ESSENTIAL CORRECTION: After Karras jumps and is read his last rites, he does respond. His hand opens and closes a few times over the priest's hand. It's a gesture of acceptance going back hundreds of years--not everybody can speak when they're at death's door. I'm not religious but it's a beautiful moment. Karras struggles with faith the entire movie, the hand squeezing is an essential detail.

On the "the power of christ compells you" scene...sure, it could be a little silly how many times they repeat it, but honestly I think it's brilliant. Reagan floating off the bed is the movie's most supernatural moment yet, it's the peak of the scene's intensity, and instead of the tension snapping with either a big scare or some other flashy moment, it just holds on the two priests screaming in desperation for God to come to their aid, and then sloooowly dissipating as maybe it actually starts to work. And then Von Sydow caps it off perfectly when they get her down to the bed, quietly spitting out, "it is GOD that commands you".

It’s funny how The Exorcist franchise only has two good movies and it’s the two that had the involvement of William Blatty. How and why we’ve been “gifted” two legacy prequels and two legacy sequels is a constant mystery to me, especially since only one of them dares to rise above being middling. For as cursed as this production was and as many questionable or awful things happened because of people not caring about safety or health, the one thing I appreciate is that Father Karras visits the house with the intent to be a psychiatrist first. No joke, there's such a stereotype that exorcists just show up on command whenever someone starts behaving differently and "exorcise the demon" regardless of whatever's happening. There's a huge amount of disproving the standard stuff like psychological or psychiatric issues, various types of abuse, drug use, undisclosed connections or influences, etc. Exorcism is literally reserved for when nothing else could possibly be used to explain whatever's happening, and it's the one thing I'll actually give various churches as a point of praise without complicating matters. Granted, not every sect does the same level of scrutiny, but for those who do, it's nice to see that they're not being totally zealous with calling everything demonic possession.
@sparki9085
@sparki9085 Месяц назад
From what ive seen, even in more scrupulous churches, it seems to come down to "we dont know what it is, so it must be demons" which can very easily cause people to not get the help they need. Id much rather they actually prove demons exist TBH.

William Peter Blatty made a novel/film called The Ninth Configuration about the character at 09:35. It's brilliant. He's an astronaut & as she pees on the rug she says "you're going to die up there." He went crazy upon launch and ended up in a mental hospital. The Ninth Configuration is about him there, played by Walking Dead/The Rise of Leslie Vernon's Scott Wilson. He's amazing in it. I think one thing is that it's been parodied and referenced so often that it's hard to remember what it would have been like to watch this when it first came out, when the popular image of exorcism was far, far less widespread, so the final confrontation between the priests and the demon would have been far more unsettling and alien. It also ties into the culture of the time--fear about the decline of tradition and the youth becoming stranger and more incomprehensible.

What makes the movie so good is that it's just as heartbreaking as it is scary, if not more so. Seeing Chris MacNiel go through what she does is genuinely sad to watch. It's so easy to connect with her struggles, and it makes the horror super effective. Damien is also a character that kind of makes you sad to watch. His mom has died and he's losing his faith. It's really engaging following his story and seeing him face the unbelievable head on. It's a perfect movie imo.

Number one he was actually a protective deity of his worshipers and also a protector of pregnant women and newborn children and was also called apon to scare off other demons and evil spirits. Number two he was not just a "demon" he was also a primordial deity of the wind (especially the southern wind) who ruled over other wind spirits. he was also seen as a bringer of plague due to his control over wind and associations with underworld. And now I’m about to come as close to watching the movie as I ever will with this kill count, so now I won’t have to remain clueless as to what this movie is even about and why it’s so popular.
