The Fall of Supernatural (Why to Quit a Fandom)

Involvement in fandom should, fundamentally, be fun. For many of us, fandom feels very important because it makes up a large chunk of our leisure and social time. But fandoms are not activism and fandoms are not your whole identity, and fandoms are not your job, and fandoms should be FUN. So, as you’ll see, for me? You quit a fandom when it isn’t fun anymore.
So let's dig in to how Supernatural stopped being fun. (And Doctor Who...and Harry Potter.)

My biggest problem with supernatural is it lost the horror element , it’s no longer scary or even emotional. Not to mention the stakes are gone .
@plaguedoctor4519

100% agree. It was those episodic episodes in the first season that got me into the show, they had a horror element, if not completely scary, the tension and atmosphere that it had made me fall in love with the show. The episodic episodes that fans love to hate now, that was my introduction and what got me into this show to begin with lol

This is why I have such respect when it comes to Breaking Bad. The show could’ve gone on longer as it was immensely popular, BUT they ended it while they were ahead and it’s better for it. Sure, I would’ve loved more adventures with Jesse or Walt, but they ended it in a satisfying way instead of just milking it for what it’s worth.

1:56 I love all I’ve seen of Supernatural but I, amongst many other fans, will agree Classic Supernatural is probably some of the BEST parts of the show. It has all the original writers etc. It created the general feel as well as the overarching plot feel. And everything. There was so much text and subtext with things like Destiel, there was a lot of information to not only digest it to analyze and think about. There were episodes that started discussions on mending relationships with lifelong abusers. It was amazing. IS amazing. I still fucking love every Supernatural episode I’ve ever seen, but Classic felt like you could watch any part of it whatsoever without being lost.

The part where you said " You only get so much free time in your day, in your week, in your life" really got to me. Sometimes I feel like what i'm doing is more than a chore or militar duty than a pleasure "i've to binge watch all this show even if i don't feel like doing it" sort fo thing.

I absolutely get that feeling, especially when I fall behind on a show. It's weird to feel so obligated to kep up with something when it should just be fun
@0ctopusComp1etely
@0ctopusComp1etely 6 лет назад
It's really, reeeally hard, but it is actually possible to just... give up. It might be one comment you read somewhere. It might be an epiphany from an internal source. Or maybe it's just something you decide to do one day. But eventually, I hope you realize that a lot of the things we (or at least I) feel obligated to watch/ read/ keep up with, just aren't worth worrying over. Entertainment is meant to be fun. So find things you like and continue to consume them. There's NOTHING WRONG with enjoying yourself. But DON'T feel required to keep up with everything you ever pick up. There are other avenues of entertainment that will be just as fulfilling if you can find them, and then are almost limitless things more productive you could be doing. Don't. Sweat it.

I agree with you on all of this. I loved the first five seasons of supernatural, but after that it just seemed like a cash grab. Like they know people are going to watch it anyways so why need to try? In my experience the best TV shows and such have an ending. The writers go in with something in mind and then work to reach that satisfying point. The season five finale for Supernatural was supposed to be the end for the show because the writers didn’t think that it was going to be picked up for another season. Since that wasn’t the case they had to struggle to find something to do.

I thought about getting out of supernatural several times. As someone who took the other road and ended up watching every episode through the finale of season 13 let me just say that I feel you made the better choice. I wish I had stopped watching before the trials in season eight. These things are subjective, but it really has been more bad than good. The way season 13 ended is like an insult to swan song.

Russell whisenant I completly agree plus what they did with a certain character (his name starts with G) after one of the most heroic deaths in the whole show was just insulting. Sure he at least got some great new episodes but still. I actually feel like everything on this show is dead and someone is puppetering with the corpses. And what they were doing with Lucifer's character in this whole season was already insulting on it's own. Like he was one if not the greates villian on the show before and now they made him inro a clown.

So glad I watched all of spn without being involved with the fandom. I feel like not being super involved with the fans of the show increased my enjoyment of the show. Yeah the show’s writing quality went down past season 5, but a handful episodes were still good in my opinion during the middle seasons, and then the writing sort of picked up again during the later seasons. Only join a fandom if u have the time and truly believe it is smothering that will make watching the show much more fun. The opinion of others shouldn’t influence your thoughts and ideas of a show. Just do what u love without it being a chore.

I find that I never fully quit a fandom. I just distance myself like all hell from the parts I dislike and create a bubble for all the stuff I do. This goes ESPECIALLY for HP. Sure, I'll sometimes get into discourse about the bad stuff, but the fact of matter is I am working two jobs full time right now, so I have to be really careful with what I do with what free time I do have, just like you said. The fact is most of the time I just want to indulge in all of the pretty fan art and cool headcanons rather than worry about what garbage stuff the creators did this time...but Rowling has lost her status as my favorite author for sure.

