*Great reaction! This movie was disturbing down to the soul when it came out 50 years ago. Also remember, today there's 1000's of movies about the paranormal, the devil, demons, hauntings, possessions, etc etc.. When this came out, there had never been a movie, a TV show, or even much of a conversation about any of this. It had never been done before. Then you get all of this, all at once and it had ppl throwing up, passing out, and running to churches as fast as their legs could carry them. Then you find out it's based on a true story about a young boy and, dayum.. it actually can get worse* 😟😦😱

The small white pills Father Merin took was and still is nitroglycerin tablets which are placed under the tongue when having angina (chest) pains. The pill or spray which is what is used more these days quickly open up your arteries to help prevent a stroke or heart attack. You can only have so many sprays or tablets but if it persists they can give you a patch on your arm or intravenously. I know because I've had heart issues most of my life and have had all versions mentioned over time.

I have seen this movie MANY times and watched MANY reactions, and I learned something new yesterday. During the crucifix scene, Regan says, "Do you know what your cunting daughter did?" WELL...I had never ever noticed, but that line is said in Burke's voice, the dead director. I never understood that line, and it is the same line in the novel as well. Cunting is a colloquial term in some countries and is equivalent to "fucking". The demon as Burke is taunting the mother by insinuating, "Did you know your daughter killed me and pushed me out the window?" The mother knew this is what happened but would never admit it to the detective or anyone else.

Great Reaction man! The really frightening part of this movie, that you may or may not know, it is based on a true story, except it was a young boy not a girl. I was 17 years old in 1973 and me and a couple of buddies were out one night visiting some local bars, near the end of the night we decided to take in a midnight showing of The Exorcist. It had just been released, and we didn't know anything about it, and we were a bit drunk and high. Well, let me tell you, that movie had an effect on me like nothing I've ever experienced in my life! Being 17, I still lived with my parents, and it was probably two weeks or more that I was sleeping with my bedroom door open. Also, I was having the hardest time just falling asleep at night, for quite a while. This was 1973, and there was nothing even close to a movie like this, NOTHING! I remember seeing in the newspapers and on TV news that people were running out of theaters, some screaming and crying in horror, all across the country. (US)

I've been terrified by this movie since I was a little kid. I've since watched it loads of times and seen lots of reviews and reaction videos but you were the first one to notice something I've never seen anyone else mention - that the temperature in Regan's room is lower than it is _outside_ on the street! Great pick-up. Of course the theory is that cold is associated with ghosts/demons/hell etc. You're right about the demon pretending to be burned by the 'holy' water too. The demon (Pazuzu) wanted to plant doubts in Karras' mind as to its authenticity, just to mess with him. BTW the voice of the demon is that of actress Mercedes McCambridge, who did astonishing, and largely underappreciated, work on this film.

My parents knew I liked horror, so I wasn't expressly forbidden from watching it, but I was definitely warned. And I was curious because I knew it was an older movie. "How bad can it be?" I thought. Subscribed The Exorcist is so much more than just a horror film. It is not only a horror film but rather a film that depicted horrific events. It is uneasy suspense with a buildup that emotionally explodes. Its great story telling with incredible raw performances by all. It's horror/drama that is serious, relentless, and powerful. It's about doubt, faith, guilt, sacrifice, desperation, love, redemption, heartbreaking loss and science versus the human condition. A mother who has no religious beliefs, desperately seeks help from a guilt ridden priest who has lost his faith. The movie won the Oscar for best screenplay for good reasons.

This was her most famous movie, but Linda Blair was also great in a TV movie called "Sweet Hostage", which came out right after this. Martin Sheen plays an escaped mental patient who kidnaps her. Great acting by both. I read that Linda admitted to falling in love with Martin while they were filming this. But he was way older and married. When you read the comments, you can see that a lot of women who watched this fell in love with him. Even though he plays a kidnapper.

Linda Blair hasn't been active in acting for quite sometime, she founded and runs a highly successful animal rescue and placement foundation. Her passion is truly animals. I believe she had a childhood desire to become a veterinarian, but then went into modeling and tv commercials and eventually led up to auditioning for "Regan" just when the director was losing hope on finding a perfect fit in casting the part. Ms. Blair has indeed blessed us once more on the big screen with a cameo appearance in the new continuation sequel. Hopefully, it means that she will be returning and having a significant amount of screen time in the next two planned sequels.
@johnboy32064
@johnboy32064 Год назад
It doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll be in the next two sequels. And given the fact that the new film has been universally panned by both critics and audiences, why would Blair or Burstyn want to appear again?
@e.s.9080
@e.s.9080 Год назад
@@johnboy32064For the money. Burstyn only reprised her role in this latest one only because she found a cause to donate her salary to and I'm sure Blair would likely agree to be in the next one or two, to have hers used for her animal rescue foundation.

