I don't think I'll take a balloon ride after seeing the last one! CORRECTION: Jessi's second name is COMBS, not COOMBS. Unsure where I've got that from! PREVIOUS IN THE SERIES: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CbIhYWPXFxk.html
Balloon rides are fine... It helps to understand just a little about how they're controlled and piloted, though... just in case of emergency. Not only could it save YOUR life, but with this little bit of knowledge, YOU could save dozens, everybody else "trapped" on the gondola, in fact. Obviously, balloons ride wind currents, so the pilots rise and lower the balloons to find the choice currents for the directions they want to go... It's not hugely "under control" as such, but there are deviations and differences, and you CAN navigate as long as it's relatively with the prevailing winds... SO the controls. There's a hand with a fuel control valve (sometimes but NOT always a "trigger") to light off and add heat taking the balloon UP... AND tied off (usually) to one side or corner, there's a rope that reaches out and UP to the TOP of the balloon, itself. That rope opens a sort of "valve" at the top of the balloon, letting the hottest air OUT... All it needs is a PULL to do so... When the hot air goes out, the balloon cools and goes DOWN... or stays down while weight is removed... It's as simple as that. In this story-case, then... ALL someone needed to do, is get a hold of that rope (most popularly, they have a handle tied or spliced to it to VISUALLY assure it's a control rope)... AND hang onto it while jumping out... the valve at the top would open, and fire and all, the balloon would go DOWN and STAY DOWN, as long as the person hanging, held on... Everyone could then evacuate, and the envelope would start to collapse... At that point, "Play it by ear" is the operative method... However, once you're on the ground, you can find your footing and stand upright, then giving you the larger control over how much "open" or "closed" you keep the "valve" at the top of the balloon... so you just TRY to keep it from completely collapsing but avoid it taking back off at ANY cost until everybody's out... We didn't hit even the local news... BUT some distance off from the State Fair (I won't sully the state, since it wasn't "officially fair sanctioned") I was on such a balloon ride. It was a bit sketchy, not being on Fairgrounds, BUT "cheap"... fun... I thought "What the hell"... AND while the fire wasn't nearly as catastrophic, the pilot jumped out, and up we started without him... AND the 8 (I think?) people in the gondola started screaming and crying... AND I wasted NO time fumbling around the edge to find that damn rope... We got to about 100 feet, and I had it, wrapped my arm with it, and JUMPED... I rather preferred my chances swinging out from a "relatively gracefully dropping balloon" than fending off flames from the gondola and fuel line. Once on the ground, while I was scrambling to my feet, I was also shouting "Get out! GET OUT! GET THE F*** OUT!!! NOW!!!" and everyone else was tumbling over edges and scrambling away... Wind yanked the thing across about a quarter mile, and I stumbled and struggled with the g** d*** rope before the envelope DID collapse, and the gondola flopped over... BUT mud and a small creek mostly knocked out the fire about then... The pilot and a couple other folks showed up with an extinguisher to salvage what they could. AND that was pretty much that. There were a few questions with police, of course, and a couple of my fellow riders got EMS rides to the hospital, BUT without much fanfare, it was over. They cited the pilot for something like negligent operations or whatever, and fined him. I don't know much more than that... The point of the story, however, is that these kinds of things CAN be imminently survivable. Keep your head about you, and try to become knowledgeable (at least a little functionally) of what you get into before random thrill riding. That's all. ;o)
There's more to the story about the cliff face falling on the boats. There had been a warning issued about the saturated cliffs that many of the boating companies ignored. More reputable companies cancelled services at the time. _And_ then some also broke regulations about how close they were allowed to get to the cliffs. Totally preventable and foreseeable tragedy.
Because we have roads that go right down to the face of a cliff we get ice buildup and so they have to go blast it but if it warms up or what-have-you we've had many accidents where people get hit with ice and it's heavy not too many people survive it so in the spring they put the roads down to one lane and blast the ice from the cliffs
Are you sure a "a warning issued about the saturated cliffs" isn't on like 80% of all time? So you either ignore it or shut down your buisness completely? Because where I live we get a storm warning in autumn 3-4 days per weak, and only 1 good wind per year.
