The FIFTY continues...But with a twist.
The goal was simple, ride bikes, loaded down with 100 pounds of climbing, skiing and camping equipment, over 1000 miles to ski three of The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America. A tiring adventure and a sufferfest of course, but in the context of an ongoing global pandemic, a nation divided by chaos and a populace on the brink, a simple adventure throws the simple act of adventure into question. Why purposely suffer? Why selfishly pursue adventure? Why go into the mountains at all? All questions that a month long adventure begins to throw into your mind. Starring Cody Townsend and Michelle Parker, "The Mountain Why" is a ski adventure unlike any normal escape to the wild.
This is a short film in The FIFTY series and line 28, 29, and 30 completed for The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

The feat of riding those miles, climbing the vertical, and withstanding all the pressures that surrounded you two was entertaining and quite moving. Michelle, your comments hit home and made it a bit emotional as I followed you two every step. These days with everyone being idle it was great to follow such an endeavor. The comments below about CV are uncalled for. If you knew a family member that has contracted it and another family member on the frontlines you might change your tune. Keep the great content coming Cody. I am hoping to ski some vert this winter, but not wishing to have to ride the roadbike to get there. If I had another adventure I would like to take, it would be scaling one of those 50 with you and crew and enjoying that finish beer at the end. Really enjoyed the film.

Dang, that's film-fest worthy... All the while, I'm trying to figure out the when (your in my "neck of the woods" after all). Obviously near when my Jeep got rear-ended on my way to an overnighter on Hood with skis and the dog. Judging by the snow, May? Would have been delighted to cross paths. Then the George Floyd reference put a clear timestamp, in an unfortunate way. Then the unrelenting last slog, exhaustion, emotion, fear... Was it just the light in the last scene, or did you get noticeably gray by the end? ;-) Thanks for some of the best of youtube imho

I wouldn’t call WA bear territory, there has only been 14 recorded attacks ever and almost half of them were by hunters believing the bear they shot was dead. @@CodyTownsend to each their own. I am in CO and I don't go into the mountains without a gun and/or bear spray. We only have black bears and they aren't even that aggressive. Between the bears, lions and 2 legged predators, there are plenty of good reasons to keep a gun on you in the mountains. Old people in a remote area are certainly among the group of people I would assume carry some kind of a firearm. Sorry about your not so welcome in Oso. There was a big landslide there a few years ago that took out half the town. I noticed more gunfire this summer than in previous years. People are pissed, confused, broke, unemployed, afraid, and looking for someone to blame. Glad the 23 was snow free and you didn’t have to backtrack.

Glad to see the 50 continues! Great luck guys!! That being said...I know nobody is talking about it (jk), I think everyone is scared...but that FART! That should be the basis for all farts, it was perfect! Perfect length, crispiness, sphincter control, audio (perfect climb in strength, great deep growl midstream, followed by the downfall & abrupt stop) & static release technique. That is not her 1st ripper. The only unknowns & equally important are 1. The Smell; quality, sweetness and/or rottenness, the linger & if there was a vomit, there is no better. Last but not least 2. Taste; did it leave a taste and/or after taste? Was it minty? Roadkill? etc. God Bless that little body for producing such a beauty!!

I’ve been a big fan of the Fifty, and will continue to be watching eagerly. But your comments on hearing gunshots in an area that have at least a few gun ranges, combined with being threatened by people exercising their lawful right of bearing arms is a... mistake. I’m not going to criticize. I’d like to recommend educating yourself, including going to a range and seeing what its like. Keep making inspirational trips, and I’ll keep watching. Just wanted to hopefully add perspective where I thought it made sense.

Thanks Mason, it may have been lost in translation and or misinterpreted as that happens a ton in films, so I’ll add some context since you’re definitely being respectful and I appreciate the heck out of that. 1st, I am a longtime multi-gun owner and have spent a ton of time at ranges. Very familiar and comfortable with firearms. 2nd, we were actually shot at with intention. There was gun fire about 100 yards off the bike path we were on, as I waited for Michelle, zero gun fire for a while and then as we crossed into the road, one shot at about 20 yards right in our direction. Could hear the additional crack as the bullet went by. Audio mics and the unfortunate side of sound mixing in a film is we had to quiet the gun shot in order to not blow out computer speakers. Oh and I wasn’t threatened by the couple walking with guns, just surprised because usually when I’m walk g in the woods with guns it’s for specific animal threats like what I encounter in Alaska, threats that are not nearly as present in suburban WA as in AK. Hopefully that adds context to that scene for ya and thanks for the nice comments

This right here is beautiful. Respectful, polite discourse. I got the same feeling from that scene and I really appreciate you both for clarifying it, and in such a humane way (especially for a youtube comment section). Y'all are awesome and an inspiration. Cheers!

@@CodyTownsend Amazing video and thanks for replying to this. I made the same assumption here as others did and this adds a lot of perspective and makes your reaction make much more sense. I enjoyed the change of tone and storytelling in this film which addressed some of the mental journeys which go along with the physical journeys you've documented so well in this series. That's difficult to do, and I applaud the effort. My remaining criticism of that scene with the gunfire, now understanding the situation better, is that when telling a story of an internal struggle in the external world, the way that narrative is expressed will reflect on its surroundings. That point in the film is an excellent point of contrast of the highs of this trip with lows of life threatening situations like that - however, by focusing primarily on this point it starts to fall into the trap of characterizing small rural towns as being backwards, violent, and uneducated. This characterization is a stark contrast to the kind and wonderful people I've encountered in areas just like this one in Washington. I know this wasn't your intention and I understand the narrative important of telling that part of the story, but I think it's important to also be cautious about what telling parts of stories like this can imply without full context. I still greatly enjoyed this video and am looking forward to the rest of the series - thanks for putting it together and sharing it with us!

Damn thanks for both the question and explanation. Owning a gun and being responsible isnt being an asshole and shooting at someone for kicks. That's crazy. Thanks for t by e clarification that was an awesome respectful back and forth which is much needed now a day.

HUGE thank you to Cody and Bjarne for realizing and creating this massive project. First time I've ever binged anything on RU-vid and way more entertaining and informative than most everything I've binged on Netflix or network tv. Looking forward to more!!