Well... I have to say my love for a show or a movie doesn't dependt on the fandom. In fact I don't interact with fandoms anymore for...years? because the fandoms ruined the shows or movie for me so I rather quit the fandoms instead of the shows and enjoy them for myself. Maybe I am to old... Exspecial for some of the manga and anime fandoms, but I learned I am better off without some crazy fandoms who just make me angry or leave me confused... (Like the yuri on ice and the killing stalking case...) I like supernatural for what it is. A nice show to entertain me. I never hyped it as much as other people nor did I see the queerbaiting regarding dean and cas. But I stil enjoy the show. And I enjoy fantastic beasts. J.k. rowling did a few stupid things in the past but even if i dislike her i can't disliked the things i grew up with. The thing with johnny depp...well. the whole story with his wife was somehow strange so I will see if he can do a good grindelwald or if he just plays another 'johnny depp role'. So that is my conclusion. F*** the fandoms- love the show/movie. Interact with people if you like them... But that's all.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Some fandoms can be very aggressive. I feel like with the Supernatural fandom all people care about is Dean and Cas. Like all I see is Destiel, everywhere. With other fandoms, it makes it more fun. Usually with books the fandom makes it more fun for me. I usually stay away from the fandoms of TV shows, as they tend to be a bit aggressive (not all, just some). And yes, anime/manga fandoms are borderline insane, if not already insane (once again, not all, just some).

Not so much "fall through" as much as Warner made a bad decision and decided to jump on the streaming platform trend. Julia S If you base watching a television series on the fandom then what’s the point on watching TV at all?
@julias4183
@julias4183 6 лет назад
the brave bartender I love a ton of shows and television in general, and more often than not the fanbase has absolutely no effect on me. But I was already somewhat falling off SPN anyway (the show was never my first choice, and I just always found myself being drawn to other shows), but I couldn’t watch anymore after some fans blatant disregard for the actors feelings. After Jared started his campaign for mental illness (a beautiful idea that I think is so important) fans started getting very intense at events. I saw a girl give Jared her razors she used to cut herself with, mind you he is a chronically depressed man. He had to leave and take a break from signing after that. That is so beyond awful. Not to mention fans sexually harassing them during photo ops (grabbing them, kissing them, feeling them sexually WITHOUT permission), attacking their wives on social media, and making them intensely uncomfortable during panels by asking inappropriate questions. Of course if that weren’t enough, I hate creation entertainment (who practically own the show and do own the rights to the actors). They drive up prices sky high to their events, I’m talking 1500 dollars for a weekend “gold” ticket when at their other events it’s 2, maybe 300 dollars because they know the fans will pay it. It was 600 dollars for a 5 maybe 10 second photo op with Jared or Jensen this year. I can’t support that company, they exploit the hell out of the fans. Other than that though, I just got tired of seeing the same story every season and the lack of suspense. It’s always the same “there is a bigger, more bad villain” and the boys end up winning but with a major consequence. There isn’t any suspense because people die and come back time after time after time. It just got stale. I still love and respect the majority of the fans, the actors, and all the hard work that goes into the show. I love the sillier episodes and when I know they are coming on (through my mother who does still avidly watch) I watch them with her. Hopefully my explanation as to why I can’t watch it anymore makes sense.

Claudia Pacheco Tovar I agree there are absolutely great fans - I know many, but the ones who are bad are REALLY bad. I’ve seen some deplorable things (see other reply), and I just can’t surround myself with it anymore. It made me feel icky I guess? Like I was part of something that I couldn’t morally allow myself to be, it was bad for my mental health and I’ve found myself much baller having left. Too much infighting, too many people acting inappropriately towards the actors. If you can still enjoy the show I am so glad, I just can’t find enjoyment watching anymore.

I loved Supernatural back in the day, I was never deep into the fandom of it but I adored the show and still rewatch the first five sesasons. I kept watching seasons 6-8 or so because I felt that i couldn't keep up with what was happening. I missed the different ghosts and monsters but the show was just focussed on the war between heaven and hell or whatever was happening. I watched the crossover episode with Scooby Doo and they clearly left out the weirdly complicated stuff from the latest seasons so that people who stopped watching in season 6-8 could understand

I relate to all of this too much. I couldn't get past the 7th season of supernatural or even start with Clara in Doctor who. I think there are certain shows that have a natural ending that feels like a good time to stop and I will watch shows to that point and never really get back into it after. I don't think that makes someone any less of a fan.

