theres something similar that's produced, its called what we do in the shadows and its a documentary style movie about vampires being goofy, borat is a closish movie style
Well there are two types of scares, shock and tention, a jumpscare has shock value and isn't inherently bad, but on it's own it's only half of the equasion. A horror piece (film or game) needs both shock and tention to achieve good scares. Also jumpscares are obviously not the only way to achieve shock just the most convenient. A good example of a good use is when you raise the tention of the scene after the jumpscare instead of dispell it, that way it overloads the viewer and makes it less fleeting.
@@im2arrogant118 To me, horror is when what you're seeing makes you feel real emotions like dread or regret. Like when you see all the failed Ripley clones in Alien Resurrection or when Charlie dies in Hereditary and Peter goes home and waits for their mom's inevitable reaction.
@@reversalmushroom Regret isn't necessarily a 'scary' emotion and therefore doesn't fall under the same definition, but I get what you mean. Otherwise both examples fall under the tension category I mentioned. Shock is when an immediate reaction is elicited. Tension is when a feeling is being built up over time. Like I said, everything 'scary' falls under those 2 factors. Hereditary especially is incredibly adept at using tension, the scene you mentioned being a great example of it. I'm obviously simplifying my explanations here drastically as to not write a novel in a yt comment, but I hope I make enough sense.
Imagine spending $400 million for the rights to a franchise, then shitting all over it because you didn't want to spend a small amount of that money to pay writers. Unbelievable.
I would love to see a demon possession movie where the demons goal and/or motivation is actually explained and explored. Like, how does jumping into a human and then just being kind of a gross asshole for a while effect the celestial battle between good and evil on a cosmic scale? I'm missing that part of the narrative and I would like to have it.
I would recommend "Nefarious" for a good example of that. Fair warning, the film is VERY Christian (and I mean honest to God Evangelist Conservative Christian) but is actually really well done and explores the idea of demonic possession and gives a (from what actually exorcists have described demonic possession as) pretty realistic look at demonic possession (if you believe in it)
The episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog where they parody The Exorcist and Muriel gets possessed is legitimately scarier than this movie, and that demon was defeated by a dog in a dress chanting "kick 'em in the dishpan, hoo hoo hoo".
This is just such a perfect example of franchise obsession. They didn’t care if the movie was good or not, they just cared about having a franchise they can lure people into the theater with. Absolutely pathetic.
@@eyegnieesllA Simple: You blame both. And yes you can. And you simply sacrifice some of your braincells to listen to the absolute woke garbage the privileged white collar 6 figure making cast and crew are looking to shovel down your throat with the most repulsive, disgusting, worst possible attitude they can possibly have about it.
@@hebat45 Yeah, NOW. In like the last year or 2. Now that it's become "cool" or "popular" to hate on them. They have been making BANK for not putting in the SLIGHTEST bit of effort whatsoever and blatantly spitting on anyone who enjoyed their films for like a whole DECADE before hand.
I recommend The Cleansing Hour. It's an above average horror movie where a fake exorcist has to deal with a real demon on a live stream. The main actress does an amazing job.
i think it would be cool if they explored the idea of the whole world getting possessed or nearly the whole world somehow and it’s like the church against the whole world of possessed people kinda like a crusade or world war z or smth idk i think it would be cool
If more people knew the story of what that lady went through with the first Exorcist movie then they'd understand why she was given a roll where no one would notice if she said "no" to it; because there probably was a good chance that she would have said no, or backed out.
Jokes aside, Charlie’s idea to buy Jimmy Neutron and make a series centered around Hugh Neutron is an amazing idea that I would gladly spend money to watch
Literally came here to say this. Honestly the fact that Nickelodeon has completely abandoned doing anything with Jimmy Neutron or Fairly Odd Parents is baffling to me. I guess if it's not SpongeBob they feel like they won't make any money off it.
@@frofrozzty Spongebob makes alot of easy money since the writers don't have to worry about any episodes being connected. I bet a proper return to Jimmy Neutron or Fairly odd parents could make a good amount of money, but there isn't a place for shows with stories in modern nickelodeon
@@Mr._Pancakes I can certainly guarantee with the effort he gives his own content. He could make a banger horror film, but giving critique doesn't mean you want to create your own. He could point out issues in a AAA game doesn't mean he wants to try and make a AAA game.
