It didn't but whatever they are using today isn't EPO. So they get less of an advantage. Which is evident by the fact that il pirata clocked some of the best times ever recorded despite all the advancements in technology and sport science made since.

Athletes now undergo frequent testing governed by external organisations. Moreover, the times current riders are doing are slightly slower than those of older generations, despite being on modern equipment, and training has vastly improved since those times. It doesn't mean there aren't some that are still getting away with it, but the peloton is certainly much cleaner...

I remember a local bike shop, Eric Burgess cycles I believe, sold a lot of bianchi bikes and they were given one of pantanis bikes to borrow briefly. The shop had what I can only assume was a promo meeting at a hotel that's built on a steep hill. I was in my early teens at the time pre growth spurt and was allowed to ride his bike. It felt so great compared to heavy road bike I had at the time. I even borrowed a bianchi cap, that's a fond childhood memory for me. For years we had a life sized cardboard cut out of Pantani in the loft

The crazy thing is, and the point of the video, is that despite all the advancements in bike tech, tyres, sport science, sports nutrition, Pantani still has the fastest climbing times on some of most prestigious climbs in pro cycling. Even if the top riders of today are breaking WADA rules, they are no where near as juiced as people from mid 90's to mid 2000's

sports like cycling which requires more stamina/endurance, power 99% of the time rather than skills, will never get rid of magical substances. it is up to the uci who they dont like and expose them. sometimes blame/ make scapegoats if scandals arise.

There was suspicion in the good old times when Eddy Merckx used to win the flats, time trials, climbing and intermediate stages. Tadej Pogacar does the same now and everyone goes 'he's the one'. That's not normal, just legalize doping...

Those wheels are not correct. They're very heavy. Nobody used deep V rims in the mountains until Carbon Fiber rims came along. In 1998 the only raceable CF wheels were from LightWeight of Germany and I never saw Pantani using anything like that. I think Corima had some wheels that were similar but still too heavy at that time. I think Armstrong experimented with LightWeight brAND and their official Trek sponsor had Rolf brand prototype CF wheels that broke during a crash before they were tried out in the mountain stages.

Got an ev2 - was on the tech show a few years back on the upgrades section as it’s full super record 11 with spada stilettos. It’s extremely light and great on climbs but keeps breaking as it’s Italian.

Put the feather on this and a new top race bike and se how much difference there would be up a climb. Could be so interesting to see if the new bikes actually is that much faster than the best climbing bikes of the past 🫣🤫