I disagree about Clara, but agree about Bill... The best thing about the tenth season was the Doctor and the Master's relationship and how it ended (And more than one good idea for the plots of the episodes). Bill was....ok. The best thing that happened to her character was become a cyberman and a part of a omnipresent bean in the end of the season.

I agree on clara, she overstayed her welcome. Also i'd rather had they used victorian age clara instead of modern age clara, vicorian clara had way more personality and initiative (and just was a badass in general) where as i feel modern clara ran after the doctor at first, and later tried to surpass him. I really did enjoy the episode "face the raven" though, it was a good ending to her. (But then they just had to resurrect her, because of course) I disagree on bill though, i found her to be very enjoyable to watch, and a breath of fresh air after clara's reign. I was actually sad to see her go after just one season, i hoped she would've stayed longer

Same. Someone forgot that the companion is supposed to be the audience surrogate. There was little about Clara that the audience could relate to. It was "Oh, look! Isn't she pretty? Isn't she clever? Don't you want to know more about why she keeps popping up?" Umm, no, not really. Clara was a failed attempt to re-create the mystique that River had when she was first introduced. The best thing they did for her character was "face the raven". She finally felt like more than a plot device. Then they ruined it by bringing her back. While I did enjoy Bill, I have to agree that she was a bit bland. I think another season could have really brought out her potential.

I agree with you, when a fandom is no longer fun/you find something that you're more into, then there's no shame in leaving it. I've been in fandoms online since 2006, and man have I gone through different ones. I usually stay active in one for a few years, pick up something new and go back to old ones now and then. I'm going through a period of Doctor Who and Torchwood now (mainly reading fics), and before that I went back to Harry Potter and Pacific Rim for half a year or so. I'm a bit reserved to go into a new fandom these days, especially after seeing the drama in the Star Wars fandom on tumblr.

If Supernatural was on HBO it would be a million times better. Less episodes per season, a larger budget to work with. Show's don't need fan service in an episode if deviates from telling a good story. All the seasons have great potential in telling a good story. It's just been executed poorly with a poor budget.

Usually I quit fandoms not shows. Like with Doctor Who, I loved Steven Moffat, so being on tumblr and loving what he did was not healthy for me, I also received some anon hate for that. So at some point I just watched it without searching other people opinions anymore, when I had to say something about it, I tweeted it. Anyway I'll probably quit DW with the new series, because I don't really care about a female Doctor tbh. (Not saying this on DW because you quit it, I used this series as an example because it was the only one were I was quite active in places like tumblr and forums.)

I´m still somewhat in the fandom and I still love the show. Of course Season 1-5 were amazing but I dont think that everything after S5 is bad...In fact S12 is one of my favorites. (But Season 13 sucked so much.) The fandom however is just strange. I mean there is still some fanart and cool fanfics but the majority of the fandom consists of fans just fangirling or fighting over ships. I also dont like that the SPN fandom isn´t open for discussion and is very ignorant. For many people it´s their favorite show of all time and that´s fine but that doesn´t mean it´s perfect or that there aren´t any other good shows. People have to admit when the writing or a storyline is bad but they just won´t. Supernatural is a very special show and it means a lot to many people, me included. But even I, after obsessing over Supernatural for many years now, realised that the show isn´t that good anymore and adding a new character, Jack, in season 13 didnt help the show at all. But the fandom just loves Jack therefore they also love Season 13 eventhough it was just terrible. Whenever I tried to give my honest opinion about it people where like: "No, Supernatual is the best show ever. Jack is cute and I loves the new season so much." Nobody wants to listen or honestly discuss something so I kinda left the fandom but I still love the show and Im going to watch it till the end just to see how everything plays out , I hope its coming to an end soon, though.

As someone who braved the ship until the finale: you made the right choice. I probably will remain somewhat irked by the ending until I can fully get it to leave my mind. The fandom became trashier than imaginable, the spin-offs were scrapped, except for the atrocious rewrite of the Winchester parents (John and Mary), and now have to live with the final three episodes (plus a few others throughout the years) replaying in my mind whenever I hear about this show or certain actors/concepts even.

