Blatty was a devout Catholic. He didn't push religion at all but his faith informed the subject with depth and significance. Having seen the Exorcist TV show, your review further convinces me that Hollywood should not touch the Exorcist without at least a little respect for Faith. Even William Friedkin, who was Jewish, respected the Christian nature of the story.
@JarMar3296
@JarMar3296 Год назад
Blatty actually did push his beliefs, but because he did it with unwavering conviction, and told a good story it didn't matter. Blatty's Exorcist book and to some extent the film adaptation mission statement was to scare people back to faith. David Gordon Green and Blumhouse's mission statement is how can we milk a franchise.

I thought the movie was well made. William F. never set out to make a horror movie, but one about the nature of evil and faith. True Believer is an examination of the intent of evil and that faith can be strengthened by communal affirmation. I also thought the ending was exceptionally moving, because it shows that sometimes there is a reason for God’s apparent trauma on us. Some times we have to be blind to truly see. It is flawed, but I was quite impressed 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

You know why I liked Halloween 2018 so much? It’s because it was mostly studio interference and David Gordon Green had almost zero creative control over it. Kills had terrible characters, plot and dialogue, but it was still fun. Ends was just straight up insulting and almost made me lose respect for him as a filmmaker. I was actually debating on watching The Exorcist Believer, but I decided to give him one more chance. So I’m gonna watch it tomorrow. Yeah, that's the biggest problem with this movie...WOKENESS... Every movie has an agenda, "real art" got something to say. "Anti woke" moviegoers are so sensitive. Talking about the patriarchy within the church or religious institutions makes total sense. What's not so great, it's the fact that the comment a character makes it's so literal and surface level that in the end, it's just something someone says in the film but doesn't have any impact. It's just exposition with neither payoff nor world/mythology building.

Your comment on the simplistic portrayal of religious folk makes sense. In the original, it was the film’s respect for Catholicism that made the sacrilege so horrifying. Take that away, you don’t have a story worth telling in this world. You don’t need to be religious to sense this horror with a skilled filmmaker like Friedkin. In any case, if there is a silver lining to a movie like this, it’s the quality of reviews like yours. Great job!
@LittleMissRequiem
@LittleMissRequiem Год назад
Not only that, but this abomination of a remake went out of its way to give Christians and ESPECIALLY Catholics a cinematic slap-in-the-face. The “ecumenical exorcism” alone proves this point quite nicely. First of all, the Catholic priest is very conspicuously written out of the “ecumenical exorcism” at the start. Allegedly this was because the local Diocese still believed the girls were suffering from mental illness and forbade the priest from taking part. (Realistically there COULD have been one other reason for the Diocese to forbid the priest from getting involved if the writers ACTUALLY BOTHERED TO DO ANY RESEARCH, but I’ll get to that later.) Later on the priest decides to go through with the exorcism anyway, only for the demon to swiftly kill him off before he can even finish praying the Our Father. If that’s not a blatant middle finger to Catholicism specifically, then I honestly don’t know what is. And secondly, the participants in the “ecumenical exorcism” include a Hoodoo rootwork healer working alongside the Christian exorcists, which would absolutely NEVER happen in reality. Hoodoo, like all pagan religions, is strictly anathema to Christianity. In fact, Catholics in particular believe that pagan/occult practices of any kind would only INVITE DEMONS IN rather than exorcise them. This would have been a MUCH more plausible reason for the Diocese to forbid the priest from getting involved, because having a Catholic priest conduct an exorcism in tandem with a pagan ritual would be a spiritual suicide mission as far as the Catholic Church is concerned. That in turn raises A LOT of serious questions as to why the other Christian denominations didn’t also refuse to participate, but I digress.