13:20 Constantine did this well, a good 15 years ago. That movie had a lot of issues, but that exorcism scene was excellent, with all the preparation and effort it takes to perform, it really sells the idea of struggling to remove a malevolent entity from someone.
Let’s not forgot that the director of this movie is currently speed running for a world record trying to make dull trilogies out of every notable horror franchise of the last 50 years.
@@CentiPlays I can understand you defending Halloween and Halloween kills. But Ends ? That movie was just a super combo of shitty sequel, retarded story, disrespect to Myers and bland ending.
Most of that money was actually used just to get Ellen Burstyn 😂 They made her so many offers that she kept refusing because she thought the script was ass and finally after they offered her twice as much as the most she’s ever made from a film and agreed to pay for an entire fundraiser she was very passionate about she finally agreed and then she shit on the script publicly months before the release lmao
Not really. Universal HAD to promise a trilogy in order to get the rights, and they had to get their streaming service Peacock to handle the sequels if need be so that they could guarantee that the sequels would be made one way or another, and this deal was made before the streaming bubble began to burst, in a time when Netflix paid nearly $500 million for the rights to two Knives Out sequels.
@@troin3925 What I mean was when the substantial growth streaming was having began to slow down last year and investors began to question studios that had their own streaming services on how exactly they were planning to make them profitable after spending ludicrous amounts of money on exclusive content for them. This is part of the reason why there’s been stuff in the last year and a half like price hikes, the introduction of and focus on ad-supported tiers, crackdowns on password sharing, and content being pulled from streaming services or canned all together in the name of tax write offs or cost cutting, as well as a renewed focus on licensing content out to other streaming services. The fact of the matter is that with the exception of Netflix (and even they have shown to not be completely immune to all this), streaming isn’t really a substantial business, and the studios that had their own streaming services were caught off guard when the streaming bubble began to burst.
"erm acktchually, verbalace only spent ~$50,000.00 where as the subject of this video is a company that spent ~$400,000,000.00" -🤓 (my dork ass needs to go the fuck outside)
Ellen Burysten is trailer full. It happens all the time lately. She's all over the trailer and the fans scream: "SHE'S BACK!! I'M SOOOO EXCITED NOW!!!" also, she turned down the role 3x. She finally asked for an outrageous amount of money and then asked DOUBLE that and said she accepted the role for that mount. They agreed. She donated the money to an arts college.
It must be great being an actor or actress/celebrity. Can demand outrageous amounts of money just for their participation. Name any other profession where you can pull bs like that?
@@joshuah9109 Yeah but still, it shows just how easy celebrities in general have it in general. Just have money thrown at them just for existing basically. But it also shows just how much money big corporations have that they can just willynilly throw buckets of money down the drain like it's no big deal.
@@SpinoRexy733 Oh, I agree 💯! The production company paid $400million simply for the right to THE EXORCIST to make a planned trilogy. This 1st film is getting terrible reviews and the box office numbers don't look promising. So they likely just threw away $400miilion!!
no it wouldnt lol sounds awful but idk if awful in a good way or bad way. they already tried something with sheen and it was terrible. the same thing would happen there
The biggest crime in this film is the total betrayal of Chris (Ellen Bs character) and Reagans relationship. After EVERYTHING they went through and the bond they made in the first film (even deeper in the book) it makes no sense to me that Chris would betray Reagan by going against her wishes to write that book. Furthermore such a massive thing is Chris' gratitude towards the two priests in The Exorcist, and then in this film she makes som joke about them upholding the patriarchy???
Interesting to see this comment (haven’t seen the new movie) because that’s something that also happened in the tv show, which I had thought they were retconning. I actually liked the tv show though
Of course they brought modern shit into this. I bet too that Angela is the black girl. As soon as I heard the choice clip in the trailer I knew the black girl would live cuz it’s impossible for her not to at this point in Hollywood. Wish none had to die but still thought it was funny I called it
You normies are still very clueless about the cul....al mar....m. its not modern...its good old mar.....st pro....da to flip over the natives society to take ov...er their coun....es. Ah ja..........so, so clueless......