A tube won't do it unless he was 50cm deep. Deeper you woluld need two tubes. One to inhale, another to exhale. Not understanding this has been the demise of many DIY divers.
You have a point but when have companies ever ignored experts warning them of an imminent tragedy in order to make profit, endangering lives and often ending in wrongful death lawsuits? (except like the obvious 27 million infamous examples we all know about) Never, that's when.
The first one, wtf. She was a lawyer and didn’t think there was a problem with doing a pencil dive into frigid water, through a small rectangle cut in the ice, in the pitch black, in a river known for its treacherous current? I can’t imagine the trauma her children endured.
The first story wasn't entirely correct. There was no current, it wasn't a dangerous river either. She was not the first person to go into that hole that night. Her husband even jumped in after her and came back out fine. The real reason she drowned is the way she jumped in her body ended up going in a curve which carried her away from the hole. In the pitch black darkness in the icy water it was impossible for her to find back out and so she drowned lost under the ice.
right? i've known you NEVER submerge yourself fully in an ice hole since i was like three. so weird to me anyone whos grown up in cold temperatures wouldnt know this.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. He knew the situation was hopeless. He wouldn't have been able to save them, he couldn't put the fire out once it started. We don't know maybe he told them all to jump.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. The pilot was literally on fire when he jumped, over 70% of his body was burned, that really should have been pointed out in this video. When someone is literally on fire, they aren't making conscious decisions.
I always joke that I'm not afraid of heights, I'm afraid of falling from said heights lol A hot air balloon just screams "accident waiting to happen " to me. Sure, car accidents happen way more frequently than falling from a hot air ballon and I drive everyday, but thats why it's called a phobia lol
2 things to avoid aviation-wise, helicopters and hot air balloons. Both can lose control easily and they won't just glide down, they fall. At least in an airplane or a glider you have a chance at surviving a slow descent.
There’s a huge annual hot air balloon fest not to far from me. Really nice to watch, but hard pass on getting in one. Too many variables when fire, gas, height and wind are involved.
We did take a hot air balloon ride a couple years ago. The misus couldn’t stand the heighT around the 100ft up in the air mark. I was laughing at her initially Then we went up to the 1000ft mark and that scared the shit out of me due to the chains creaking and the thought of losing the weight balance we produce on The basket (14 people needs to be placed accordingly on each side or else we’ll lose balance). Plus the thought of the hot air balloon being popped by some wild birds or the tanks that carrier the fuel exploding on us. You know the worst bit was it was an hour stay in the clouds and about 45 mins up in the air. How high we went? About 3500ft to 4000ft. That shit was scarier than the landing which is very unpredictable too. Not recommended to be honest.
It's almost like she was asking to meet her maker. Literally. Then got her wish. What an idiot. Definitely a Darwin Award, too bad she already spread her genes into the world.
Nightmare material. I felt quite emotional as this young lady was only 22, was feeling quite down from job rejections and took the flight to cheer herself up. How sad an ending. RIP to both the young lady and the pilot. 🌹🙏🌹
When I was a kid, Jessi was my favorite part of Mythbusters, even though she was only in 12 episodes. It’s nice to see people still talking about her life and legacy. RIP 🤍
I took one of those balloon safaris in Luxor, way back in 2004 and that was an eventful and unnerving experience... the lower part of the skirt, near the burner, caught fire and burned away a portion of the material while they were inflating the envelope. This caused many of us (I think we were about 20-30 people altogether) to immediately refuse to get into THAT balloon - the pilot and organizers all said it would be safe... no chance, mate!! Eventually, a replacement balloon arrived and our trip went ahead, albeit an hour or two later than planned. It was a great experience but seeing this story here, it sends a shiver down my spine to think what might have happened if we'd just gone ahead and climbed into the part-burnt balloon!
Damn, glad you guys didn't get on that balloon. Better safe than sorry! Tragic that the balloon passengers in this video didn't get such a warning sign before they got on. 😞
As an Egyptian, I would love to tell you about so much about how our private businesses in general being let off the hook with the safety standards in any and all aspects but that would take me a billion years so I'll just narrow it down to "Seems dodgy? Avoid it. Government-owned? Trustworthy. Private-owned? Take your chances" in literally everything and every aspect here.
