Running Scared is a B movie, but it's a really good one - a product of the mid-2000s/post-9/11 aesthetic. Visually dark and digital.

One thing that blew my mind was finding a clip of Jim Varney pre-Ernest. Dude is a legit, stone-cold classically trained actor. Look it up, there's a clip of him online doing a soliloquy from Hamlet, full-on British accent and everything. My whole life I thought he was just some yokel who lucked out.

I will never forget the very specific feeling of watching a DVD trailer with the footage and sound bites randomly chopped up and mismatched, then years later seeing those specific scenes of the actual thing advertised and it’s like a weird low-level Mandela effect.

If you told me that Robert De Niro and Robert Duvall played a preist and a hot headed cop, I really would've thought that De Niro would be the cop and Duvall the preist. I mean Duvall could play a good cop but De Niro as a preist just seems like an odd choice.

As someone who was half a film bro ( Casablanca has always been one of my favs) I just wanted to add (because I am very old) Jim Varneys Ernest character first came to the public eye by doing local milk commercials. I had a video tape of a out 100 different commercials he did. The Video tapes were traded around in the 80s sorta like casserole tapes of the jerky boys made rounds prior to their cinema masterpiece

I figured from your Dumpster Diving LB reviews that this would end up being one big video. I like how this video puts a focus to all the movies no one else would be talking about otherwise. The use of going through old DVDs helps make the whole concept of looking through a bunch of less talked about movies makes it more interesting. Stuart Townsend was supposed to play Strider in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson wasn't happy with Townsend's performance and replaced him with Viggo Mortensen.

Personally , I almost exclusively buy dvds, purely because I want to be able to watch my films on anything from a 20 year old DVD player/ ps2 to a ps5/Blu-ray player etc etc. as long as dvds are universally compatible with disc players I will support it! LOVE THE VIDEO!!

That was a pretty cool concept for a video, can't wait for the second part. I've seen four of these movies. I actually enjoyed Running Scared back then, but I was younger and more tolerable to Tarantino inspired movies (although, even then I didn't care for Boondock Saints). I liked this fairytale with a twist concept, Vera Farmiga, and only two scenes I vividly remember are the hockey rink one and everything with a pair of creepy pedophiles. I guess, it's better not to revisit that movie, though... As for 9 1/2 Weeks, Pink Cadillac and Edmond (I miss Stuart Gordon), I totally agree.

I first watched Ernest goes to Jail (with my 1.5 year younger brother) when I was about 6. I don't remember whether I had been worried the first time he was going to be executed, but I know that I watched the VHS so many times that it ruined the tracking. What can I say... We 80's/90's kids were built different. I would not let my kids watch it, lol.

I do so hate elitism, and have often been the bearer of strife on groups or posts when an elitist steps in and verbally lashes some person for showing off their new DVDs or when discussing a movie holds up a DVD during the review as if they don't really OWN the movie if "It's only on DVD". As can be seen in almost every monthly update video I make, I DO indeed replace many of my favorite DVS with their bluray releases, but I am also always adding NEW DVDs to my collection. It goes without saying Bluray offers more room for better transfers and are significantly harder to damage, and are a safer bet for long term ownership. BUT one trip on google will answer the question that DVDs have a lifetime that may surprise you if cared for properly. I myself can pull out dvds I've had for 20+ years and it plays perfectly fine. I don't knock bluray, but I also don't knock DVD, many films can only be (For either availability or price) gotten on DVD. Be it that they've never had a BR release at all, or some "Boutique" got a hold of them and releases 3K copies for a world of 8 billion people and no one can afford them. My DVDs are displayed and in full view in my Blockbuster style home (lol), right along side their BR siblings, and they are just as loved and cared for. And every month I add new DVDs to my collection, maybe not as many as I use to in favor of affordable BRs, but they are still an acceptable purchase, and I do so every month for one reason or the other. So to the elitists, I could not care less what you think about my DVDs, they are lobed just fine. lmao. I Love Running Scared, just got the BR of it to go with my DVD of it (which I'm keeping because its's got a graphic novel in it). Boondock Saints and it's sequel are the bomb here in my heart as well. Those statements being said, you can now see this rant is both a praise, and an accusation. lol

Man, this just made memories of my own DVD-collecting teen years come flooding right back! I was already almost entering young adulthood when making the transition from VHS to DVD and just getting into the R-rated stuff that I gathered at FYE or Best Buy or Suncoast Motion Picture Company - and it was awesome! I even got Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide in my mid-teens! Man how much time flew! Can't wait to see what Part Deux will bring!

Running Scared honestly looks like a sick as hell explo movie. Appaloosa looks pretty fun too as a good ol' Western with a great cast. I know about The Terror because of Hollywood Boulevard riffing on it pretty funnily. Looking forward to the next one!

Strikingly, even though it’s not a hugely acclaimed film, it did have some decent reviews, including from Roger Ebert, who also praised the director’s other film The Cooler. Might give Running Scared, and The Cooler, a chance in light of this.

