The first 12,5 years of two giant sequoias

Once upon a time a long, long time ago (12,5 years) in a place far, far away (in Holland; Europe), two feet below sea level, two little sequoias started to grow.
And now, 12,5 years later, the sky is the limit…….
The seeds were bought in 2006 in the Grant Village Visitor Center in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park in California, USA. The music is Beethoven Symphony no. 5.

@Otto-cz6by
@Otto-cz6by 4 года назад
@@Nephila23 yes it rains very much here. I meant coast redwoods need more water than giant sequoias. And actually, most of the water they receive comes from fog, which condenses on the trunk, and waters the tree. So, there really isn't any place on the earth that receives enough rainfall for coastal redwoods.

The Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia) is grown in all zones. Zones refer to climate. Extreme environments like low desert and far north present challenges for the sequoias. Specimen sequoias can be found in most climates indicating that the species is remarkably adaptable. A sequoia can suck the ground dry on a warm day. If there is no natural means of replenishing the soil moisture consistently the grower must supplement the sequoias with irrigation. Failure to keep the soil moist results in a dead tree. Sequoias require moist, rich, balanced ph, and well-drained soil. Permanently swampy or muddy soil will not work. For more info: see: www.giant-sequoia.com/faqs/giant-sequoia-landscape-questions/

I think the General Grant Tree in Sequoia NP is the Nation's Christmas Tree in the USA. In Holland we don't have a national christmas tree, but perhaps in 100 years these two trees could become the national christmas trees. Hope uour sprouts will survive ande one day become a christmas tree.

When visiting the Okeefenokee Swamp in Georgia (USA) in the 1990's I picked up some bald cypress seeds and then planted them on the bank of my pond in South Florida. One is now at least 5 feet tall. This does not seem so remarkable except that all of the cypresses in my area are pond cypress which are much, much shorter at maturity. This one will be the giant of the neighborhood. It was an experiment on my part. I had learned that cypress seeds should be planted in soil that will be wet or damp for at least 3 months. I don't own that property any more but I visit the next door neighbor; you can count on me to peek over the fence to see how it's doing.