People always ask me why Breaking Bad is my favorite show of all time. Was it the award winning acting? The perfectly synched character development? The fantastic writing that knew just how to play with your emotions, make you cringe, cry, and tense up along with the characters? The clear and prominent direction? The beautiful camera work? *Aaron Paul*? None. I would say it is because it ended, and that plays in as a big to my love for it. It knew it’s time and took it. It’s memory sings perfectly into my mind. But that’s not it. Breaking Bad isn’t my favorite show because it ended. It’s my favorite show because it’s smart. Smart writing. I love smart writing. The “never forget about anything” sort of jabs that leave you oblivious to what hides behind the next corner. You don’t know where the story will take you. You don’t know what is going to come back. The point is, the writers knew what they were doing from the beginning, and everything is just SMART. Nothing is random. Nothing is out of the blue. It makes sense and it leaves you with nothing but the word, “Whoa.” Now, let me get this straight. When I say smart writing, I don’t mean that one horrible episode in Season 10 when the girls who are making a “Supernatural Musical” make a call back to Adam as a silly little giggle. (By the way, why is that a joke in this universe? Meta-humor doesn’t work in anything that isn’t Deadpool. Sam and Dean just look like assholes. “Oopses, Adam’s still dead.” Right. Why don’t you make your characters look even worse. I get why Adam is in hell. It was the...necessary sacrifice, or whatever. The fact that he’s still there is a chuckle for the viewers. Sam and Dean do not live in viewer land. In fact, the fact that Adam is NEVER mentioned again before this ((besides Season 6)) and the lack of direction truly expresses just how serious they were about ending this shit at Season 5. Eric left, god dammit. Move on to another project.) But that’s just me getting off on a tangent. Let me give you an example of what I mean by smart. Let’s take a look at Arrested Development. This is one of my favorite television shows, and honestly a show I think possesses some of the smartest writing I’ve ever seen. Now, it’s not the best example of a show that hasn’t jumped the shark. Though it hasn’t gone to the extent of Supernatural, and the new “revamp” still has it’s hilarious moments, Arrested Development hasn’t aged too well. When I discuss smart writing, I’m talking about Seasons 1-3. (I know Season 3 was horribly rushed, but instead of 22 episodes as planned they were cut to 13 because the show wasn’t making enough money. So, unfortunately, the ending felt seriously rushed, but if they’d been given more time I can tell you it would’ve been a much more fluid and satisfying conclusion that we wouldn’t have to fill with this Netflix revamp.) There are multiple instances in the show where the writing just blows you away, but there’s one specific part I want to talk about. Season 2, Episode 11 “Out On A Limb”. More importantly, one scene at the very end of this episode. For context, from Season 1-2 Buster (the youngest son in the Bluth family which the Arrested Development show is written around) is profoundly babied by his mother Lucille and alienated from his other siblings as a 32 year-old who still lives at home. Not only that, but she is seen throughout episodes (much earlier) telling Buster not to go into the ocean and that it’s too dangerous for him. In an act of defiance he joins the army, (but misses the bus) so he can run onto the beach, into the ocean as a one last “screw you, mom” before he leaves. As he does this a man on shore screams, “That seal! Watch out for that seal!” But “that seal” sounds like “Lucille”, so Buster shouts back, “I don’t care about Lucille anymore!” And then a seal bites off his hand. This is smart writing. This is writing that gets you thinking. Did they name “Lucille” Lucille this WHOLE time just to end up at this punchline? Not only that, but throughout Season 1 and early 2 there are hints to what will happen next. Including a scene where Buster ends up across town with the Hispanic woman who cleans his mother’s house (and steals her stuff), and finds his hand chair that he lost. To that he says, “I have one just like that at home. Never thought I’d miss a hand so much.” Remember, this is many many episodes before Buster actually loses his hand. Not to mention it isn’t treated like a crazy punchline for later. It isn’t even really a joke until you think back. In another scene (again) before this episode, Lucille and Buster are taking pictures on the beach, and the seal that bites off Buster’s hand can be seen jumping in the water behind them. But it’s almost accidental that the camera man brushes past it at all. There’s even an earlier scene where Lucille turns on the news (and is surprised by something else) but the reporter also mentions “A seal attack.” Though, to top it all off, when Buster is waiting at the bench on the beach, which says ARMY (something) OFFICER, he sits in a way to which all you can see are the words “ARM OFF”. Come on . I mean COME ON. If this is the smartest writing I’ve ever seen.... This is my problem. Supernatural doesn’t have this. It’s lack of direction or order with anything leaves it feeling messy. This wasn’t apparent in Season 1-5, but that’s just because in Seasons 1-5 Supernatural was actually going somewhere. There was a point. An end goal. Everything was leading up to something greater, so the writing didn’t have to be too smart, because the purpose was clear. The characters had something to develope. It made sense. Season 6 development was still there in a sense, but even then it was going down hill. Right now, Season 14, we’re left with the remains of Sam and Dean Winchester. Everything they do, EVERYTHING, does not matter. They’ve been developed. They’ve come to their end. There is no other point to reach. They are now static characters, and have been since Season 8. Sure, things have happened. But there is no perspective shift anymore. They don’t see the world differently. If anything, they are going through the same character arches again and again. There is this one episode. It was when Billie was the new Death (Hated her, she served no purpose and did nothing to move the plot. Her threats to kill Sam and Dean were bland, and she never went through with them.) and Dean got sent to her “Book World”. (I don’t know where the fuck he was.) Anyways, they were talking. Dean says he wants to die. He’s sick of the hunt. He’s tired. Can’t remember what Billie says, but the point is, this has already happened. Does anyone remember Season 5? Because I do, and I know for a fact Dean followed the same exact arch. Even steming from Season 4, as it built to him deliberately locking himself and an “infected” Sam in a room in the episode Croatian. This is where he confesses it all to Sam. Then, fully coming around the cornor, “Point of No Return” where Dean is seen fully willing and ready to accept Michael, writing something that could be described as a suicide note. Then Adam takes his place, and by the end of the episode, Dean’s view has shifted. He has a new motivation. THAT is a character arch. We’ve been through this Dean. Even during the Season Charlie dies (can’t remember which, they all kind of mix up after Season 7.) Where Sam is trying to save Dean and goes, “He’s been saving me forever, time to save him.” Sam....w h a t? But you have? You did?! YOUR WHOLE FUCKING CHARACTER ARCH WAS THAT YOU FINALLY GOT TO SAVE DEAN AND THE GOD DAMN WORLD. YOU JUMPED INTO THE FUCKING PIT. THAT WAS IT. YOU SAVED EVERYONE AND DEAN GOT A NORMAL LIFE. FUCK. Fuck. Jesus. .. Supernatural was never a great show. But now, it’s comparable to General Hospital. They’ve even given up with any creative direction torwards the camera work. Everything is bland. Everything is poorly written. It does not leave you panting around the corner, desperately waiting to see what happens next like Breaking Bad. It doesn’t even know what it’s doing or where it’s going next, like Arrested Development. It’s just....dead. Supernatural is Happy Days. I’m upset.