Your mention of Paul Greengrass reminded me of his superb film Bloody Sunday, which may have been a direct inspiration for a movie about protests in Seattle, since it's about the military suppression of a protest in Derry. Greengrass is able to maintain narrative interest using his quasi-documentary style without ever indulging in predictable tropes. I re-watched it after seeing Andor - I was looking for possible inspirations for the TV show, and Bloody Sunday has many similarities to Andor's final episode.

True Confessions - when it was made producers had no idea who the actual dahlia killer was. But years later it turned out she was killed by a psycho doctor, who was best friend to director John Huston. The case was solved by an LA cop who was a brother to Mike Hodel, an LA radio talk show host on KPFK. The info came out years after the clueless producers made their film, and after the deaths of both Hodel and Huston.

I've never read anything by Dennis Lehane, but I hate all of his movies! They all have actors who are irl douchebags, and I find the storylines so hokey and contrived. I think Tim Robbins character and storyline is the only good part of that movie. Also those movies, along with the Departed, are so dated to thier era/vibe that I feel like is made specifically not for me. I can't even really define it.

Ernest goes to camp is one of those 8-10 trash-tier movies that went on repeat on broadcast TV during my childhood that really caught my attention, and those movies have stuck with me to this day; their memes, their messages (or lack thereof), and the fact that they're all bad, and I love them for it.

Nine and Half Weeks was the headlined movie in its day, but honestly I found this film to be dull. Nice montage’s and soundtrack, and Mickey Rourke never looked better than he did here, but after 75 minutes I was looking at my watch.

I beg to differ on 'I'm Going To Get You Sucka' not being funny. Maybe it's a cultural thing, or an age difference (I'm 46 👴🏾). Almost anyone I know, can immediately recognize any line from it. Heck, I probably quote it a few times a month, in casual conversation 😂. I also think it was less of a parody, and more of an homage...or at least somewhere in between... But then again, I was 12 when I first saw it, so it might be my glasses nostalgia as well...

I'm glad to see you appreciate a good "B" horror film - made before the '70s! Oh, and "Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan in "Space Jam"!? I like how you so matter-of-factly inserted that little gem! I've never seen it, but "Christmas Evil" has come up before as a worthwhile character study. There must be something to it. I'll probably check that one out. While I do have a shelf loaded with blu rays, I never scrapped my DVDs. They typically have more extra features, which blu ray releases tend to not get. Some blu rays you get lucky on though.

I'm so sorry, APPALOOSA'S action sequences do NOT "quickly fizzle" they accurately represent what true gunfights are like...over in seconds with a few shots. Ed Harris apparently decided to present this action in a concise and realistic manner as did the novel this film was based on.

loved the Ernest movies when I was a kid, but the only ones I really vividly remember are Ernest Goes to Jail and Ernest Scared Stupid, which I honestly think Ernest Scared Stupid holds up, not that it's ground breaking cinema, but like it gets so ridiculous that you can't help not to laugh.

I'm only halfway through your video, but I have to say I think you went too easy on De Niro in True Confessions. That was one of his many 1980s "staring into space" performances: appallingly miscast and no conviction. Strange to think this is the same actor who was incredibly vivid in The King Of Comedy around the same time.

Totally agree with you about "Edmond"- very undervalued film, Macy is brilliant. Definitely disagree with you on "Christmas Evil"- cheap, tacky, badly performed trash in my opinion. You like the hideous 80s lighting in "Nine and a Half Weeks"? Bizarre! By the way, if you think "Sucka" is a bad spoof, what about "Silence Of The Hams"? One of the worst films ever made.

I get the feeling you are not too enamoured by Adrian Lynn. While I think his later works was not that good as his earlier works in the 1980s which were extremely good. However in the 1990s lost his mojo and has not recovered in since. He is a directory that only shined in one decade only the 1980s. I still think he is a solid film maker especially in the 1980s. I thought Flashdance and 9 1/2 weeks (Kim Basinger was hot great casting choice by Adrian Lynn) were very made entertaining movies well acted and directed with a good solid and intelligent scripts both analysing love and sexual relationships between a man and woman well you might call it slease I call it good film making and both movies were beatifully shot. I do agree though his later movies like indecent proposal and later on were rubbish. He should have probably retired in 1990 because his creative and good form were clearly lost after 1990.

"It doesn't help the gang the heroes are fighting against are a literal white supremacist group which doesn't really jell with the light comedy the film seems to be going for" - yeah, imagine if films like the blues brothers or blazing saddles incorporated nazis and klansmen in their comedic output, this would make these films utterly unwatchable and instantly unfunny, glad that didn't happen.

Ha. I'd argue different styles of comedy bring different standards. Blazing Saddles is openly a satire of racism, that's where the comedy comes from. In Pink Cadillac the bad guys serve little more than a plot device. Blues Brothers is a better comparison given it less essential (and the movie is also a chase movie to an extent) but that movie also stars and was made by legitimate comedians more apt at finding laughs in the material.

@@EyebrowCinema I think it also comes down to filmmaker's experiences, seems like the director and screenwriter only had 3 movies in their entire careers and Clint Eastwood is not an actor/director easily associated with a genre with a distinct non-comedic screen prescense whereas both John Landis and Mel Brooks are no strangers to comedy.