In USA government owned is NOT trustworthy. Our government cannot manage anything’s correctly. (That’s why our Amtrak keeps running into trucks on the rails… and the bullet train only goes 100 most of the route.)
6:41 I've noticed that cameras do not pickup fog like human eyes do. I've used my phones camera to see thru fog at times. Im not sure about the reasoning behind this, but it could explain why they're listing fog as a contributing factor when the footage available doesn't show much
It could be because digital cameras pick up a certain amount of infrared, which the human eye doesn't see. Infrared is less prone to scattering off microscopic things, like the tiny drops of condensing water that make up fog. Life hack: your TV remote uses IR, so if it doesn't seem to be working, aim it at a camera in video mode and press some buttons. You should see a small part of the front of the remote flash.
The crash site may have been further away from the aircraft taxiing video and thus to say there was no fog might not be accurate at the crash site? It is a plane after all!
Actually, a little is missing from the last story! The first tourist who jumped out unfortunately knew someone else he inadvertently left behind-his wife! I can’t imagine the panic of the fire, the people, making that split second decision and then realizing that not everyone made that decision, that would weigh heavy on me ❤ I hope he knows it’s not his fault for surviving
1:Most people don't know how to use a parachute. 2:A parachute is usually between 1000-3000$ and there's a ton of people. 3:Now imagine all those 21 people jumping out of the balloon and opening their parachutes relatively close to each other. That would be pure chaos, people would fly into others parachutes, some people would tangle up their own parachutes or fly into others etc
First story: I remember my dad showing me a PSA video about water. He'd thought it would amuse me, knowing that I am well aware of the power and dangers of water. Tragic that some people believe that they can beat nature 😢
@WouldntULikeToKnow. The reason why the PSA was made doesn't amuse him. The fact that I already knew everything mentioned in it and more at age 10 did. I guess he liked knowing his little girl was safe around water, and it made him smile 🤷♀️
I saw the original video of the First Lady . Idk which was more heartbreaking , the fact that she died or the wailing sounds her children made. They could have at least put a attachment on her that would have allowed them to pull her out and possibly saving her life
@@faszikilawang8445 No, because plenty of other people did it the smart way- EMS present, guard rails and steps to help people in and out, a rescue rope, etc. You can't blame religion for this one because the religious have been doing it yearly with safety precautions. She decided to go off on her own with her family, in the middle of the night, with no safety measures in place. That was a personal decision.
@@dormantlime215 Safety and security measures defeat the purpose of it being an act of faith. The point of nut jobs testing their faith is that they don't need any of that shit, they have faith. That's what possesses lunatics to handle rattle snakes. Your faith is in security measures, not Jesus/God/spaghetti monster.
He actually did the smart thing and gave them a chance to survive. If he stayed the fire which was covering most of his body would've spread faster and the passengers would've been set on fire too. Despite being on fire, the guy was still the only logical person involved in that incident.
1st story, I don't understand why anyone would jump into a river that had a hole cut in the ice. I would assume the current would instantly take.them away
In this case it’s a good assumption… river current will drag you away. DARWIN AWARDS are for people who never had children & therefore removed their stupid genetics from the species. (This lady does not qualify.) .
Winter bathing is a thing in Sweden. But usually in a calm lake with no currents and several more experienced adults present. Also with a sauna to warm up in before and after.
ngl of all those, i think Jessie's death was probably exactly the way she would've wanted to go out. breaking the WR in a literal blaze of glory. what a daredevil.
She strapped herself to a rocket and pressed go, im pretty sure she was willing to die to break the WR. She obviously was or she wouldn't have done it. lmao.. You people don't think.
It’s good you cover the stories behind the footage - so many others don’t. Even if you covered older/well known footage it would be good to hear you add context and the human element to them
There's only one problem with your videos, I never want them to end! Another great compilation of tragedies to shock on a cool Sunday morning, thanks for your hard work. Take care from Australia 🇦🇺 🤯😎
Oh my goodness, the full video of Anna’s demise is absolutely horrifying to watch. I’ll never unhear the wailing of her children after she disappeared under the ice.
