An excellent and intriguing podcast. I’ve done three fasts in my life (seven days and two four-day fasts) and often intermittent fast and cycle in elimination Diers. I’m over seventy now and would lik do another prolonged water-only fast of five to fliurtn days and learn about how to obtain all my nutrients without supplements. I’m not on any medications. I really dislike and even fear conventional medicine as Because I have seen it keeping people sick.

How much is the cost? Thank you
@CP-jv4xt
@CP-jv4xt 6 дней назад
It was around $3400, I don’t remember exactly for 13 days but I had a large room with attached private bathroom. I had additional services that were extra also. It depends on how long you’re staying, if you need labs etc. I would enter the extensive medical questionnaire and the doctor will call you to tell you if you’re a candidate to fast and for how long and that will determine pricing. It was worth every penny. Most people that go there always return because it’s such a great experience. They are booked for several months so start the process now. I believe it’s a $500 deposit to hold date but if you need to reschedule it still stays as a credit. I took a short flight from Southern California that was really inexpensive directly to the small airport in town.
@kentshultz6157

@@CP-jv4xt That cost is really not so bad IMO, considering how transformative folks like you say it is. Was your 13 days including the re-feeding period? It was not bad at all in the way of pricing. I’m not overweight but have a horrible sugar addiction and was hoping to reset my gut. I did 7 day fast with re-feed. The food there is amazing I’m still making several recipes I learned there. All SOS free. I had Dr Goldhamer adjust my neck and back which was much needed. Fun fact: in almost every state, chiropractors are licensed as physicians (the word means doctor, if you were not aware) and a quick Google search will show you that the education is nearly identical (to obtain the "doctor" status) with MDs routinely receiving additional work training in internships and residencies, while many chiropractors also receive additional training in specialized fields (pediatrics, radiology, rehabilitation, etc) The more you know! 🌈 Edit: He's also apparently an osteopath, which is also a doctor.
@JBradH
@JBradH 2 дня назад
I recently spent 10 days at True North. Every patient is evaluated on arrival by an MD or DO. Then, during your fast, you are checked on 2-3 times per day by other medical staff, and depending on the length of your stay, you will have recurring visits with your MD or DO, and finally you will have a check-out appointment with your MD or DO. Dr Goldhamer runs the facility, provides chiropractic services, gives lectures, mingles with the patients, etc. He has created a great atmosphere to get well, and be appropriately medically monitored.

I was having gallbladder issues and had one attack that sent me to the ER. But I refused to have an operation. So I went to True North to see if I could help myself. After a few days eating there, I did a 5 day fast, water only. Then re fed for a few days. And ended up leaving early because frankly, I felt great and I missed my dogs😁. I have not had to have surgery. Occasionally I get a little pang, I clean up my diet and I’m doing great. I do fast almost every day from 7 pm to 9 or 10. Hope this helps. Good luck

How do manage working and fasting for long periods of time?
@KK-lg8uz
@KK-lg8uz 4 дня назад
@@sealife13 you can always just do a fasting mimicking diet, a ketogenic diet. The best version being carnivore. You still get all the autophagy benefits and if you incorporate intermittent fasting you will lose body fat without damaging yourself with long term fasting.
@sealife13
@sealife13 4 дня назад
@@KK-lg8uz Do you have examples of how you damage yourself when you fast longterm? My liver and kidneys are healthy. Just curious
@KK-lg8uz
@KK-lg8uz 4 дня назад
@@sealife13 because with extended fasting you are going into a heavily catabolic state. Your body will start breaking down muscle tissue after about 72 hours without food. A ketogenic diet is also known as a fasting mimicking diet because you get the effects of autophagy. I think previously people thought that you only trigger autophagy in the absence of food, but it happens when insulin levels are suppressed, in the absence of carbs. So fasting can be great, but probably best not to go beyond 3 days. And if you're only doing this for weight loss why not just try a strict 0g carb carnivore diet and do daily intermittent fasting to start tapping into your own body fat storage. At least then you wont get muscle wasting, just make sure you're eating plenty of animal fat and protein in your eating window. Maybe a 4 hour eating window per day. Or even OMAD. It’s important you have no calories whatsoever when you’re not eating though. Get somewhere north of 100g protein per day. I eat between 150g-200g protein. Im 87kg and exercise every day. 100g of protein from ribeye, lamb and whole eggs would be my minimum. I use fruit occasionally for hydration, but it will get in the way of fat burning. Hope that helps. I'd also strongly recommend weight training and cardio, daily. The more muscle you build the less fat you will hold. Extended cardio also puts you into ketosis. Dr. Chaffee is a good resource to follow. Good luck.

After watching a previous interview with Dr. Goldhammer (and Jeff Nelson at VegSource) - I did a 22-day water fast (not medically supervised) and it was great!! No hunger after day 2 or 3. I did get a "little light-headed" when I would stand up too fast. Lost 20 lbs. Amazing experience!! I think the "warning" at the beginning of this video is unfortunate / unrealistic. Most people (95%) don't have the time/money to go to the True North Health Center. Most people would have great success / great experiences - if they try a 5, or 10 day ( or 21 day ) water fast . That's assuming that the person doesn't have any serious health conditions (diabetes, etc) that would need to be monitored with adjustments to meds. I hope that (relatively healthy) people feel motivated to give water fasting a try.