Charlie mentioning the jumpscares where they're just talking or doing something mundane is definitely true, but I know exactly why they did it. Because the original did, but they missed the execution and the purpose. The original had scenes where the main character would be just lying down or talking to a doctor and they would subtly flash a frame of a demon, meant to represent that the demon who possessed them is present and make the viewer feel dread. But, of course, they didn't use a noise or overuse it. I actually love the Exorcist 3's big jumpscare of the movie, so I feel like there is a proper way to use them and this new one didn't know how.
This movie doesn't do it as strong as the original, but much of the flashing at least has to do with what they're discussing or relates somewhat to what's happening in the movie. And I think it keeps the viewer on edge and a little anxious, so long as they're willing to be invested in the movie they're watching. The flashing Imagery isn't used as good as the original, but a lot of this movie does what the original did well enough, and I think it's recieving too much flack for it
I saw Possum's review of it. "Why did the two priests that died to save your daughter didn't let you see the exorcism that would definitely traumatise you for life? Patriarchy". Patriarchy indeed, lol.
My favorite bit of possession-related media to date is the Faith game series. You genuinely don't need millions of dollars to make a captivating horror experience.
Dude, the part when you're reading the note and it starts getting super twisted and horrible and goes off the rails, and when you finish and realize you're a horrid little crawling demon yourself... that part was so shocking that I started laughing out loud like I had been possessed! XD Faith is such a great series
The 3rd exorcist is fantastic, and is only called exorcist 3 because the studio changed the name. It’s directed by the author of the exorcist book and is based off his other stuff
Calling the demon "nothing but a nuisance" is such a good descriptor for it, lmaoo. After the demon pokes out the ladies' eyes, it goes, "If you want to see your daughter again, just open your eyes! Hahaha". Like.. what do these demons even want?? What's the point?? They never tell us. So, part of me always finds it funny that these demons just terrorize these families purely for the fun of it. I can never take it seriously.
I think in theory demons are just corrupt souls turned evil by being tortured in hell, so once they get out and start using humans bodies as vessels, they’re out for vengeance. They’re angry and just want to punish really anybody even if they had nothing to do with their damnation
the original exorcist also did the image thing where the picture of pazuzu would pop up on screen, but ofc in that movie it made sense and was only for a second, but that was them trying to capture the same spookiness
I lost all interest and hope in Horror movies a fair while ago. Nobody knows how to make a good horror movie anymore. They just pump out absolute CRAP. It's actually so sad because I use to LOVE the genre.
I just watched this movie, and let me just say that I was with a group of friends who all get easily scared, but while this movie was playing we were all giggling at how goofy the characters and editing were. Out of the whole film we agreed that the only successfully executed jump scare was the one with the snake (small 2 min long clip at the beginning, with no plot connection). It felt like this movie was the farthest thing from a horror movie ever.
I heard leslie odom jr was a good actor in it, and i feel like i've been hearing that a lot... reviewers say "this movie is absolute garbage which is a shame because [mildly well-known actor] did extremely well and this could have been their huge breakthrough moment into true mainstream stardom and now they have to find something else"
Hollywood is terrified of letting established and complete franchises rest on their laurels and take chances on new IPs. Hopefully this L will be a lesson to them. They have to learn eventually that people arent just gonna show up for a movie just because they know it. You have to put in effort and actually create something good and worth showing up for.
Imagine if Charlie gets baked asf then goes on the internet and find something that he finds hilarious then hits record and talks about it for 9 minutes
i have to ask what you thought of the original exorcist. when i saw the original in theatres (it was a fathom event a few years ago) i left the theatre legitimately trembling. it’s a masterpiece of suspense building and very rarely relied on any jumpscares. it took its time and i loved it.
Well he did say the original was the iconic horror film, the film that started it all. Seems like he thinks it deserves it's accolades. Exorcist II was one of the worst movies ever made though. If this one is worse, then it must be lethally bad.
Please keep making content like this for people like me who will NEVER watch these movies but still like to be in the loop. These videos are better than the actual movie for me haha
Charlie! I met you last night and asked for a picture! I wanted to say something that I didn’t get a chance to say! People love you and your content because you’re genuine, have a great moral compass, and a great sense of humor. You don’t have a massive editing team behind you or anything. It’s just you, your camera, and your personality. I really do love it. I think there’s proof of that in your follower count but I just wanted to be able to say thank you! Thanks for letting my boys and I take that picture what a special moment.