Hopefully they'll learn the value of reason, logic and critical thinking from the tragedy. Religious indoctrination makes good people do evil things and otherwise intelligent people so so stupid.
@@moonriver7439they ain't spreading nothing you have to be an idiot to jump into an ice river with no safety like the other ice holes. Regardless of the reason she did it too herself and her poor kids watch her last moments alive.
I can't believe the freaking pilot of the hot air balloon jumped . He should have told the rest to jump he knew they were in horrible trouble. That's just so sad as all these stories were but I think this was the worst . For the simple fact that more of them may have survived .I just found out 3weeks later when I first made this comment and I realize the pilot was in a very bad way himself so no he's not to blame and I apologize for thinking so . There is always more to the story .
The pilot was literally on fire when he jumped, over 70% of his body was burned. Most likely everyone who didn't jump immediately would have died (and likely died even jumping, as one of the 3 jumpers did.) If anyone was to (partially) blame, it was the ground crew who let go of the landing rope in order to run over and help the jumpers, if there was a slim hope of saving the balloon, it was doomed when the ground crew let go of the landing rope.
@@BigPuddin I just recently found this out and felt bad for thinking bad of him . I did go back and edit my comment . There really is always 2 sides to every story and I didn't think of that.
It's like the captain of the Caribbean cruise ship "jumped ship" before it capsized.people were like "he should have stayed on the ship and go down with it" I don't know if he was responsible for the many lives that were lost from that tragedy and arrested?
I have seen the clip of Anna Uskov and it terrifies me, not the video or the horrific thought of her death, but the cries and mourning of her children you can hear in the video. Its heartbreaking and i will never watch that video again because of how much those cries sent shivers down my spine
Jumping in that little ice cut out in a river with a strong current was nothing but 'fantastically stupid'. It just boggles the mind how utterly idiotic some people can be.
I have a cottage near that river, Oredezh, but have never heard of this case. About winter dipping there too, apparently. That's really insane, the current is really fast in this river all year round. It also has a dam which is another trap for fools in the summer. Btw, It's not only religious thing, many russians do it for health strengthening reasons. They are called morzhi, "walruses".
I'm Brazilian, about the third clip, my sister and father went there one week before the accident and as some have already said, the boats have been warned, responsible companies cancelled the trip entirely, some other ones went ahead with it, but a few even though they took the tourists there they stayed way behind, also way before rocks started falling some were literally yelling at the ones in the front to not go there, to lower the blasting music echoing everywhere, they kept partying and joking around, the little rocks started to fall first and more boats went to the back, the ones in the front kept ignoring, there are many videos in Portuguese of them basically calling everyone pussies, dancing and drinking, some even went off the boats for a swim WITH KIDS, then it was panic, big rocks then a huge pillar fell on top off them, not by the sides, exactly on top, body parts went flying, the original video is terrifying and trust me I was foaming at the mouth, this was entirely preventable.
Yeah, that pilot deserves an awful fate of his own. Abandoning all those people who had no idea how to save themselves. True, there might not have been anything he could do (cutting the tank loose and throwing it overboard comes to mind), but he's responsible, in the end.