You watched the original 1973 cut, which is better than the extended director's cut that came out in 1998 (with about 10-12 minutes of restored scenes and some new visual effects). So the back story is Linda Blair was up for Academy Award? I think she was around fourteen, but another actress younger than her name. Tatum O'Neill beat her out. She was the youngest. I believe the youngest actress to win an Academy Award. Also, the voice was by an actress named Mercedes. McCain bridge! Excuse the spelling that I'm talking through a microphone, and I'm not going to fix it. Also, it was some computer rice stuff in there. Along with Linda Blair's voice. Father Karras wasn't committing suicide, he was saving Regan's life. You wouldn't say a fireman who runs into a burning house is committing suicide. He's sacrificing his life to save lives. BTW, a friend of mine who attended St. Louis University High School in 1972 had Fr. Walter Halloran pointed out to him by another priest. "That's the guy who had his nose broken by the devil." Father Halloran was the real life younger priest who assisted in the 1949 exorcism in St. Louis that the book and movie are based on. My friend didn't understand what the priest was talking about because before the movie, almost no one, including Catholics, had ever heard of an exorcism. Fr. Halloran did say in an interview that he had his nose broken by the possessed boy and he did work at SLUH in 1972.

It was not the devil that possessed Reagan it was a demon by the name Pazuzu. This is the same Demon that Father Marin cast out of an African boy and that took a month to perform which almost killed Marin. The Demon knew that Marin was the so-called expert on exorcisms and would be called to perform it again on Reagan. That’s why when Father Marin arrives at the house Pazuzu screams out Marin loudly to let him know that Pazuzu knows he has arrived. The unedited version is a lot better than this version and had elements that were edited out due to how graphic and disturbing they were, like Reagan running down the steps like a crab but bent over backwards. Epic and absolutely a masterpiece still by todays standards.

GREG: I was 20 in 1973 when I saw The Exorcist in a terrific, darkened movie theater in Hollywood with excellent projection & sound. There are several things about The Exorcist young reactors cannot understand because you weren't there in 1973. Back then there were no stints for heart patients. Instead, doctors gave their patients what we 1973 audiences could recognize as tiny Nitro Glycerin tablets in tiny metal containers convenient to carry on their person at all times to put under their tongues, as Father Merrin did in the first & last scenes when they were having chest pains to open up the blood flow to and from the heart to stop an impending heart attack. It was the movie's way of telling us 1973 audiences that Father Merrin had a serious heart problem (not Parkinson's as you wrongly guessed) that the demon would later exploit to cause him to have a fatal heart attack. This was the first real movie about demonic possession. Most of us went into the movie knowing nothing about demonic possession, much less, believing in the possibility of it being real. We only knew the movie was based on a true story, unlike the terrible sequels. We 1973 audiences were NOT desensitized to the graphic violence, depraved sexual rants, profanity, and vile special effects in The Exorcist. This was the first and last horror movie with top-notch actors accurately portraying how real people in real life would really react to the horrifying events in the movie, which made it all seem more real (believable). The only way to see it in 1973, before the Internet, was in a darkened movie theater with an audience so scared you could feel it with a few people running down the aisles during the movie because they couldn't handle how scared it made them. Combined, all of the above made The Exorcist TEN times scarier & a better movie for us 1973 audiences than any other horror movie made before or after. The Exorcist III with George C. Scott was the best sequel. For all the reasons above, it doesn't come close to how terrifying The Exorcist was for us who saw it in 1973.

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit. 5. Father Merrin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually broke her coccyx when the demon makes her hard fall. 7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 8. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 9 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith. 10. RIP Willian Freidkin😇

That wasn't a song at the start of movie. That was the Adhan. The Adhan is the Muslim call/reminder for prayer which is performed/recited in all mosques around the world, 5 times a day...

The exorcist 2 sucks, but you should check out the exorcist 3, it’s a completely different type of movie and it is really good. Some people like it better than the first exorcist. Myself, i like them equally, they’re just very different.

~~ Rosemary's Baby was about as hardcore as there'd been&when this came out the # people that lost their minds. Fainting, vomiting etc. Seen those in the younger who've said this ain't shit because their so damn desensitized. That&agree it isn't shit if you simply watch on your phone or lil' laptop screen. Willing to bet I could get a different reaction, though, when the only way to truly experience it for what it is is w/at least 32" TV or bigger? And more importantly w/least 5.1 or 7.1 true surround sound. I was bout 10 when I first saw it followed by # views over the years. But when I introduced my brother to it after getting my Infinity surround set up. Swear, it was almost like I was seeing it for the first time as well. Getting chills w/my brother in parts I never did before.