The reason they used those flashing images was because, in the original, there are interlaced frames of disturbing images used to create a subliminal feeling of dread. They happen so quickly that the viewer hardly has time to register it. At some point, after the original was released, censorship laws made it illegal to use subliminal imagery/messaging in any form of media. Thats why they have to make it more apparent this time around.
I literally forgot they were making another Exorcist movie until this video. And tbh I'm still wondering why the studio thought another Exorcist movie was gonna do well
honestly I just saw it and i think it suffers the most from just not knowing what its suppose to be. It tries to be so many things, and fails at all of them. Honestly just hilarious the amount of money seen dropped into this film to see blumhouse who is used to not trying but with low risk, actually take a gamble and fail so spectacularly
Exorcist III is incredible tbh. The 2nd sucks but the 3rd is equally scary & well written as the first, even though it’s only loosely related to the first (Father Dyer & Kinderman)
I saw the movie just now and i thought it wasn't too bad, an obvious cash grab to bring the mother back. I really liked the ending where the demons tricked the parents and how only one of them survived. I thought it was going to be way worse; it wasn't.
It's sad that the industry has become so oversaturated and only choosing to invest in shows or movies that are already established IPs. I hear it's so bad that scriptwriters have been going backward for a while to turn their script into a published book so that it may hopefully be adapted on screen.
13:25 that’s Rumplestiltskin and it’s actually a smart implication for a movie about exorcising demons. In biblical context, saying the creature’s name means you have power over it (think back to genesis when Adam was naming all the animals). That’s also why demons don’t say their name because they don’t want to give away their power to their victims.
I watched it with a few friends and the only chills and frights we got were the ac in the theater being probably set to max and my best friend almost hitting my face when he stretched his arms
The jump scares weren’t really jumpscares per se, they were tryna replicate pazuzus face popping up throughout the original movie. They didn’t do it well regardless but that’s what that was about.
the reason i love SAW so much, is because the movie makes you get attatched and understand all the characters while contributing to the stories big ending, and they only die at the end after youve gotten attatched, not killed immidietetly after a quick exchange lol
The name thing at least has actual mythological foundation. In a lot of older beliefs if you learn somethings True Name and speak it, it gives you a significant amount of power over the being. Even with humans those beliefs state that if you learn the name of someones soul you can control them
I've noticed similar concepts with the writing of this movie and for other shows/movies : the writers are doing whatever they want with 0 explanation. It's purely to move the story forward.
This makes me sad man...my mom is a HUGE fan of the OG movie and is super excited to see this with her friend soon. I hope she isn't too disappointed:(
The funniest thing about this movie was the fact that the marketing was actually good, but they'd do it even during the day. Myself watching an NFL game with my 2 year old sitting next to me and all of a sudden she screams at the TV. xD WHAT WERE THEY THINKING.
I will say in contrast to most possession movies, this one tried the theme of Christianity does nothing/has no power over possessions. Everyone reading Bible passages had no effect on the demon. Even the priest had zero effect, legit getting his neck snapped. The demon only left because it wanted to. Not because it was compelled to.
17:53 even at $400 I don't think they could get their money back on the next two. as someone who likes to laugh at horror movies as entertainment (and also for thrill, depending on the quality), it offended me that this was neither GOOD nor bad enough to be fun to watch. It's just so boring, and I don't think i can respect this franchise anymore.
I couldn’t finish this vid it’s so unsurprising but sad that the legacy of every film has to be watered down for profit. Miss the days of a one-off banger
To be fair to the movie, a demon’s intention is not to kill someone. I think it makes sense that the demon would instead force the people to choose which girl will die, and allow them to suffer with that knowledge the rest of their lives
If you're as tired of possession movies as Charlie is. Like him I'd recommend the movie "talk to me". It's really well made, the stakes feel like they matter and it's an accurate description of how powerless we'll be if a spirit in limbo is inside us.
@@771shadowolf Yes, but the main reason why people are tired of possession movies isn't the concept itself. Its because most of them are piles of garbage; so a good one would be a breath of fresh air.
I almost went to see this cause it seemed good, first "horror" movie in a long time. Friends I was making plans to go with went without me one weekend lmao...