There's a CONTROL ROPE up the side of the balloon. It's the "Down" control, and you only need to PULL on it. He (or anyone, really) could've grabbed that rope and hung onto it, even jumping over the side to swing. The balloon would go down, and let everyone off... As long as you pull, the hot air escapes, and the balloon cools and lowers... The worst it can do is approach a "fast elevator ride" down... To keep the flaming envelope from collapsing, you can let up on the rope, closing the top of the balloon to hold it up. It's really simple. The pilot was ABSOLUTELY responsible. He ABSOLUTELY COULD have done more than he did... AND he absolutely DOES belong in prison for his recklessness and negligence. ;o)
@@gnarthdarkanen7464 well that makes this story even more maddening. Usually a pilot saves his passengers and then himself. Knowing it was as easy as pulling a rope to save everyone but instead he jumps out makes me wonder why they didn’t charge him with 19 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
@@Franklin5261 Exactly why I put the bits about him absolutely needing time in prison... Maybe I just hold pilots to a little higher standard, but here in the States, we call an airplane pilot "Captain"... I'd like to think I take that title as seriously as they do in maritime law. The Captain GOES DOWN WITH HIS SHIP... or is at LEAST the last one off. You're right. It sucks all the worse because that rope has a handle attached, and it's a standard primary control... Anybody who's been in a balloon long enough to pay attention to more than watching people look like ants below, at least SHOULD recognize it relatively easily... SO the pilot should EASILY have been able (at 30 feet, no less) to just yank the g** d*** thing and shout at the nearest person to the fire extinguisher (hopefully they're required in Egypt the same as the States and most other "civilized" aviation countries) to help with the fire, while others get their chances to get the hell out of the basket/gondola... It clearly WAS NOT immediately catastrophic, since the balloon made it up to 1000 feet or more before it gave out and dropped from the sky. AND just to be clear, I've only ever been up a few times. I neither have a certification/license for it, nor a vested interest in getting them. It pisses me off to no end because I've had a LOT of great times on a balloon, bringing girls along for a thrill and a peaceful place (with a HELL of a view) where the pilot's the only other person who might know about us making out up there... and he (usually) didn't care... BUT now, it's closer and closer to hell just trying to talk someone into the idea, and I hate that assholes like that one are ruining the fun for everybody else. ANYWAYS... I brought this up because I WANT you to have the hope of going up. I want others to see how easy it is to find out what to do for emergency... AND that it's not something to be terrified of. That whole situation was just horribly negligent and deserves worse than manslaughter. ;o)
Omg! That first story is horrific. Why would anyone trust that process without a rescue team and safety precautions set up?!!! Her poor husband and children.
I wouldn't even entertain the idea of going on a balloon ride. They are all pretty sad tales. I don't think the first lady should have jumped in the water like that. She should have just dipped herself in slowly. Thank you once again Ryan and RIP to those who passed away ⭐
Well i gotta say jumping into a hole in an icy lake has to be one the dumbest most unnecessary deaths ive ever seen. Its hard for me to feel any sympathy on that one. So many sick people are WISHING they werent dying right now & this ladys jumping into icy death traps for fun
Spoiler Alert for no.1... OK, so why did the Pilot jump, knowing what the weight change would do to the balloon, and that his other passengers would have had no chance without him? Shades of Costa Concordia, Oceanos, etc. Was he prosecuted?
@@rb5078 There's a rope up the side of EVERY hot-air balloon's "envelope" to the top "valve"... That's a series of slits around the very top that this "control rope" can pull open. He DAMN WELL COULD have grabbed that rope and jumped... That would've dropped the balloon, held it down, and given EVERYONE a chance to escape. It might not have saved every single life, but it would've been SOMETHING. The truth is, ANYONE could've grabbed that rope and got the balloon down, IF they'd known or thought about it. The Pilot HAD to know in order to operate the balloon. It's a PRIMARY control. Anyone watching him pull on it to lower the balloon (because that's how it works to get down), SHOULD have noticed what he did and what happened. I know you're up enjoying the view, but TAKE A LOOK to the pilot once in a while. You never know when such knowledge MIGHT just become critical to your survival, and a chance to save others. ;o)
What the hell was that lady thinking jumping into that dangerous river! I mean, that is just pure stupidity. And to do it in front of your children & husband is unforgiveable. Silly lady.
This balloon accident is one of the events that really make me doubt everything. Those poor people were so happy. That they even had to die that day is terrible enough. But in this way, that's just brutal and cruel.
It's really hard for me to have sympathy with Anna's story because the entire time I was thinking "What the fuck did you think was going to happen???" Being extra for no reason now look at you
I feel that the hot air ballon pilot did tell those passengers to jump due to another passenger following his footsteps. Remember our nervous system is built different in all of us. I feel most of them froze out of fear & that caused their lives. RIP
It's extremely touching how you always bring your videos to an end by wishing a peaceful rest to the deceased. Very emotional. You are an amazing storyteller Ryan.
