I've fought with people for so long now about back pressure, "small motors need back pressure, I put a bigger exhaust and killed my low end", but they don't understand that going to a bigger exhaust lowers velocity and increases back pressure.... I love your guys video!!!

Wouldn't a big pipe possibly reduce the efficiency of the scavenging effect and not increase back pressure.

A big pipe does not increase backpressure, but it does increase reversion and slow down exhaust gas velocity, which will rob power, the same as backpressure robs power. KP

Gale Banks is brilliant! Been following him since the very early 2000’s when my dad got a 2001 duramax. I think people say you need back pressure because often when they’ve taken away back pressure and saw a power decrease and don’t realize you’ve lost the velocity

Please make a Thunder Torque Insert specifically for the Rinehart bagger slip-ons. Ones that can be installed in the typically thick black exhaust tips. Your current models have threaded lengths too short to go all the way through the Rinehart exhaust tips. LOTS of those slipons out there! I have TTI’s on my two Dynas with D&D 2 into 1 pipes, and on my Low Rider ST with Rinehart twin slipons. They make a night and day difference to the low end torque.

Sooo, is having a completely straight pipe ie. no baffles or cats and putting on a TTI the best? Secondly is gutting a stock pipe (removing baffles & cat) and adding TTI. Just as good as getting an aftermarket slip on and adding a TTI? *side note.. I think that people have been using “back pressure” in the place of reversion. And confused the masses…
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 5 месяцев назад
It depends on which aftermarket exhaust. The gutted OEM slip-ons supplemented with the TTI are better than most aftermarket slip ons alone... But keep in mind aftermarket slip ons can be equipped with the TTI as well. Reversion is Fresh air and spent exhaust gasses reverting back into the exhaust becoming a detrimental to exhaust scavenging. I agree with people mis-using the term but I think most are considering "backpressure" as bottle necking the gasses with a baffle. What you want is an open exhaust that you can see straight through with the TTI installed 1-2 inches into the exhaust. You will get the best performance this way. Here is a video on choosing the right exhaust that you may find useful - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H681dl2X_f4.html And here is a LINK to a written report on setting up exhaust for best performance- www.dkcustomproducts.com/harley-exhaust-myths-and-facts.htm Please feel free to contact us with any questions; support@dkcustomproducts.com 662-252-8828 Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB

I’ve worked in power plants for 25 years and we have back pressure regulators in air and water systems. You have to understand the purpose of back pressure. I’ve tried explaining it to different people when they say their bike needs back pressure. You need to reduce reversion and increase exhaust velocity. Some people just don’t grasp it. They repeat what they’ve heard and can’t explain why.

It’s amazing how many things people believe just because they heard it from somewhere, especially the “engines need back pressure” myth. Cmon people, use that mushy thing between your ears and think about it for a second: How does pressure going against what the engine is trying to pump out make the engine run stronger? It doesn’t.

I was one who was part of this myth for years. I think maybe what happened, whether it matters or not, is back pressure was something we dummies could "understand". Reversion on the other hand, was something we didn't understand and it was dropped from our vocabulary. But reversion is actually 1/2 of the formula, for the problem being discussed. And not understanding reversion is like trying to bake a cake without an oven.

If you put a nozzle on your hose it will increase the velocity of the water leaving the nozzle, but it will not fill a bucket quicker. A hose without a nozzle will fill the bucket quicker. It's a restriction so how is increasing the velocity, but decreasing the mass flow help exhaust gasses move out of the cylinder faster?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 месяца назад
The unique & patented design of the TTI's increase exhaust gas velocity speed with very little restriction. This increase in speed, results in an increase in volume, and also encourages scavenging. This results in a better fill charge on the intake stroke, which results in a stronger combustion stroke, which results in more Torque. Taking the baffles out or running open free flowing exhaust eliminates back pressure (restriction), but then you have reversion. That is where the TTI's come in and reduce reversion and speed up the exhaust gas velocity bringing back the torque. This video explains this subject very well - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pr6z00gL5Yg.html Here is a written report where you can see pictures of how exhaust gases flow and where the TTI's come into play with preventing reversion that you may find helpful - www.dkcustomproducts.com/harley-exhaust-myths-and-facts.htm Here is the full video to this short that you may also find interesting - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P5s8YKEb0gE.html Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB

I had catless head pipes and tab zombies on my 124. Even with a really good tuner the thing rode like ass under 3k. Dude had to throw tons of fuel at it under 3k bc the exhaust kept scavenging all the fuel out. Put in those medium baffles and instantly rode better and got way more butt dyno tq 2-3k and didn’t want to stall out if ya dropped under 2k when setting off. He retuned it and was getting like 10lb feet more in that 2-3k range. Now I got 130tq from like 2k .. smooth rise to 140 aroind 4k and stays over 130 til 5500. I didn’t lose any Hp tho. So gobs more tq under 3500 And no loss of Hp I’m sure the term back pressure is being used incorrectly.

I personally know reversion is a major issue with these bikes. Took the car out, used NH slip ons (horrible for torque or tuning) The reversion caused popping, killed the low end performance of my bike. I used a Big City Baffle and it completely stopped the popping and gave back to low end torque lost.

So if I remove the cat converter it should be a positive thing?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 5 месяцев назад
Removing just the cat will make no perceptible difference in power, at any RPM. You might see 1-3% difference on the dyno, but you are not going to feel it in everyday riding. Removing the restrictive OEM mufflers (Slip-ons) will make a very significant difference, and is an entirely different subject than the catalytic converter. I really don't understand much of this at all, and now I'm wondering if the fishtail exhaust came about when someone was going nuts trying to figure out this back pressure thing, so they smashed the ends of their pipes to see what would happen. I just don't know.

