Making this house a home
Going by from the city to the middle of the nowhere Utah. After living in the city our whole lives we decided to sell everything. We packed up and moved our family of 4 and sometimes 6 into our RV. We're going off grid with as much of the modern technology we can make happen. Follow us as we build our Homestead.

Funny how people question why you don't have siding, a garden, etc. My goodness, you have accomplished a LOT. You can only do so much and you didn't move off grid just to kill yourself. It will all get done in time. Your home above the garage really is spacious and it's coming together with personal touches. Give yourselves a pat on the back for all the hard work you've put into making a lovely home with a FABULOUS view. And yes, using the real stairs is one of the best exercises, so no need for the elliptical.

Just an idea for doors on your entertainment area, have you considered sliding barn doors? I've seen track systems for lower cabinets and you could make your own doors. They would slide instead of intruding on your living space when open.

My Grandbaby who is 3 and I love your channel. She loves seeing you building your house and the snow and animals. We are up the Coast from Sydney so its a world away from our hot summers. Agree with you about getting out of cities, and wish we could get the family out to the country too. The house is looking great xx

Funny story, Jen. Many, many years ago my husband and I built our own home. My biggest complaint was the many unfinished items. But my husband's unfinished projects were more like 35-40% of the whole. So, Nick's doing pretty darn good in comparison, LOL. One day, I was at the mall with a friend and there was a shop window displaying different t-shirts on mannequins. One of the shirts said "King of the Unfinished Projects." Needless to say, I purchased it and gave it to my husband. My husband did not like caulking either. So, I became the caulking queen, also jokingly known as "Brown Finger," a take on the James Bond film "Gold Finger." We used a dark caulk on our window trim because we trimmed them in Cherry. You guys are doing fantastic and have accomplished so much together in a relatively short period of time. Much kudos to you both! We moved from Miami to a rural area in N. Florida for the same reasons you did as we didn't want to raise our sons in a town we both grew up in and loved, but that was changing rapidly in growth and crime, and in peer pressure to keep up with the enormous amount of wealth moving into Miami. I'm so glad we did, our boys enjoyed a more grounded childhood. Ironically, once they graduated college, they both moved to big cities to pursue their careers. They don't have kids yet, so if that happens, that city lifestyle may change as well.

We moved from living in Homestead/Florida City after 40 yrs to outside of Tampa. My son, his wife and my 2 grandsons still live in Florida City.

Greetings from Rancho de Vegas, i share your sentiment about leaving Las Vegas. Outsiders see the glamour and glitz, but like you, we all know differently. This is not the last stop on my train for sure. I'm originally from Detroit and niss it but not the winters. Thanks partly to you, Utah is a possibilty but most likely Arizona. Bravo for taking a leap of faith and following your dreams.

I think you guy's have done an amazing job so far. Everything will get done in due time and I think you have answered all of those questions many times in the last year or so. Take note of the bad spots on your driveway , they will need fixing before you do your gravel and will be better for concrete trucks to get to you.

The window sils look GREAT. What a finishing touch. Now that you've brought decor in an the games I think you need doors on the entertainment ctr. Don't bame you for leaving Vegas. Wish I could leave where I live. I'm originally from Alaska and lots of people moving off grid up there because the lower 48 is just getting too dangerous. Living in AK is like living in a foreign country because it's so far away. Be safe enjoy your beautiful view.

Hello, I would like to know what your rescue plan is in the event of a fire? Everything is wooden, including the stairs you use to move in and out of the house. You only have one exit, which is not enough, the metal fire escape stairs should be connected to another emergency exit. Your living space is above the garage where you will probably have several tools and devices that can easily ignite and cause a fire, consider fire extinguishers and fire alarms. All this is good for you. Greetings.

I was in Las Vegas a couple of times, back in the 70's for 3 years and again in the 90's then off to Hawaii where we have been for 50 years total. In town and out on the west side. Left in 99 after 4 years.

Caulk is the mans best friend and leaving it a little lose will allow it to expand with caulk on the edges. Caulk it under to stick and fill the voids and caulk the edges for expansion. I like what you did, But with kids I would go 1 step further and add casing around the doors and windows and face frame it all in to keep the corners from getting hit where drywall will crack and wood would hold up when hit.

Hi. It's always nice to watch your progress. Have you thought about a freight elevator? I don't know if you have space either inside or outside for it, but it would save you having to carry heavy objects up and down that exterior set of stairs by hand. It would also give you a second point of access / egress from the upper house. Just a thought...

“Off Grid” is being used to loosely these days to describe nuances most people will never deal with. “Off Grid” has nothing to do with dirt/mud roads, ferrel/barn cats or leaving your tools outside in the winter and they freeze up. I am “On Grid” living in the country have 18 miles of dirt/mud road, barn cats but I haven’t left any tools outside yet. And I’m a 72 year old grouchy old man. PS. I still like and watch all your Off Grid videos.👍👍👍👍

You moved off grid because of crazy people. Why is this or that not done ? Did they build Roam in one day? NO If you take your time and build it the way you want it then you will be happy with what you have built and that is all that matters. Other people do not live there and they do not foot the bills. Love your videos and watching you build it the way you want it. The only thing I see is Your guitar setting by the window in the sun. Every thing will come together when the time is right. Just stay Safe

Here is another question … WHY WHY did you not build a simple elevator so u don’t hav e to carry heavy items, appliances, wood, groceries etc etc. on you tube there plenty of samples how to build a diy type elevator for garages. It is not a big cost, but the convenience is tremendous ….. think of times, when u don’t have an extra pair of hands to move stuff up to ur living level.