I could not finish season 8. I was so bored, and every time I would hear about something moderately interesting happening (Lucifer is back, Chuck is back, Deanmon, Gabriel is back, etc.) in future seasons I could not be entertained enough to stick through. I also feel like they wimped out of a lot of would be interesting plot points to keep the fandom satiated, which while I find endearing, does not a good show make. Supernatural will always be one of shows I keep near and dear in my heart, and the cast is full of amazing, good, talented people, but I'm more entertained by fanfiction than I am anything they've come up with in the last few years.

I still follow the show, seasons 7 through 9 and debatably ten are pretty shabby but 11 and up you may believe more effprt is added, and I'm glad I've stuck through. As for the fandom, I joined as quickly as I left honestly. I don't have cable, so either I wait about ten months for a new season to release or I deal with the CW app which release times vary (I also have schedule conflicts) so the spoilers were a big contrubution-- kudos to the people who can make GIFs overnight but cmon, stick to the two week rule at least. Secondly, I mainly dislike fandoms in general due to ships, as I am not invested in content just because two characters have chemistry, and the "wars" just make me not want to appreciate the show, which can be pretty dangerous honestly.

I've actually just jumped ship from a fandom, though it was a video game and not a show. It was so fun at first, and then the negativity had started and only grew. There was almost a sense of obligation to stay, as I had met great people and made friends and that I should have had to stick it out for them, but last week I hit my breaking point. The sheer negativity had gotten to me. I still keep them as friends but I had to walk away for my own sense of peace. I don't see an issue with people pointing out flaws, as that's how people can recognize and avoid making those mistakes in the future, but when that conversation stops being constructive and starts tearing everyone else down, that should be the cue for people to just walk away. Thank you for the video, and I'm sorry Supernatural and Doctor Who had ended up where they did :(

After the series Sherlock ended some in the LGBT began asking "...do you think we overdid the gay??" The show was laced with gay subtext and coy scenarios that could be manipulated into gay memes on purpose to tittlelate fans. In retrospect it seems some in the community began to feel it all was a bit much. From what I understand the SPN cast did say they were directed to basically eye fuck to get the same results like in Sherlock for the fans. It seems to show in the gag reels where the cast are hamming it up and vamping for the camera. There seems to be a good deal of passive agressive behavior in the behind the scenes clips. If the guys didn't agree with what they were told to do it seems to show in the bloopers.

