THE FANATICS -a documentary
Filmed in 1989, THE FANATICS is a fly-on-the wall- documentary of a Birmingham’s biggest band. Fresh from the recording of the Suburban Love Songs EP for Chapter 22, THE FANATICS, led by frontman Simon Fowler, shows the band recording new tracks, playing dates around the country and reflecting back on their career to date.
Friend of the band, Daniel Rachel, borrowed a domestic video camera and followed the Fanatics through, what turned out to be, their final months. In the final scene of the documentary an argument between Fowler and lead guitar player, Paul Wilkes, exposes mounting frustration between the band members. Two months later a new guitarist, Steve Cradock, is recruited and the Fanatics rename themselves, Ocean Colour Scene.
THE FANATICS was recently discovered on a VHS tape and despite often poor quality recording the film is an incredible document of the nucleus of the band that would in little over five years record the million selling album Moseley Shoals.
