This is where I discovered the fall. My gf of the time was watching Corduroy in the jazz tent, f this I thought, walked out to get a beer, and the fall was on the main stage. I was transfixed.

Corduroy!!!🤮🤮🤮 Er sorry, you're not still together, are you? 'Girlfriend at the time' could possibly mean 'now wife', lol. Sorry.

Short-lived line-up of MES, Brix, Craig, Steve, Simon, Karl and Julia (with Lucy Rimmer), between "Cerebral Caustic" and "The Light User Syndrome". Julia had replaced Dave Bush in March; Craig would only last another three months.

Thanks; there's a Phoenix Festival LP out; can't remeber if it's '94 or '95, though.

I watch footage like this, and I have to wonder if Steve Hanley's memories aren't entirely comprised of images of stage floors interweaving with and blurring into each other. Maybe occasionally he gave himself a treat and looked up a little at the drum riser, but if those occasions pierced their way into his memory, only he can say.

@@Sr19769p First time I saw them was supporting The Magic Band in 2004 at The Royal Festival Hall! Then I saw then in, iirc, 2009 at this swish Lahndaan "Under The Bridge" club, which was the better gig, The Magic Band were so fucking good when they had the French/Whalley/Lucas/Boston/Williams line-up. Transcendental gig.

@@Sr19769p Are you talking about The Fall? Yeah, I do count myself lucky; I was getting back into record collecting and picking up bits and bobs that I'd sold; I started my collecting up again after selling the last one for reasons. Started a month or two before the "lockdown", got a 100 and seven records, not counting most of my 7"s, I'm lucky 'cause my local shop has a damn good Fall section. I picked up the Cerebral Caustic and [Austerbaijarbo] Iceland 1983 RSD releases in August, both great and the Iceland LP is incredible and stunningly beautiful--a 180gm amorphous mixture of bright yellow and orange wax--the way the write-up was worded made me think one LP was yellow, the other orange but they're this gorgeous mix; and Cerebral caustic was officially listed as : "bonkers spatter vinyl" on 180gm, remastered on Demon (the Iceland LP is on Cherry Red Fall Sound Archive). I picked up a bunch of EP's, Frenx Experiment and a sealed copy of Sub-Lingual Tablet from my local record shop, not to mention E-Bay and Discogs (the Dragnet and Hex reissues/remasters are fantastic and Hex sounds amazing over four sides of vinyl); I got the Fall Sound Archive blue-on-red spatter double which sounds great and the double whisky marbled vinyl Room To Live, as well as all the old classics. Bought a German 1986 reissue of Perverted By Language on white vinyl for 40 quid, sleeve and LP were literally mint and it sounds fantastic after, what, 36 fucking years!?!?! Apparently they did a series of reissues on white wax, Line records...you ever see one in good nick pick it up. So I hit 30 Fall LP's/EP's the other day with the A sides 19841988 collection, surprised to find it on white vinyl too...I got a good few post 2000 LP's and a couple of real "grails" with Fall Heads Roll and the baby Blue The Real New Fall Lp, both US pressings from Narnack, Real New Fall is incredible, especially the B and C sides. That banging, droney, repetitious post-Velvets, post-Can sheer fucking exquisite noise...Blindness, man....beautiful.

I fucking love "Free Range", "Don't Call Me Darling", "Bill Is Dead and "Feeling Numb". Fucking great gig I'll probably get the LP of this set, now! There's a real tense poignancy about him singing a song that is probably about Brix, whilst she's on stage with him: " these are the best times of my life/These are the greatest times of my life..." It could be about any of his girlfriends, or it could be a "character"--but in my "headcanon"--it's about that wonderful honeymoon period with M.E.S' new wife at the time. I see Cherry Red are re-releasing a double-LP set of Imperial Wax Solvent, first disc is the original LP, second one is an unused version with three tracks I haven't heard, nor heard of. Oh and it's on "bonkers spattered vinyl". I have the translucent yellow Cherry Red RSD reissue too but fuck it it's The Fall, and one of their absolute best post-2000 LP's! Cheers for the upload!!!

It's about Saffron Prior, his wife after Brix :)
@vollsticks
@vollsticks 2 года назад
@@jesseemullen I don't think we'll ever know for sure, although that was the wife I was referring to in the part where I wrote about "my headcanon"--I should've been clearer, sorry!--I wasn't actually referring to Brix, but Saffron Prior! But as I said, I don't think we'll ever know and it could be about either of them, both of them, or neither! I know James Brown (NME journo/Loaded guy/erstwhile Viz publisher) said "it was about his new girlfriend at the time" which could well be Prior, or it could have been the dancer from The Michael Clarke Company he was having an affair with (allegedly) towards the end of his marriage to Brix.

Pretty good performance considering how miserable it was being in the group at the time , and they had just released their worst album to date (Cerebral Caustic). It's like Mark was trying to resurrect the classic eighties personnel to regain some of the Fall magic and this is its last hurrah .

I always thought CC would've been better if it had a little more time in the oven. And if they used a producer who didn't have that flat, muddy sound that Mike Bennett gave it. Grant Showbiz would've been great for the material - if it had the production sound of The Real New Fall LP, it would've been a classic.