There is no effect of changing houses because demon gets inside a person not inside the house specifically. Initially it remains first in house then get into head and body lastly. It's great movie for superb story line and character build up. No music unnecessary to hipe up the matter. It's pure raw natural visuals . PAZAZU is the demon which cannot be destructed but can only be transferred. It's demon which hunts pure soul, problematic or disturbed minds and attack those who act as host to support demon to help fight against God child. Pazzazu before coming gives numerous sign to person whom it will attack later. After that it will create a host [ in this case Regan] to build up to call priest so that it attacks both. Pazazu had numerous encounters with old father in past but somehow father had successfully cast out the evil. This is final where father himself know he is going to die after experiencing the signs from demon at Northern Iraq. Just for information when father got the sign of danger in Iraq, already Regan was posssed as she started playing with ouja board way before father got the sign. This is not such a scary movie like other nowadays jumpscare movies but horror ofcouse with fantastic storyline and characters build up. Superb sound design and directing with great acting . All good in this movie. Movie can be used as example to others who are learning the art of cinema . This movie is avoided by many in past as parents told their child not to watch it strictly .it's was a curse movie at that Era. There is something gonna happen to many who have seen the movie in theatre and at home later. There are many things to tell you as I have research it for about 1 year about the movie, making and the book as well. So There are some interesting facts about the demon. It will tell that later as it becomes too lengthy. 😊

Whatever you're watching, its not The Exorcist. It was never so blue! Finale looks like its lit with neon. The director would turn over in his grave if he saw this. This is the 2nd vid I've seen of people watching this and I noticed the same problem. I assume they changed how the movie was supposed to look to make it less scary or disturbing for streaming people. Shameful. Guess I'd better get the bluray just to have an accurate and correct version of this classic.

@@TheRealMovieManGreg Thats what I thought at first. But now I've looked at 3 new ones and the scenes all have that different look. It seems to have lost the more realistic docu feel that it always had. Since posting here, I've come across a couple articles noting the alterations. Haven't read in detail. Still, nothing to do with HD...it apparently has been changed. Now some scenes almost look like they were shot by James Cameron! Thats the benefit of physical media...the original is preserved, thankfully.

So let me inform you of all the things you might gonna get wrong. Like everybody else, he does not have parkinson's. He has a heart condition and therefore he has to take Nitro glycerine pills. Also, you might get wrong. The clay figure that they find at the bottom of the stairs by the cop is just that a clay figure it is not from Iraq. Another one you may get wrong is that Chris is not dating. Burke, she does not like him like that. Hes old, and hes got a drinking problem. She just likes him as a director. Another one you will get wrong. Is that Reagan does not kill the first priest? He died of a heart attack because he had a heart condition, and also when the second priest jumps out the window, he does not kill the demon. The demon moves on to another victim. I think also you're probably gonna ask. How did she become possessed by the devil? Or the demon in question, and it has to do with it. Bored that they found in the basement. That she wanted to play with her mom. Captain howdy came from the board?
@mxmxpr

And what everybody gets wrong... the candle flares because Chris walks beneath a gas line in the attic. It isn't a supernatural moment.

Oh you remind me so much of one of my favorite RU-vid Reaction channel ""EOM". Jay has got to be the most jumpy youtube reaction maker and he must have spent 15 min trying to talk himself out of not watching this movie too.🤣 Those are Nitroglycerin pills, go under the tongue if you feel a Heart Attack beginning. I was 12 years old and saw this movie in '73. There were protestors with signs outside protesting the movie because of the language and violence. The movie was banned in many towns all over the Country. You must understand there was nothing like this before. During the show several people jumped up screamed, and ran out. One guy got and vomited right in the isle. Im happy it was bright sunshine outside. There were the same things happening all over the Country. The movie is based on a true story but the victim was a 14 year old boy. Not much is known because the Vatican sealed the records. During the filming of this movie one person died. Several strange fires popped up around the set. You asked about the voices. It was done by an older lady voice actress. She had to drink a lot of rum and smoke several cigs before doing it. Well you and Jay will be up for a while hope u sleep well............. Next scary movie after this, to me, is ""Alien ' 79."" If u have seen it, try looking for ""The Russian Job" Its about a serial killer in Hollywood, killing Russian girls. Very good mix action, drama, and horror.

Reagan was not possessed by the Devil but the African Wind Demon Pazuzu. Father Karras the actor was a boxer in real life. Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis was up for the role too but it was too controversial for her. #RIP Director William Friedkin who did The French Connection and Cruising. The Detective Lt. Kinderman was in the classic film 12 Angry Men but did not reprise his role in The Exorcisr 3 which was taken by Oscar winner George C. Scott. Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn(Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore) was not first choice but third choice Oscar winner Audrey Hepburn was first but she wanted to do the film in Italy which was too expensive so the Studio went with Oscar winner Patty Duke from The Miracle Worker but she was pregnant and the studio would not wait. The sequel The Exorcist 2: The Heretic is a mess. Not sure how The Exorcist: Believer and the 2 other films will be. Max von Sydow(old priest) is excellent as a ruthless killer in 3 Days of the Condor. Linda Blair would do more Horror in Hell Night and Sorceress plus exploitation in Chained Heat and Savage Streets. A film called ABBY was sued since it was similar and a blackspoiltation version of The Exorcist with Carol Speed and William Marshall(Blacula) The actress Mercedes’ McCambride did the voice of the evil Reagan. It was a theory that Linda Blair lost Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Tatum O’Neal of Paper Moon since she did not do her own voice for the film. According to the book, it was worse with the door closed and the window shut since Reagan kept urinating and defacating on herself making the smell unbearable. There was also an Exorcist tv series which was very good.