Completely agree with you on, Doctor, and Potter... I will still watch FBWFT 2 but, just as wishful thinking. However... I think you can give another shot to Supernatural. I know, it repeated a lot of it's old storylines where one falls another holds up and on And on And on. But if you remove all the episodic episodes in between, the overall story arcs have improved a lot since season eight. Season 9 although a little dull in the beginning... picks up quite nicely in the later one's and season 10 kind of follows, but, from 11 the writing moved up a lot, and it's currently going in a good direction, if love the brothers. Yeah there are still a few dragging episodes which seem like repeats of old ones, but right now, they are tying season 5 in with the current one, and after a certain character comes back, (I won't say which one, just to avoid spoiler) the series picks up nicely. So just give it another shot. I did and it agreed with me.

i ran into a woman at the grocery store about a year ago who was the biggest fucking lunatic supernatural fan ive ever seen like i was at the deli and it was just me and this random 50ish woman small talking somehow we got onto the topic of supernatural. after telling her i was a fan i was treated to about 40 mins of her talking to me about the show, her showing me like a hundred pics of her at cons with jared and jensen like multiple pics at different cons. oh and she has the tattoo that sam and dean have to keep from being possessed. she showed me even though i didnt ask her to. the final nail in the batshit crazy coffin was when she told me that jared and jensen were actually gay in real life and their marraiges were fake. i swear to god im not making this story up

I don't get the queerbaiting point. It was clear from the beginning for me, that Cas and Dean was ment to be a joke. I still ship them but I know that they never be canon. Same goes for Sherlock and John or Stiles and Derek. Why do people think they will get together just because they have a bromance?
@warlordera5409
@warlordera5409 6 лет назад
Alex B. i guess you don't read enough straight romances? because i see it done for laughs quite a few times. and if it's comedy, everything is up for grabs, even "homophobic" ones. Also, I hate the word "queer-baiting", it really is clear it would NEVER happen.
@SisterTheohild
@SisterTheohild 6 лет назад
Alex B. I have to say that WarLord Era has a point there. You clearly don't read or watch many straight romances... There are so many romances, were you get the feeling that the girl will get together with this boy, because is pushing them together in a few romantic like moments or they already have a great bromance. But in truth, they never get together and the girl or the boy will end up with someone else. But yeah you're right when you say, that queer people and their relationships should be not a joke. But it's done with straight couples too. So I think that is pretty equal.
@shamidkpzd
@shamidkpzd 6 лет назад
Y'all are making a lot of assumptions about what I read, lol. If anything, I've read/seen more straight romances since that's what dominates literature, tv shows, and movies. But you are describing two different situations. The guy not getting the girl in the end as expected or choosing someone else is a different matter. Maybe it's funny to the audience to subvert expectations, but that's not the equivalent of 'let's put these two in obvious romantic context and then say no homo.' (Also, most of the time when I've seen this, we are meant to sympathize with the one who was rejected. Which is not the case with the characters in this show). The whole joke about the queer baiting ships like Destiel is that it's "funny" to put them together in certain couple like situations, but they'll never be together no matter how gay it looks because the writers won't actually make them queer characters. So it's "funny" that they look like a couple because they're not gay. That is hardly the same thing and it has a rather long history throughout movies and television but I don't have time to write a novel here about that. With Destiel both the writers and actors have admitted to playing up the roles and writing it in a particular way to seem more romantic on purpose. But then they turn around and act surprised when people read them as a romantic couple...way to gaslight your audience folks. Furthermore, the writers have the characters in said romantic coded situations make references to things in lgbtq+ culture in the actual show. And if you are not an active part of this culture you can easily miss these reference, and just think that people are reading too much into a show's characters. But they are put there. On purpose. By the writers. Dean and Cas can have a deep, platonic friendship that is interesting and complex without using romantic tropes and making references to lgbtq+ culture whilst doing so. Instead of committing one way or another, the show runners like to dangle them on string and alienate a group of people who are already starved enough for representation, so they keep biting. Since lgbtq+ representation has a long history of being censored, many romances in the past have been subtext, as just straight text would offend the sensibilities of a mainstream audience and just not be green-lit for distribution. (This is still true in a lot of senses). And the writers have played into this, for the lulz and the viewership. Again, long history of this that is beyond Supernatural and Destiel. There are a number of documentaries and studies about it because it is impossible to condense it all here. The Celluloid Closet however, is a good start.

I agree completly that's how I see it as well. Plus Derek and Stiles doesn't even have a bromance I mean I ship them but in the show they almost hate each other. If someone wants to see romance between two male and female characters watch Hannibal. Because Will and Hannibal are canon just like Margot and Alana. But of course it got cancelled before the last season...

Son, that's literally the definition of queerbaiting; toying with a potential queer ship but not having any chance of making it canon.

I didn't start watching Supernatural until 2016. I binged the first 11 seasons before season 12 came out. Personally, I still find it a lot of fun and I'm still in love with the series and where it's gone up until now. I agree, if a show and fandom stops being fun, fans should't feel obligated to keep watching/participating. You lost your enjoyment for Supernatural and you left and that's entirely your right. I'm still having fun with (including reading/writing fan fics for the show), so I'm going to keep sticking around. :)

No matter what I will continue to watch it. Obviously there will be ups and downs for a show on for 14 yrs with 23 episodes each. And every season, there is couple of outstanding epic meta episodes like baby, fan fiction...and we have J2. They have grown so wonderfully as actors.