Either singles, or lists, very well done videos. Knowing that photos and video are real is a huge plus. Some channels use stock pictures that sometimes are from half a world away from the location of the story, but fail to distinguish between those and photos or scenes that may be directly related to the story. Kind of like talking about grilled porterhouse steak while showing photos of pizzas.
My Brother actually dated Jessi for a little while. I met her when my brother brought her to the hospital to meet us while my daughter was in the Childrens Hospital in St. Louis MO. My daughter has RSV and my brother wanted to see her and he was in town. Jessi was absolutely lovely and even held my 2yr old in her lap and stroked her hair. It is a damn shame she passed. She was so full of life and a love of living.
Wow, image driving (in commonly used units) 842km/h and your front wheels have problems and the assembly collapses. There is absolutely nothing you can do and with that speed you don't even have time to react in any sensible manner and there is nothing which could protect you from that impact. RIP Jessi, the fastest women on earth.
I’m very surprised there wasn’t some kind of automatic eject if something like that happened with one of those jet cars or even the entire seat and piloting area can be at ejected so she’s like in cased in a little dome. But that surprises me fighter pilots eject going that fast right?
Catastrophic failure on the ground is way faster and more destructive. As for a protective dome that slows down the care which would obviously make breaking the womens land speed record hard.
Living in Georgia, the country, I have witnessed Epiphany many times that I almost thought of trying it out myself. The river where they did that was also frozen but one can stand on the water safely. The people even had their kids dunked in the icy waters. My host brother said yes, sometimes they dig into the ice when the water in the river is frozen.
My wife, friends and I just happened to see Jesse's world record attempt the day before her fatality. We had no idea it was happening and we were going to leave in 20 minutes. And it wasn't even like there were a lot of people there; it's an extremely remote area so there might have been maybe up to six other campsites total across the whole lake bed. Definitely a one in a million chance just to be there, let alone for it to be somebody that I knew about from MythBusters. TMZ used my wife's video of what we saw the day before, but they had to mute the audio because our friend Marc was in the background saying "holy shit!"
The second one though. "faced many job rejections". What was she applying for? An astronaut or heart surgeon? Cus WHO WOULDN'T hire her? I'd hire her TODAY and I don't even own a business. Sh/t, I don't even have a job and I'd hire her RIGHT NOW.
Would have been cool if you mentioned that Jessi was a Mythbuster during the time that Kari Byron was on maternity leave, She did a bunch of shows with Grant and Tory. Tragic.
Once again, those Clips Captured before Horror makes my spine tingling and feel sorry to those people who loss their lives. The one video makes my spine tingling and made me shiver is the woman who jumped in the icy water with a strong current without any safety precaution.
I would never jump/dip into freezing cold water for religious or healing reasons. But I respect those who believe in it. Anna did it way wrong and others with her should have known better. I've wanted to go on a hot air balloon for awhile. But then I see videos like this one and decide to keep putting it off.
That first one really made me so mad. Why the fuck wouldn't you put the goddamn hole somewhere safe or at least have a fucking ROPE. but why would she or anyone else SEE how dangerous it was and just jump in? When you have kids it's not about you anymore it's abouy them. You can't take stupid risks and leave your kids without their parent. That's her fucking legacy now. Her kids love for the rest of their lives with the memory of watching their mother seemingly willingly jump to her death. And they have to live with that forever.
I consider myself a very mentally stable person, but I wasn't ready for the 1st clip. Imagine feeling being swept by current in the dark murky water at night knowing the ice WILL NOT let you out. Horrifying
😂OMG WHY ????????? WHY DID THAT WOMAN DO THAT !>>?? I heard the original dear baby Jesus the way her children are screaming for her made me burst into tears, I have 4. Again WHY???? Thanks again for such great content. May everyone R.I.P.
I looked up the full video with audio of Anna (1st video) and it took not even 10 seconds for them to realize she was swept away. 100% Annas fault and the adults faults for traumatizing the children. Could’ve tested the water, she should have prepared herself with a rope, rail, hang onto someone else but she choose to do that 🤷 sad for the kids but hilarious she was that stupid and ignorant.
