I had the opposite reaction to Dan. I thought the movie worked better as a rom com than an action movie. The writing might not be great, but Ryan and Emily together were delightful. For the action scenes, I just thought the car stunts were better done in John Wick 4 and even in Fast And Furious movies. But I did appreciate the end credit behind the scene video. This movie is just okay - mainly because of the 2 leads.

Sad how stunt people are still somehow underappreciated in the industry so it was quite breath of fresh air to see a wonderful fun movie dedicated to the stunt people and the world that they live in. I still don't see why the Oscars should wait so long to add a "Best Stunt" category to their award show
@retloclive9118
@retloclive9118 4 месяца назад
The same reason as always. It's a safety issue. The moment an Oscar is added for "Best Stunt," it's going to turn into a competition to see who can pull off the most dangerous stunt the best.

Stunt actors are the reason why everyone loves the movies
@zenquantum1246

It’s also a question of **how** to add it to the Academy Awards. Stunt performance by its very nature is meant to be hidden from movie viewers - even in the days before CGI. Everyone is supposed to believe the stunt performers and the actors are the same person. Even if your movie has behind-the-scenes footage to share with voters, does it really represent what the stunt people did? And how do you compare that across the nominated movies?
@benzaiten933
@benzaiten933 4 месяца назад
perhaps the Oscars sill want to somehow guard the illusion of the stars actually doing all those difficult and at times dangerous stunts? if the acknowledge stunt work, they'd have to admit it's not all the actors?
@uosdwiSrdewoH
@uosdwiSrdewoH 4 месяца назад
@@retloclive9118 Stunt performers are professionals. They aren't adrenaline junkies. It's not worth winning the award if they receive it posthumously. It's more likely they just don't know how to gauge what makes one stunt better than another coupled with the fact that they're probably trying to cling to the idea that stunts should be seamless and knowing it's a stunt performer will ruin the magic even though most moviegoers surely realise it's a given that actors can't do everything.

Teresa Palmer being in this movie was quite of a surprise too for me (sad that Dan didn't talk a little bit about her character). Her first scene with Gosling was pretty incredible and quite hilarious too, not enough people talked about how good she is as an actress. She's heavily underrated for my money

My wife and I saw fall guy Friday night. We laughed quite often and liked the chemistry between the 2 main characters. I thought it was fun and fine, and we hooked with each other in the parking lot after about a couple of lines in the movie that made us laugh the most. My wife liked it so much that she said it's on the "buy list". I hope it gets some love from the audience.

I saw this last Friday. It's carried so much by Gosling's natural charm. He's able to save so much dialogue that could have been cringy from anyone else. I like Hannah Waddingham usually but I thought she, and her terrible wig, were awful here. It's not all on her though, her character is also very poorly written. Blunt's director is underwritten as well.

Having just seen The Fall Guy in Australia I'm thankful for this review to clarify what I was thinking because from the start something felt a little off and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. At one point I thought it was kind of heightened reality where things were supposed to feel a bit off just to the point where you realise you're watching a movie in a way. It didn't make much sense to me either when I thought it. I almost wish they'd found a way to show the stunts in the movie being done within the main movie instead of just in the credits. I don't know how that would've worked. Slight spoilers ahead. There were a lot of odd moments throughout this movie to the point I'm kind of amazed I liked it as much as I did. It did pull me out of the movie when they did the fire stunt over and over and I haven't been on a film set. They have already mentioned that the movie needs to go off without a hitch as well as the fact that they can't afford certain things so Blunt's director seems even more wasteful of both time and resources. Given how precious Sydney is about the Harbour Bridge it was amazing to see they did that for real. Though the editing was curious. I think it ultimately worked but I felt a bit cheated when the cross cutting that was clearly started in real time ended up not being so. The whole thing with Tom Ryder was very convoluted and it also meant Aaron Taylor Johnson needed to be off screen for way too much time because I needed more of him. Not sure I'll head back to the cinema but I do really want to see it again and hopefully it's home release comes with an extensive behind the scenes look at the incredible stunts.

I saw this Wednesday night at the early access screening in Imax back to back with Boy Kills World and had a blast. This film knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to do anything more. I generally agree with your assessment of the movie. It was really fun, although I'd built up my expectations to be higher than what it delivered, but the great stunt work mostly made up for any bumps elsewhere along the way. It was fun seeing it in Burbank because a lot of the jokes about working on set really landed. The joke about meal breaks got one of the biggest laughs in the whole movie, whereas I bet it didn't even register in most places outside LA.

i watched the movie and came out annoyed. Hollywood has to stop writing the over quippy dialogue. It is beyond ridiculous to have every single character speak so strangely. And for comedy to work with non comedians, we need a straight man to ground use. Everyone cannot be saying stupid lines. I wish the relationship between Emily and Ryan’s character had real substance. It didn’t feel real. I cringed every time to made him slam his BACK into that rock. He broke his fricking back lady!!!! You watched it happen and you repeatedly slammed him into a rock? The movie should have leaned into a 80s movie style. The action was fantastic, the ridiculous banter spoiled it for me. Also no one in my theater laughed at all. Calling all writers…

** Copy and pasted from my post on the Breakfast all day out of theatre reactions** - I watched this last night here. It's so boring and the movie is mid. The big action sequence with the garbage truck kept cutting to innane dialogue at the karaoke lounge and bad karoake and sapped all tension from the action sequence. The movie was paced terribly in the first hour and the two leads have no chemistry. Even the bathtub scene, they kept cutting back to bad dialogue. The beach fire scene is similiarly more repetitive charmless dialogue. Everytime the movie cut to emily talking to ryan gosling... i was comatose and felt my soul leaving my body. 4/10 * it doesnt help that I'm from Sydney and the magical teleportation between various suburbs and geography is just extreme cognitive whiplash. AND.. i know its a movie, but Australia = NO guns. The idea that they're using those assault weapons out in the public and police not being aware? Sure....