People boycotting the show because of "queer baiting" seems a little extreme to me. I personally have never viewed their relationship as romantic, and a lot of the "Destiel Subtext" seen on Tumblr is taken completely out of context. I suppose I can see why people ship Destiel, but I don't feel like they've ever baited fans with it. Also, SPN is a CW show. A certain amount of angst, cheesy-ness, and bad writing is to be expected. That's the nature of the channel. Some seasons are certainly better than others, but there are aspects of every season that I've enjoyed. And aspects of every season that I've disliked (some more than others). S1-S5 are the best, but that doesn't make the rest garbage. In fact, contrary to common opinions, I loved S9-S11. S8 and S12 were good as well. S6-S7 are not my favorites, but I don't think they are bad enough to stop watching over. I'm also loving S13 so far (I just started it). The cast is also full of genuinely good people, and the relationships they have with each other are amazing and rare in the industry. I guess what I'm saying is that SPN should be taken with a grain of salt, and enjoyed for what it is. I don't think it should be viewed from an overly critical perspective because plot holes, inconsistencies, and such are to be expected from any CW show. Personally, SPN (and it's wonderful cast) brings me a great amount of joy, so even though it's not the best show I've ever watched, it is my all-time favorite. I can look past it's flaws because I love what is represents at its core.

I love this video! You’ve put into words something I’ve felt about Supernatural for a long time. And people don’t actually talk much about why people quit fandom or even quit source material entirely. I used to watch Supernatural sporadically because I didn’t really have time for fall/winter shows in high school, but the story always managed to keep my attention and keep me excited. By the time I was in college, I didn’t enjoy the show very much. The queerbaiting was a big reason why I quit the fandom, because by season 10 or 11, the potential of the Destiel ship was one of the very few things I enjoyed anymore. I actually tuned back in for season 13, but only casually. There are better shows and more fun fandoms, like you said.

Very much agreed. By the end, Destiel was the only reason I was watching, and it was more and more obvious that it was just queerbaiting and not slow burn. And like, I'm an adult now. I can just go buy books with actual gay characters when I want to.

If your issue with Who was specifically Moffat related rather than the show generally, he's gone now. And who knows what Chibnall will do with it. And this happens with Who. A lot. A change of producer and/or script editor for the first 26 seasons, or the lead writer now, can completely change the tone, feel, and in some cases genre the show is - S17 (Which had Douglas Adams as script editor, who was writing very much in the comedic style he's known for) is barely recognizable from S18 (probably the show at it's most 'serious' sci-fi it's ever been), aside the same TARDIS team until half way through S17, for a prior example. I'm not saying you owe yourself trying it again with the change in showrunner, nothing so ridiculous - I'm saying that if you want to give the show another chance, this is likely a good point to do so - Narratively everything's going to be new (New Doctor, new companions, and so forth), and a new showrunner on top of that means that everything's up in the air as to what the show will be like for the next few years.

Yes, give the new season of Doctor Who a shot. It might turn out to be a pleasant surprise I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing what Chris Chibnall will do with Jodie Whitaker as the new Doctor. I hope you will too. As for Supernatural, I was really hoping that the CW would pick up "Wayward Sisters" which would have allowed the Supernatural franchise to move beyond Sam & Dean, but I believe the CW was afraid of killing it's golden goose & the network decided not to pick up the spin-off series. However, the CW chose to pick up "Legacies" which is an expansion of the universe on "Vampire Diaries" & "The Originals" that I'm really looking forward to as well. The show will air on October 11th after Supernatural this Fall on the CW. The show's first season will consist of 13 episodes. If Supernatural isn't your thing anymore, give "Legacies a try.

Supernatural was so dear to me. I quit after S8 too, and I can barely remember the storylines from S6 onward (except for the relationship between Dean&Cas) because they were so boring. To be more specific about my Dean&Cas comment: I don't actually ship them but they were the best thing about the show at some point, and I would have shipped it if I didn't feel unashamedly queerbaited by the writers.

And no they dont make jokes about fans, in contrast they really appreciate them, always mentioning them in the Show, even make whole episodes only for the fans / towards the fans, like the musical one! It is really sad that u stopped watching cause u missed a lot of those episodes then.and no, it is no Queerbait, Fanfiction is often enough mentioned. But the main potion of fans dont want a gay relationship, so they wont do it. IT would also be totally gainst deans character and nature , just by the way

I never joined the fandoms of any series or game I’ve ever watched/played, i can’t be bothered interacting with people simply because we enjoy the same thing online and obsess over it for awhile. Yes, the main plot line for Supernatural ended at season 5, but i still feel it’s got plenty of fresh stories to introduce such as expanding on the lore of monsters and considering the creative freedom of the Supernatural world a lot can come of it. (In the right writers hands though) Sure reused plot points are here and there but lots of series’s do this and add their unique style to it. As long as the series remains fresh and new per episode then to me that’s fine, but i do understand watching something that feels like it has overstayed it’s welcome.

