That is a new challenge for me being accustomed to playing guitar. Learning lyrics is always a challenge too. Singing is easy.

⅝/24: Hi Rich, I’m 79 and learning for the second time after maybe 30 years. I learned a set by chicken picken and memory for our little band-on a right handed bass though I’m a leftie. It’s harder this time but I got a leftie bass. I’m just mirroring your left hand fingering, and I’m more comfortable using a heavy duty pick. It’s just now starting to feel natural playing left-handed. Thanks for your gentle way of teaching! I mean to get good by any means necessary, but you’re doing great.

@@richbrownbassThe scales…etc are all great and needful to understand at least some music theory…but it does one very little unless they know how to use them in a song. It would be great to see a video of some songs actually using these scales. I have been playing 5 years only knowing the major scale. Everything I play is in a three fret box of notes. Usually the 1, 3, 5, flatted 7 and at times the 2 or 6 or octave. All within any 3 frets on the neck. What am I missing?

Hi Mr. Brown- When you want to play fast, do you use index and middle finger? When you are playing slow, do you just use one finger ? This is where I struggle.
@richbrownbass

Yes to both. I have to use both fingers when playing fast. I've gotten into the habit of using my second finger when playing slower lines, especially walking basslines.
