MES and Brix had just split up (on 4 Jan 1989). Brix was still technically a member of The Fall, and a seat had been booked on the plane for her to fly to Germany with the group for this gig. "Brix dreaded the trip, and on the day she simply bypassed the airport and disappeared to a luxury hotel in Sussex." (Simon Ford, Hip Priest p.186; cf Brix RiseFallRise pp.244-252, and Steve Hanley Big Midweek p.276). Explains a lot about the atmosphere of this gig.
Brix having split with MES and left The Fall, her guitar tech Phil Ames stands in for her here - his first and only Fall gig. The bored audience may be down to Phillip Boa also appearing on this show and they may be waiting for him 👍💖