I had the polar opposite experience, I loved the comedy and the dialogue, but felt that the action could have been more effective. Even though the stunts were mostly practical, in the movie those practical stunts seemed to disappear due to heavy CGI. That was intentional, but not to my personal taste. Another problem was the sound design. Everything was loud, without any dynamic range, which also reduced the impact of most of the action. Having said all that, I totally agree with the it`s good rating, but for totally different reasons.

Agreed. When I saw the trailers I thought. Oh okay. So these are stunts in the movie within the movie. So they have exaggerated the effects to differentiate the nested films aspect. But no. They just covered over the hard work of all the stunt team with a shiny film of visual effects. I genuinely wondered why this film about a stunt man didn't have any actual stunts until they showed them all in the credits. The mission impossible movies do the same thing. Film a stunt for real then make it look fake in post.

@@franciscopozole That was also my feeling. I thought the added layers etc detracted from what could have been a cool and simple action flick. Some of the set pieces were good and Blunt/Gosling chemistry was great.

3:32 I think I know the meta scene Dan referred to that lasted too long. But I laughed at the end of that sequence when Ryan Goslin's character said "we're getting hung up in exposition" - which made me feel it was definitely a meta joke on exposition in action movies. I'm assuming on rewatches it will get over-played and get annoying... But I'm the moment it made me smile.

Thanks for the review Dan! Based on Leitch's past few films, your review makes sense. I'm planning to see it tomorrow.

This was average at best. Blunt needs to pick better movies. After seeing this and Oppenheimer, I would still say her best movie is Looper.

I liked it. I feel the same way about the humor. It was kind of a spaghetti against the wall situation. Stephanie Hsu is always amusing.

Hello Dan, great review, as usual, I must say the Fall Guy is not for me. I saw it last Friday in my local theater here in Spain but it was disappointing, I enjoyed the first half more than the rest of the movie, Blunt and Gosling are wasted talent in this movie , as you rightly mentioned. They try to make it all very funny , but , alas, it is not, at least for me. Thank you Dan. Keep up the great job.

I am buying a ticket because people coming out of the theatre are posting they really love it. It is an unapologetic popcorn blast. You are overthinking it.

I thought the action and prod values were great but against popular opininion I didn't really feel the romance. It felt a bit forced and not natural. The movie didn't really flow that well either but that was probably intentional for effect. It was a very cool movie, probably the best action/comedy I've seen since Deadpool, just the somewhat contrived romance didn't do it for me but that was not a dealbreaker

I have only seen the trailer, but i have to agree, the dialogue between the two leads just isn't that funny. Love the actors, but sadly this will be a pass.

Yeah. He did not ghost her. He broke his back on the job and his natural mental healing process is self seclusion, possibly shutting down *He is Alowed to heal as he sees fit.* It was not about her. Her trying/wanting to make so, is something to talk to her terapist about. Not in anyway appropriate to punish him about in any way. Frankly that stupid sceen took me out of the movie and made me disappointed he still wanted *and* got back with her.

accurate review! thought they could’ve used the extra time featuring the key stunt persons, especially those who took the hits and rolls for the stars.

While the script may be problematic, the greater problem is that David Leitch is not good at balancing tone in comedy and basic storytelling mechanics. Every movie he's made since "co-directing John Wick" has been inferior to the John Wick sequels directed by Chad Stahelski. Let's run 'em down: Atomic Blonde - Very good except for having one too many twists at the end - seriously, drop any one of them and it's a better movie; having them all trips it up - and the fatal flaw of telling the story as flashbacks so there's never any tension because we know she survives. (Steven Soderbergh made the same mistake with Haywire.) Deadpool 2 - The humor too often felt forced and mean compared to the original. Drags on too long. F&F Hobbs & Shaw - More forced humor as it makes the fundamental mistake of a buddy action movie in having both be the funny guy. 48 Hours or Lethal Weapon had odd couple pairings, one wild man, one straight man; H&S had both Rock & Statham as the laughs then stopped everything dead for Ryan Reynolds & Kevin Hart cameos. Bullet Train - More tedious blathering "humor" with Brian Tyree Henry's endless nattering on about what Thomas the Tank Engine character various people represent. Who talks like this? Leitch can stage and execute action like a boss, but when it comes to telling a story or doing comedy - which is an art that comedy directors often struggle with (looking at you, John Landis) - he messes it up more than not.

Thank you. Do the trailers contain all the good jokes? Dan, you kid. In the 70s, McCloud was a cowboy detective dropped in NYC. It was a hit and ran for six years. It was part of NBC' s Mystery Movie that gave us Columbo, McMillan and Wife, and Quincy.

Just go see the movie for yourself. It was fun, and had great stunts and Ryan Gosling was great to look at throughout the movie. My husband thought it was a tad corny, be he did enjoy it. So, I never listen to "critics," I go watch instead. Most movies that I really enjoyed got torn up by the so-called critics, and they were actually good movies. They are MOVIES, you know?? If you haven't seen, "The Gray Man," with Ryan, it's a definite MUST SEE. I'm hoping for a sequel....

Interestingly, I had the exact opposite reaction... I thought it was better at the romance than it was at the action (though it did have some amazing action), and what I think worked for me most of all was the sincerity of the characters. The banter may have fallen flat at times, but the film was its best when Gosling and Blunt were being sincere and working together, and so I really felt the chemistry between the two characters. It does take a bit long to get going, but I ultimately had a blast...
