The Barbary lion, also known as the Atlas lion, was a majestic subspecies of lion that once inhabited the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. Renowned for its impressive size, luxurious mane, and regal presence, the Barbary lion was considered the symbol of strength and royalty in the region. However, due to a combination of habitat loss, hunting, and human encroachment, the Barbary lion was declared extinct in the wild in the early 20th century. Efforts are being made to preserve the memory of this magnificent creature through conservation initiatives and genetic research, with the hope of eventually reintroducing a genetically similar lion population to its native range. The Barbary lion remains an iconic symbol of African wildlife and a poignant reminder of the need to protect and preserve endangered species.

And total ass kickers. They were the dominant predator in Romans coliseums. Virtually every other animal was taken out by the Barbaey lion. Bowman said the Barbary line was so hard to defeat they started putting it in handicap matches and even some of them it won.

@marshallwayne-uf4pq what is up with people and purity culture? That doesn't matter and fun fact sometimes evolution can take a close relative and that species ends up evolving into the once thought extinct species. It's the environment and evolutionary pressures that cause them to redeveloped those characteristics. That said one can literally bring those characteristics back with the ancestors it just takes selective breeding to get it back as everything has a dominant as well as recessive trait, so some of these lions can carry their ancestors trait.

@@Portthefirst -Although I do agree with you, the tigers are overall more powerful, faster, and agile... That paw swipe mentioned, since to me like nothing more than an exaggeration.... Is probably no more than around just half that, with the bite force, being higher, depending on the size of the tiger.. Around 1,000 to 1,900 lbs, and for lions around 700 to 1,200 lbs...

Every time an animals height and weight are told to us on every different documentary they have different numbers and their exaggerated too often there's a chance we're getting these weights from all the captive Barbary lines and all lines that are well fed and captivity are heavier I'm not a lion expert but that does come to my mind first

I was lucky enough to see a female in zoo in New Zealand. Unfortunately the two males died of cancer. The zoo closed and all animals euthanasia 😢

Just an edit the barbary might not be extinct as some people kept them in cages (usually royals), but some of their offspring are in captivity. They have yet to be tested, but apparently scientists are working on figuring out if these lions are extinct or could be brought back from the very brink.

I wonder if they had coalition's like modern-day Asian and African lions. These are usually a group of three or four unrelated males who have driven out of their pride when they got a certain age and so they join with other young Lions until they are big enough to attempt a pride takeover. This coalition is the only male lions that will not kill Cubs even if they're not the father if their partner is then they will protect the Cubs

Most of the people in the comments don't have a clue of what they're talking about. Lions not tigers are the most muscular and powerful of all land predators. Tigers have no paw strike, they kill their prey by grabbing on and throat biting. Lions are way more robust than tigers and their paw strike has been compared to a drop hammer. There has been so much video and scientific evidence of this that I can't believe people are still comparing tigers to lions!

@@pavlingeorgiev1134 Is that the best you can do! It wasn't a real fight. They were not in the same enclosure. There was a small gap between the cages and the tiger was able to get his paw through the opening and sever the lions jugular vein. The lion was just sitting there unaware of the cowardly tigers attack. Plus it was a lioness. Typical tiger fan lies. It's a fact, tigers have weak paw strikes. They are grabbers not strikers. They slash with their paws. Get your facts straight.

@@AnimalSnapz From what I've heard of them, there are no true 100% Barbary lions, but only hybrids. I guess that luxurious dark brown or black mane is part of the phenotype. But I encourage you to look up videos of the Delta lions. The lionesses are sometimes bigger than males in other regions. They have broad muscular chests and thick necks like males, and the males are huge! The reason is that they live where it's very wet. They've even had to adapt to swimming and wading. The waters cut them off from the smaller easier game so they are left having to hunt water buffalo. As you may know, water buffalo are a dangerous option because the bulls are so massive, they have been know to gore and toss lions in the air like ragdolls, so they usually only hunt them as a last resort. The water buffalo is the primary food source for the Delta lion so they've adapted to hunt them by evolving into a much larger lion breed. It's really fascinating.

They are working slowly to reintroduce the Barbary lion into the wild into his native habitat. They are the largest lions in the world and the dominant cat in the Roman Colosseum. As Tiberius said the Barbary lion come out on top against all animals and it was chosen as their symbol of bravery as well as fighting skill only the Barbary lion. Due to its very large overflowing mane which protected it it won some fights in which they thought it would be defeated including against bears. Although they knew of the African Lion and the Nubian lion they chose the Barbary lion as their symbol.
