A brief history of Ferencvaros, told by James Montague.
The history of the Hungarian club is winding and absorbing. For a long time the biggest club in the country, but faced Nazi rule, faced bankruptcy, was brought back to life by a Yorkshireman, and is in the midst of an “ultra-nationalist reawakening of Hungarian identity” by current President Victor Orban.

Also a great year for hungarian football. CL for Fradi + qualifying for the Euros for the national team. There is also some promising young talents coming up - most notably Dominik Szoboszlai.

@@almoskovac253 Szoboszlai is not from the Hungarian academies, to be honest. He is trained in Austria, at Red Bull Salzburg. He was sent to Austria by his father. That club has already given some stars to the world, such as Sadio Mané.

As I watched this I was very curious, as a Hungarian, what are your thoughts (and other Hungarian fans) on the government pumping money into the team, basically allowing them to win over the other teams in the league?

@@Alfuxne3749 It's not over other teams, because actually all teams in our top divison are in the hand of Fidesz (Orban's party) members. And it is very bad for football. In fact, only this money keep club football alive. So I'm not supporting any club in Hungary anymore and I'm not alone. Of course we love our national team, but what happened to our clubs is bad...

@@Alfuxne3749 its pretty bad they fckd up the whole competition. Like my favorite club Debreceni VSC had a pretty bad season and got relegated and the team was bought in a week after it by the government. And all in all they pumping the money in a bad way, into foreign players, stadiums(while there is barely any player attending normal matches) while they don't invest in youth or develop managers.

@@Alfuxne3749 there are 12 teams in the top division and 11 is owned by an oligarch or local governments. so almost everyone is getting gov money. but there are 3 teams who recevie more than others, Fradi, Vidi (the two most successful Hungarian teams in European tournaments) and Felcsut (Orbán's village)

Wow... That's a Hungarian football legend I'd completely forgot about... I've been thinking lately about Puskas, Kocsis, Czibor, Kubala, Hidegkuti... Albert won a Ballon d'Or, one of the finest to ever master the art of football. What a legend. Thanks for reminding me of him. I remember when Newcastle United played Ferencváros in the UEFA Cup. Never met a fan base like it. Met a fellow (May have past now) who witnessed the golden team and he talked my ear off about how great they were. I was mesmerised. I hope to visit the stadium one day and maybe watch a game

Every team has got money from the government, Ferencváros is the most popular team in Hungary by far, so they've got the best sponsorship deals. Their budget is far lower, than any other teams budget in the Champions League, it's not even the biggest in Hungary. The reason why they are here is the amazing work of Serhiy Rebrov! As far as I remember, the fans loved Craig Short, Bobby Davison was way too arrogant, and the fact doesn't help him, that hungarian players who loved Fradi were driven away even if they went to the club for a contract (some were national team players), they loaned some low quality players from Sheffield Utd instead, even if they promised Champions League before.

@@UpTheOs10 Before the EL, CL succcess Videoton had (all state-owned sponsors, while FTC is mostly sponsored by multinational companies). Obviously Fradi has earned millions of euros in the last two years having success in UEFA competitions.

it isn't though, the same thing is going on, funds coming in through government investment, tax payer's money, and both are reaching the UCL group stages in a long time. But yeah, Fradi at least has history, and weren't formed 8 years ago. Maybe in a couple of years we will see a video about Puskas Akademia :DD that would be a more appropraite, almost perfect comparison!

Orban is not the President of Hungary. The President is a ceremonial position, like the Pres of Germany or Monarch in UK. Orban is prime minister, position identical to that of PM in the UK or Chancellor in Germany - all of whom are heads of executive because their party won the parliamentary election.

As a Millwall supporter, I remember the only time we qualified for Europe back in 2004, we ended up getting drawn against Ferencvaros and managed to draw the first leg but lost the second. I had no idea they got relegated just two years after that.

Újpest is the only club in the first division owned by a foreigner (Belgian) but I wouldn't say they are opposing to the regime because they also benefit from the conisderable amount of money channeled to the football by Orbán (tax money, TV rights etc.) Újpest are the historically biggest rivals of Ferencváros.

To make even more, the owner is a Hungarian of Russian origin, Gabor Kubatov. Kubatov is a Fidesz member and he has a close relationship with Putinist government in Russia, thanks for Kubatov's father root from a Russian family in Karabakh. Recently, Putin's Russia has encouraged its allied billionaires to take over football clubs. I bet Kubatov, like Abramovich (Chelsea), Samsonenko (Vardar) and Savvidis (PAOK), serve Russia's ambitions. Outside they claim they have personal disputes with Putin but inside they share the same cake.

Pushed team by the goverment right now. They have gotten lot of public money. Lot of hungarian people doesn't like Ferencváros becuse of this. Orbán doesn't give money for every team, he gives (our) money for who he likes.(FTC, Videoton,Puskás) Today every team are financed by the goverment except Újpest ( The oldest and one of the biggest club in Hungary).
