Fernando Alonso has been unhappy with the way F1 drivers are policed at the start of races this year. But after raising complaints about rivals getting away with abusing track limits in the opening corners of races, and feeling he was ignored, he took matters into his own hands at the Russian Grand Prix. In this video Edd Straw explains how Alonso decided ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’, and if it will force a re-think from the FIA over its rules for the opening lap of a Grand Prix

Most laws around the world are, “prescriptive”, in that they say what you cannot do, laws do not say what you can do or, “permissive”. In other words unless there is a law saying you cannot do a particular thing you are free to do that thing. Yes, I know, but that is law 101 for you.

If you don't want people to abuse the rule, may be you make every run-off area a dead end or turn it into gravel. If not, the FIA will have to clamp down on the abusers and penalize them accordingly.
@jossiqua

It would help if they made the blocks more difficult to negotiate, requiring a driver to lift or even brake a little to be able to negotiate them and therefore being unable to gain any advantage from going off track. Alonso managed to find a straight line through them in practice that allowed him to pass through without lifting, therefore not losing much, if any time by going off track.

I don't understand the difference of gaining a lasting advantage on the first lap differing from lap 19 or lap 55 of a race makes no sense to me! I've been watching this sport now for 20 plus years and only recently became confused on track limits! Why are they only applied at certain turns instead of all turns! It should be something that is applied on every turn, every lap! Instead of 3 chances on a certain turn, you get 5-6 chances throughout the entirety of the race then enforce a penalty after that! I agree with what Alonzo is doing here in principle and practice obviously I'm not a fan of it. But I get a very similar vibe to what baseball and the United States was just facing with foreign substances and pictures. You had a pitcher complaining openly on social media and bringing to the attention to MLB officials with no foreseeable change in the way they were enforcing foreign substances that pitcher decided if he can't beat them he would join them and ironically became the pitcher that eyes were most on by the MLB officials!

@emilchandran546
@emilchandran546 2 года назад
The first lap thing is because of the high concentration of cars on the track. I thought this was obvious. Turn two on the first lap you have three or four cars all trying to squeeze through. Also, you have heavy fuel loads and cold tyres. It doesn’t take a lot of thought to figure out why the first lap of any GP is special. Look at contact between two cars. How often does this occur on the first lap compared to all other laps combined? Then look at cars exceeding track limits or being forced wide. Again, it tends to happen a lot on the first lap. This is why the first lap is treated differently. Going off you’re treated more leniently, crashes are more likely to be racing incidents. I think this is fair enough.

@philipbarton3456

@@stemartin6671 Gravel traps are awesome, but I cant imagine them wanting to bring them back, one of the biggest problems is once a driver goes off track (as they inevitably will) the momentum they carry mixed with the aerodynamics of the car brings gravel and stuff on the track. Which leads to Safety Cars or VSCs at minimum affecting the race as a whole. Its a weird juggle the FIA seems to have a hard time settling on. And will probably get worse as cars begin to mess with the limit of ground affect again. Plus there is the fact on some tracks its near impossible because the tracks have multiple configurations (Bahrain for example) that keep gravel traps from being implemented. Which is necessary for most F1 tracks because they need to have different formats to accommodate for different series to keep their tracks open. The only track that has come up with a good solution for this is Paul Richard in France, but that is also a very expensive solution.

Of course the corner could be changed with barriers erected to give the sudden penalty, but that really would screw the race. There is a need to have an escape route on the first corners at some tracks particularly where there is a longish run to it, perhaps the slalom needs to be redesigned to slow the cars down with penalties if they hit the bollards.