David Gordon Green's career can be broken up into three stages: Rustbelt Dramas, Comedy, and Studio Horror. His rustbelt dramas are his least known and best works. His comedies are very hit or miss. His last three attempts at the horror genre range from mediocre to outright horrible. He simply does not have an eye for the genre. His stuff lacks atmosphere, is inoffensive and not scary. Combine that with Blumhouse's track record and it was more or less a guarantee that I wouldn't see this. James, if you want an entertaining possession film, I'd say keep an eye out for When Evil Lurks when it comes out on Shudder later this month. Saw it early and it's a mean spirited blast. From every angle, they are masterful, and perfectly executed. Even the scores are phenomenal. It kind of hurts my heart a bit every time their original legacy of perfection is sullied by what turns out to be, in my opinion, another stupid sequel/remake. The only one that’s escaped that fate is Rosemary’s Baby. For tragic reasons most likely, there are no sequels or remakes thankfully; but nonetheless, there is only one. And yes, despite it’s criminal fugitive maker, that film IS FCKNG PERFECT. The original 'The Exorcist" aside from being a masterpiece was also extreme. Which is the only way it can be if you tell a tale about an actual demon possessing a young girl and destroying her innocence. The Exorcist III was also extreme but in a different way. Rather than showing anything, the verbal descriptions of the murders were hair-raising. My point is, unless you have the BALLS to make your Exorcist (or any demonic possession) movie extreme in some way, just keep making your boring slashers. Instead we get all these nutless, lukewarm possession movies that don't even come close to crossing the line, like "The Rite", and "The Pope's Exorcist" and now this. The Exorcist was made literally HALF A CENTURY ago, and it still has more courage than these modern POS.

This "movie" sounds like an absolute travesty. If they went to the trouble of getting Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair back why not make the entire film about them? They could've done something interesting like The Taking of Deborah Logan where Chris is now the one who is possessed and Reagan has to save her mother. That could've given Ellen Burstyn some good material to work with and its not just a carbon copy of the original because its an old woman not a little girl being possessed. David Gordon Green needs to stay away from horror especially established IPs because he's not only butchered Halloween but now The Exorcist.

I'm 26 and was too scared to rewatch 1973 The Exorcist. Saw it at age 12 and it traumatized me to pieces. ... Well now I may go make myself rewatch it to cleanse my brain of this movie existing. Also that patriarchy line was so poorly made. Father Merrin and Father Karras were entering the most dangerous territory ever. Pazuzu's presence. It would have potentially killed Regans mother, with her not being religious. Only those with the Father Son and Holy Spirit can attempt to endure such a thing.

David Gordon Green's horror movies aren't shit because of the direction. It's the writing that is awful. They couldn't even competently tackle a dumb slasher series, so there was NO WAY the writers could come close to matching the talent, maturity, and intelligence of William Peter Blatty's writing. This Exorcist trilogy was doomed from the get go. Having said that, Halloween 2018 had so much more directorial style than either of the sequels that I have to wonder what went wrong. Were the movies too rushed? Did he lose a very talented cinematographer/camera operator after the first one?

I think calling David Gordon Green the worst director alive is an overstatement. Blumhouse was obviously very overconfident in his abilities after Halloween 2018 made way more money than they anticipated, and Carpenter's involvement is largely the reason why. When Halloween Ends flopped, he was immediately placed in the unenviable position of directing a sequel to the film regarded as one of the scariest films ever made. I can't imagine he had a great time making this film, and the reception towards this film can't be easy on the man. He's just doing what he knows what to do, which is better than a film maker trying to be something they are not. In other words, David Gordon Green was not acting alone when he made this movie and the people that encouraged him to take this project, will probably hide behind him when the reception hits its worst.

Its safe to say that Legion: Exorcist 3 continues to be the best sequel and rightfully so. Excellent review.

God it’s so unfortunate that it treats faith so mockingly. I’m not a believer by any means, but I also don’t spit on people of faith as long as they aren’t perpetually proselytizing, and the original does an amazing job of showing that faith can be a powerful force for good, even if you don’t believe. It’s also so insane they’d take that tact with southern Christians, because these guys make the Righteous Gemstones, a show that absolutely craps all over the rich, powerful organizations that hoard money in the name of God but never takes a superior or derisive stance on faith itself, much to that show’s benefit.

First half wasn't bad but once they hit that scene with Chris and the girl in the room, the rest of the "film" hit the wall. Why did she agree to that? Maybe Universal & Blumhouse will agree to do what was done in 2004 and just redo the 2nd half and release. Also, the amount of religious ignorance is hard to swallow. Catholics, Protestants, and some VooDoo woman would never agree to cooperate. Should have kept it Catholic and bring back Ben Daniels from the series as the priest (same character).