Any idea how much of that weight loss was adipose tissue and how much of it was lean mass? Weight loss when what you're losing is muscle is not recommended unless you're already built like The Rock. If weight loss is your goal then I'd strongly recommend lifting weights and upping your protein intake in order to raise your basal metabolic rate and keep muscle while also running a slight caloric deficit. I'm pretty sceptical about all this beyond the issue of muscle retention. I'd need to see some solid science to show it's having positive effects potentially due to promoting autophagy.
@frederickkrewson638
@frederickkrewson638 7 дней назад
@@FlatToRentUK There was definitely a loss of some adipose tissue and lean muscle mass. I wasn't in any position / situation to get any exact measurements. ( it's very difficult to keep up any strenuous workout regime during a prolonged water fast ). Typically the loss ratio is 75% fat and 25% lean muscle mass (though the lean muscle mass normally, quickly comes back when you can re-start normal exercise / activities. The massive health crisis in the Western World isn't based on a slight difference in a person's lean muscle mass. Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Attack risk, High Blood Pressure - are killing millions of Americans every year. My goal is to make sure that: 1. My weight; 2. My blood pressure; 3. My resting pulse rate/my arteries are all perfect. After that - I'll worry about increasing my "lean muscle mass"

@FlatToRentUK 7 дней назад
@@frederickkrewson638 It's a very fair point that it's hard to quantify the body composition changes, people aren't likely to have a DEXA scan before and after. However I'd be very surprised if it was only 25% if you were unable to do much/any resistance training while on a prolonged fast. Clearly you're also correct about the wider issue impacting western societies. However how likely do you think it is that there will be widespread adoption of prolonged water fasts followed by significant increases in resistance training in order to regain the muscle lost? I really can't see it happening. So on a personal level and a societal level I'd revert to what I said before - increase protein, lift weights, eat a healthy diet with a caloric deficit. This will achieve weight loss, maintain/build muscle and almost certainly have better adherence than prolonged fasting. The question is does prolonged fasting deliver extra benefits and I'd need to see some science confirming this. Because without them it sounds completely unnecessary.

@@EarthEncountersTravel - I eat a vegan diet, and after the end of the fast - I just ate sparingly - mainly eating fruit and soups for days 23 - 26 and then more or less resumed a more "normal" plant-based/vegan diet.

This is a fun bit of serendipity - I've been struggling to get a fast going for a few months now. The food cravings have been out of control. But I did fast yesterday and woke up today feeling strong and committed to keep going. And then I saw a notification that this video had come up. Perfect timing 😁Thank you @richroll and Dr. Goldhamer - ❤Love you both!

I did a 4-month fast during lockdown as I didn’t want to go to the supermarket. Not only was it relatively easy it saved me a fortune in grocery bills. But what stunned me most is that as a sufferer of depression triggered by menopause, after the 3rd month something alarming happened - like my brain’s ‘Off’ switch had been clicked into the ‘ON’ position - it was a palpable ‘click’ like a tiny electric shock had occurred. I remember wondering “what just happened?” I hardly eat food any more, am nearly 70 with no health issues at all. Discuss……

At your age I'd be extremely concerned about your body composition. Sarcopenia will have been reducing your muscle mass by about 1% per year since around the age of 50. Fasting is going to hit the accelerator on depleting your muscle mass further. Obviously I have no idea about your body composition or if you lift weights a lot but strength is a huge indicator of a long and healthy life so do everything you can to build/maintain muscle mass.

I would like to hear Alan talk more about the rejuvenative and maintenance benefits of water fasting on specifically mental health issues. So many people out there with early dementia symptoms, declining memories, declining attention spans, various addictive tendencies associated with toxemia in the brain. There is a whole spectrum of benefits from regular fasting, in maintaining good mental health, so that individuals don't even begin declining too early in age on a wide variety of mental health issues. Fasting is said to also help prevent and even remove plaque from the brain, associated with Alzheimer's. As well stated by Alan in this interview, we have to interrupt the inception, progress and decline of many health problems today proactively, before they even get a chance to start and progress, by regular fasting and diet. For people who have mental health challenges, there is no better ongoing management & treatment, than regular and repeated fasting, supported by improved diets afterwards.

I think a really important point made during this was people should REST during fasting. I personally have found it really super annoying when I am trying to fast when I am around people who are eating. I tell my boyfriend to leave the house and eat over at his parents or elsewhere. It's just something that triggers me. The combination of rest and making sure you have very low stress while fasting is not discussed enough.

Actually I'd put cardiovascular exercise, strength and good quality sleep above all those. A good quality diet would be in the second tier. Fasting is way down unless you're struggling to control blood glucose and/or body weight. Cold exposure has benefits but nowhere near the top ones.

Thanks Rich and Dr. Goldhamer!!! And epic podcasts of priceless wisdom!!! I am 51 and had a very tough time losing visceral/abdomen fat and could not build lean muscle. I found out I had Low Testosterone and so I made the decision to get on TRT injections. It has been a game changer! I have incorporated fasting protocols with intermittent(18:6) more plant based diet but I still eat eggs and goat milk, since I have restored my T levels to a healthy range I now have the energy to do regular intense cardio and strength training, which when I had Low T I did not a have any drive or energy to train in the gym. It is more validation to here in this episode how deadly visceral fat is to our health and now the fat is dropping off of me like it never did!!! And also in the realm of TRT alot of men who get on TRT who have high visceral fat have had the issue with testosterone being converted to estrogen too much, so losing the visceral fat kept my body from producing too much estrogen or converting too much testosterone to estrogen. I have known the great benefits of fasting for many decades, great to see it being shared on Rich's AWESOME platform!!!! Keep up the GREAT SERVICE amigos!!!!🙏❤