For supernatural I really liked the show and I still kinda watch it, into season 9. But I’m a dumb teenager and I can’t really tell if I like a show while I’m watching it because, in the moment I like it. But looking back I can definitely see where the writing started lacking and the war took too much of the focus and too many twists that wasn’t enjoyable anymore. I’m not sure when I lost my drive to watch it but I don’t think I’m going to be watching it anymore, but for some people it might be enjoyable to watch.

I came into the Supernatural-fandom super late (Like 3 months ago) and have progressed until season 9 so far. I agree, the female writing sucks ass (Except for Charlie and Meg). My favourite character is and probably always will be Crowley simply because he's that lovely kind of douchebag with a healthy amount of sass. Some of the ships simply creep me out, thats why I don't go into the fanfiction and fanart area of it anywhere in the internet. I gotta admit, I think the 'these guys are gay' comments from characters IN the show about the brothers are funny, but I certainly don't want to read or even think about Dean and Sam having sexual intercourse. Like seriously, they are brothers...Thats just nasty. That's like shipping Fred & George Weasley...Oh damnit wait, that's being shipped too. Anyway, a great and informative video! I think I'll never ever read any kind of fanfiction regarding Supernatural. Not that everything is bad, I don't want to offend anyone there. And IF a Dean/Sam shipper reads this comment: Please explain to me why you like this ship without insulting me. Sorry for the large comment, have nice day :)
@Hannabi98
@Hannabi98 6 лет назад
Lurch Senpai Yeah I agree it's creepy and wrong. And the only reason why people started shipping it in my opinion is because Jared and Jensen are handsome and back in the first 3 season there were no Castiel or Gabriel or Benny for example so they were the only two male characters so let's ship them.....even if they are brothers.....like wtf?

Hanabi199823 I completely agree with you and they given came up with a name wincest gross. I remember when Jo and Dean were starting to have a relationship and all the fan girls were pissed. It ended up going nowhere cause of the fandom. Heart was good but again they could have tried to save the girl more but they didn't want Sam to have a steady gf. The fandom didn't want to see the boys with girls but with each other? I believe now they are asexual. Season 10 for me was the worse the characters changed I don't want to give away spoilers but Rowena and especially Charlie become silly. I don't like it when a show changes it's characters to fit a story line. Yet I still watch the show I like Jack-don't judge me.

I made it to season 12 with SPN but bailed before the finale. Went from having a huge Tumblr following to abandoning my entire blog practically overnight. For this exact reason. It stopped being fun. Even conventions weren't fun anymore, with fans threatening Misha with physical harm ffs! I still do Doctor Who because I have kids who absolutely adore it still. I find enjoyment in watching my kids enjoy the nonsense. What I find frustrating is that I've always been the one to drag my friends along with me into fandoms, but I always seem to reach my Done Point before they do. So they try to gossip with me about fandom drama and I just blink at them because I have no idea whats going on anymore.

The main thing that gets me to quit fandoms is, aside from just losing interest, people in the fandom trying to force something that isn't canon down everyone's throats & not tagging it. Like not tagging "the popular ship" so I can avoid it if I don't like it, or not tagging "the weird fandom kink" if I find it gross. You'd be surprised by the amount of times this has happened to me. Everyone thinks if something is popular they don't have to warn for it or label it, even if it contains a common trigger...

Had to stop the video at 5 minutes because you’re not even getting the seasons right. Season 7 was the Leviathan season and I agree it was a flip flop but it had its moments. The show was so so from about season 6-8 after season 9 started to pick up I thought it gave the show a reboot. If you had kept watching the female characters get much better they made a pilot like spin off called wayward sisters in season 13 featuring Jody Mils and Clair as the main characters. I thought it was very good and I can not wait for it to be a made a show if that’s what’s in the cards. The one thing the show always ends on is a down note with a “what do we do now?!” Kinda thing and it seems they’ve found a formula for the show and it works. It could keep going till season 16 and I’d still anticipate every episode. They go one episode main story line, next episode monster of the week, next episode monster of the week with bits pertaining to the plot and then big exciting episode about main plot rinse and repeat until season finale. In my opinion this is how they can draw in ppl who don’t watch the show regularly for one episode and keep the die hard fan fed with the main plot. I hope it never stops.
