For the weight and fuel usage, it looks like it would be more effecient to simply carry a candle lantern like a UCO and a twig stove separately to accomplish the same function.
The beauty of this stove is that pellets are super cheap and convenient, they give you a solid hour of burn time without touching it, smokeless until the end when the pellets are burned up, and boils 2 cups of water in 6 minutes. OK for a day hike or car camping. Not something for backpacking. Lantern function although it gives light, its not much. You can sit next to it and warm your hands which I do often on those cold evenings. Pellets are the only way to go. Tried pine cones and small splits of red oak...they burn but not well and mostly you just get smoke. Pellets
This is not my Video and I did enjoy it Just a word of caution DO NOT TRY TO DRINK A VERY HOT ITEM FROM THE METAL COFFEE CUP It will cook your mouth and tongue THE METAL gets extremely hot not like a regular coffee cup We had boiled coffee and gaveit a thought and then said hey this what you see in al the old movies. The differenceis they only had coffee that was luke warm not boiling hot It took weeks before I could eat and drink without a straw
We made the lantern/stove as a cool new thing to make celebratory tea or coffee while reading a book/playing cards. You can learn how to use wood for fuel but better to start with pellets. A lot easier to make almost no smoke with pellets.
+Jim H The reviews I've seen (other than this instructional video) use biomass other than wood pellets and show the lantern in a very unflattering light. However, they are using the Firefly as a rocket stove rather than a wood gas stove. Also, they have not allowed the stove to preheat, a necessity with this type of stove. I wonder how it would work with a Swedish fire torch.
Hiram Cook gave it a very good test run using the recommended fuel and instructions. lasted 30 min at best, and you cannot add fuel to keep it going. you have to clean it out and start over. I will admit, it looks cool, just not very practical.

Seems it should last more then an hour as a lantern though .I think the concept of a lantern that u can cook on is pretty cool, but functionality wise, I'm going to have to agree with the masses on this one ... Even with the "optimally" burning wood chips I have to think of a normal night camping ... Say it's fall and I'm planning on using the lantern from 6-10 pm ... That means I need some type of starter plus 8 cups of wood pellets to last me the night ... And I would have to start it 4 times... Doesn't seem practical to me.
No mention of burn time. I would not want to be in a cabin or RV with the fumes and smoke coming off of that thing. And drink water without knowing if it was unpolluted? Not lately. At least it would have to be boiled, and looks like it was just barely heated. OK for washing dishes, but no way for drinking. Another answer to a question that was not asked. Waste of money.
Why the hell would you lite this in a cabin or an RV? Would you build a fire inside your house in a garbage can outside of the fireplace and leave the windows and doors closed? You should try it. The world is overpopulated with stupid. It burns for just under an hour with 2 cups of pellets. Why wouldn't you leave water on it until it comes to a rolling boil for 5 min? If you need to boil it longer because you're boiling a gallon, add more fuel. It's not a great product but it'll work. You just need a fully functional brain and common sense. You may have already won the Darwin Award and you and your progeny are already dead by your hands, in which case, R.I.P. and my condolences to your family and friends.
