Yes, the change in actor for Avasarala's husband was quite jarring.

Yes, they had to recast Arjun Avasarala. The previous actor, Brian George, got a different contract very soon after the show was cancelled by SyFy and couldn't get out of that contract to return. The new actor, Michael Benyaer, is good enough, but he doesn't fit the gentle character as developed by Brian George. Mchael Benyaer presents a much more forceful Arjun. Fun fact: Michael Benyaer also played a similar role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Spock's prospective father-in-law and the husband of a very Avasarala-like Vulcan wife. But, wait, there's more: The actress playing Benyaer's Avasarala-like wife is the same woman who plays Avasarala's daughter on The Expanse. Miller is the Ring building device. As he said, he (the Ring building device) still needs to "file a report" of the successful completion of the Ring with the Builders. It's not the Builders, it's the device they built still trying to carry out its programming. But the Protomolecule devices on Illus have some completely different purpose. Miller (the Ring building device) has no knowledge of what the Illus devices are...he's just flipping switches trying to find the answer to contacting his masters.

Probably weird, but the scenes that hit hard emotionally for me this episode are Naomi revealing how gravity is affecting her, and Chrisjen offering Bobbi a job. Just great expressive acting!

The Beings are dead. They don’t want anything. They aren’t doing anything. They are dead. But they CREATED a thing “a tool” to do the Work for them. They were advanced enough to give that Thing a level of artificial intelligence. That Thing is looking for its makers. Failing that, that Thing at least wants to find what happened to those makers.

We've seen that the Protomolecule takes things apart and reassembles them in ways that are useful. It needed a pilot, so it used Julie. Last season whilst floating towards the Nucleus, Miller described Holden as having a Spaceship, so he's a tool that goes places: Miller is a tool that finds things. Imagine the Protomolecule is a robot, tasked with building the Ring Gate, then using it and reporting back. It's got through the Ring, and there's nobody to report to - what does it do now? My understanding is that it's doing it's best to understand what happened so that it can figure out what it's supposed to do next. It can't complete it's task, but it doesn't have a new one. We've seen in the Nucleus at the centre of the Slow Zone that the creators of the Protomolecule left hardware and tech behind, as it says, through Miller, "a bunch of locked doors and lights on a timer". Thanks to Holden, the Protomolecule has gotten close enough to Ilus that it can start to interface with the hardware that's been there for over a billion years, and so there's imperfections like the tree root. Again, I don't think he knows what he's looking for: there's a mystery so the Protomolecule has deployed him to ask questions for it. We've also seen that it's not entirely Miller - when Holden asked him was he actually Miller, or the Protomolecule just wearing his face, and asked him about Julie Mao, he couldn't answer. Instead he vanished and reappeared a little later, able to answer, and Holden said "It's good to see you, Miller" so it's pretty unclear how much he can be trusted.

His name is "The Investigator". The protomolecule's job is to build these gate networks. The protomolecule operates by disassembling things that it finds, and repurposing them. Miller has been repurposed. “-it reaches out it reaches out it reaches out it reaches out- One hundred and thirteen times a second, nothing answers and it reaches out. It is not conscious, though parts of it are. There are structures within it that were once separate organisms; aboriginal, evolved, and complex. It is designed to improvise, to use what is there and then move on. Good enough is good enough, and so the artifacts are ignored or adapted. The conscious parts try to make sense of the reaching out. Try to interpret it.” They're dead, and cannot answer. But the protomolecule's entire purpose it to try to find them again. It can't... but it must.

I think the connection between Miller and Holden stems from when they got irradiated together in season 1. Glad you're enjoying it and looking forward to the next one. Stay safe.

Okay. I know how I’m going to come off when I say this but. Murtry isn’t wrong here. The UN doesn’t have the authority over the whole human race and galaxy, but he thinks he’s following the laws. Avasarala is wildly overstepping her place as the head of earth and thinking she can dictate galaxy wide rules and that just isn’t true. The belters should have treated RCE as an invasion if they wanted to keep it to themselves. No side is willing to go ALL the way, because of the PR implications, but Murtry isn’t wrong for thinking these people have and will attack his team, who have a legal (in his mind) mandate to be there.