That is because backpressure is bad for power. Backpressure is a power robber. It, literally, makes the engine work just to get the exhaust out. The best power is to have the same size pipe as the headers, all the way to the back of the bike. Of course, most folks don't like that look, so they give up a little power to have the larger diameter slip-ons. KP

OK. Trying to walk the knowledge mine field here. I have a 2024 Ford Super Duty ordered with the 7.3L gas. If I cut the exhaust just behind the catalytic converter and turn the tail pipe out the side in front of the rear wheel (like a NASCAR exhaust), wouldn't this increase performance? It's getting the exhaust out quicker. But, if I do this, do I upset the reversion engineering that is designed into the system? If so, can I correct this on my own with a simple "lollipop" baffle? Also, I now am reducing the length of the total exhaust pipe, so is there less of a column of exhaust moving out the exhaust (scavenging)? Also, if I modify the exhaust in this fashion, would it mess with the MAF sensor or ECM in a negative way?

It was like it woke up from a Sunday slumber. I am wondering now if a set of these you’re talking about here in those shorties would get those eyelids up a little more?? I know your discs are designed for the longer pipes but curiosity is calling…?

We have done quite a few tests on torque cones and have never seen any measurable benefit from them. Here is a video explaining how reversion works that you may find interesting/useful (and it is not just traveling along the outer shell) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pr6z00gL5Yg.html The TTI are a universal item that will increase the exhaust gas velocity of any V Twin exhaust system... Long or short We have dyno charts showing the significant gains of low and midrange torque when using the TTI's. You can see some of them at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/thunder-torque-inserts-118-model-family-dk-tti-118.htm Thank you for commenting! 👍MB

It is unfair to use the term, "U can't fix stupid". But sometimes unfairness is applicable. Don't argue about it, juts put a ThunderTorque insert and wave goodbye after the light.

What if you are more concerned with the amount of torque and a longer flatter torque curve than simply a HP number.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Месяц назад
Reversion and back pressure kills torque... If you prioritize low-mid range power, those things must be addressed. Beyond 5,252 RPM is when HP is measured at at those RPMs things like reversion, backpressure, and exhaust gas velocity are not as much of an issue. @@DKCustomProducts I was just curious. I do a lot of off roading and my machine has a V-Twin. I've seen on Dyno where they lose low and mid range torque but read higher HP with a more open exhaust, but just because the HP and TQ is higher the range moves to high to utilize your low end, and with more low and mid range (more broad tq range with a more tame exhaust. Kinda like a Harley. I'll be sure to read the article as well. Thank you.

@@DKCustomProducts I get what the article says. I forgot to type a line or so. More the difference between shorter true dual drag pipes vs 2 into 1 exhaust difference in braid low and high end torque of the 2 into 1 than the drag pipes which have more TQ and HP but at a more concentrated higher rpm. The 2 into 1 still has decent high rpm power as well. Is that because of the scavenging effect? That's what I run is a custom 2 into 1 on mine.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Месяц назад
Yes, a good 2-1 pipe will have better scavenging, which is good for power thru out the RPM band, including high RPM. 2-1 exhaust still has a reversion challenge and will benefit in the low and mid range from the TTI's. Thanks for commenting! KP

You guys don't understand exhaust design.. What Banks says is about an exhaust system that is 3 to 5 times longer than harley exhaust. It's not the same design. Read Phillip Smiths 1968 book on exhaust design.. What do you think thunder tq inserts do?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 5 месяцев назад
We do understand enough that we have a Patent on a design that reduces reversion, speeding up exhaust gas velocity, resulting in a better combustion chamber fill, which results in cooler IAT, more power, and better economy. guys I realise you're trying to educate but, instead of focusing on a single part of a "system", why not talk about "the package". So many shops are publishing dyno graphs that most discussions on this or that are moot. Now it's easy to predict exactly what your torque curve will look like with: this cam, that intake, the other exhaust, this big-bore, etc. It's all available and seems to be repeatable. Cheers.

We do have other videos that talk about more than one subject. Some subjects need to be talked about singularly as it makes it easier to understand! So if you take out the catalytic converter you should get better power
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 5 месяцев назад
Removing the cat will make no perceptible difference in power, at any RPM. You might see 1-3% difference on the dyno, but you are not going to feel it in everyday riding. Removing the restrictive OEM mufflers (Slip-ons) will make a very significant difference, and is an entirely different subject than the catalytic converter. Here is a video on how to get the most out of an aftermarket (free-flowing) exhaust- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pr6z00gL5Yg.html And here is a LINK to a written report on setting up exhaust for best performance- www.dkcustomproducts.com/harley-exhaust-myths-and-facts.htm Thank you for commenting! I think this video has a few problems. (1) you have an "i told you so" type message with no data, (2) you refer to an "expert" with no data from him either (in this video) (3) you say you did tests but don't show the data (watch that other video?) and (4) do you have independent review of your data assuming you have data? It would be nice if instead of talking at us, you took a more analytical approach with independently verified results/tests, would go further. This guy is an "expert" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jjPeP_Nn2B4.html and so is this guy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DvMBbojZpII.html , this last guy designs racing exhausts. With all these experts and no interpedently verifiable data, what could you possible expect?

Those are some really good video links you posted. Thank you. In some of our other videos we have some clips from Engineering explained. 👍 Thanks for your advice on making videos. Most engine guys know Banks Power and Gale Banks, and if not, they are easily found with a google search. We cannot put everything in one video....but we have many videos with data and dyno charts and then you can look at the hundreds, if not thousands of comments by Customers using the TTI's with very happy results, hundreds on our website and thousands more of forums. NO, we cannot put all that in one video....it would simply be too long. That is why we reference the data/other videos with links. KP
