Okay, 10 years from now, you may have 2 regrets: 1) you sold the Miata; 2) you did not meet up with Madison and Kayla @2:18 like they told you to. Love your video man. Once you enter the Miata ownership experience, it always holds a special place in your automotive journey.
Been driving my NB since I drove it out the showroom in 2003. I’d never want to drive anything else. 100% stock standard, and it has never broken down over those 20 years.
@@AshToxin 129,000km (80,100 miles) over the 20 years. Doesn’t hurt that for the first 5 years I lived 3km (1.8 miles) from work, and for the last 15, 4km (2.5 miles) from work. Having said that, the alternator did die in the year since I posted this. Still, not a bad record.
My thought process watching the video: - When did I sub to this channel? - Hot damn that is a clean looking NB - The dude is handsome too - Ofc girls want his number Now I am just jealous. I also really like the video! Looking forward to your adventures with the NB.
Great video Gavin! I currently own a 1999 (NB1) Miata, and owned a 1992 (NA) back in the mid 1990s. A few comments for you: (1) if you enjoy the car, and can afford to keep it as a second car, do so. I've had ~35 cars over the past 34 years, and selling my 1992 Miata was my one regret. This led me to embark on a 3 year search (2015-2018) culminating in my purchase of my 1999. I sold my 1992 after heavily modifying it for the track, and then purchasing a Porsche 944 also for track use; since that time I've owned a Boxster, an early 911, and currently a 997.2S... but I still wanted a Miata again. (2) upgrades tires - I replaced the cheap non-name tires with an inexpensive set of Dunlop summers with a 420 treadwear rating - not stickies. Having less stick means lower limits, which means more fun at lower speeds. I did recently change my wheels to 7.5" wide vs the 6.0" factory 15s, and this improved responsiveness greatly. suspension - this summer, after extensive research and some internet debate, I installed Koni Yellow shocks, Tein S-tech springs, and FCM sport bump stops. Unless you are going to spend big $$$ on premium coilovers (that you don't need unless you track extensively) I recommend either this setup or the similar Flyin' Miata package. My car sits about 1" lower, rides very comfortably, doesn't bottom out (and I live in an area with rough, winter-damaged roads). I was originally intending to install aftermarket swaybars, but I'm not sure that I want/need that.
The NB was the first car I bought two years ago. The car was owned for 13 years by a car mechanic who took good care of it and I gave the car to my mother because I didn't had a driving license at the time and wasn't planning to get one. Corona changed everything and I made my license and got a Volkswagen up!, a fun little city car with only 59 bhp.... perfect to learn stick. I live in Germany in the Eifel, with fun twisty narrow country roads and the NB is made for it. It's a normal 1.6 in silver, without any collector's value... which means I can change some things on the NB without losing much value. And for me the 110 hp is enough, most roads are limited to 50, 70 or 100 km/h and in that range the car is so much fun. My mother is retired, she loves sports cars and is not angry with me if I modify it a bit.
Keep it like you said as a 2nd car. I had a 91 for 2 years and sold it. I always regretted that decision. I now own an 04 LS. Never gonna sell it. My 11 year old asked me if she could have it when she turns 16. Nope! Miata is mine for life.
You get my like and sub for the luck you got with the ladies and the beautiful NB! Looks like your mom raised you right, hope you can enjoy the car for years to come!
Revs up. Wind noise. Wind in your hair. Bugs in your teeth is part of the fun!! Ear plugs?? Jesus man. I take my NB on a 4 hour drive to visit a relative often!!! I LOVE that shit!! I live in FL too.
Dude Florida in a Miata is the way to go that sounds so fun 😆 honestly I think my soft top might be misaligned making it have way more wind noise than normal 🙁
I haven’t built up a subscriber base around car stuff. RU-vid tests video recommendations on subscribers first, and I’m guessing this just didn’t do very well so it didn’t push it further. At least that’s my guess.
My NB1 is my first ever car. I love him so much! Everyone always complements my car. I had friends and neighbors asking me if I would ever sell the car even strangers asking how much I bought it for 😂. It was taken great care of. I bought my NB from a local Miata only dealership. It is an automatic though so I got it for cheaper for that reason. Don’t plan on doing any crazy modifications on it, just a roll bar for safety. I like my little guy bone stock. I feel like it makes it unique compared to most Miatas nowadays. 💜
might be an intake issue, the intake changes the way it flows depending on how heavy you are on the accelerator. it may be getting stuck - probably just needs a clean. enjoy the NB - 12 years with mine!
I saw a silver one posted, a 2003. For $3500, really nice condition. Gone in two hours. I messaged the dude and he was like, "Someones already coming down from Cleveland to get it." It's funny cause when I bought a Imola Yellow VW GTI last summer it was like the first time I drove stick. Only spent an hour with a manual. I got to drive the thing home. It was a bit scary. I stalled it almost immediately haha. But it was a cool experience I was like, learning as I went. I frickin miss the thing. I had to sell it to catch up on some bills. I really wanted to keep it. I finally got some proper seats for it and a back seat and a guy drove by and was like, 'You selling that?" and that was it. It was gone. I'm definitely getting a Miata come spring. I'm hoping I'll be able to find a clean NB2, sometime in February. I'm gonna try to find one right before the tax returns come out so the prices are down. Cause in Ohio, no ones looking for a convertible when its 10F outside. I ended up buying an 2019 STi last October when I was making more money then took a pay cut in January, after a few months, so the payments were a bit much. Also I was tired of getting 20mpg so I traded it in for 2018 Audi A4 Premium Plus. I got an auto so. Right now I have no manual car and it's boring. I love the Audi though for road trips, commuting and such. It does a lot of things well and it's super comfy, not very slow (about 5.2 to 60) and it gets 36mpg on the highway cause of the 7th gear. But it's not exactly a drivers car. It took me a few months to figure out rev matching and the timing and such but once you've driven one manual for awhile you can drive like any manual really. We have a lot of nice country roads out here where I live so excited to have something I can enjoy on the backroads. Doesn't have to be fast, just something fun to drive and take everything in.
Keep the MX5, it will keep saving your life when you’re other cars break, and your families cars break and you need to lend it to them. I know from experience. :)
It’s funny, we both have similar stories. I bought my 03 about 6 months ago. About 2 hours away from home, new to stick, had a few nerve racking hiccups with the cruise control. I payed about the same for mine with 145k on it, although it came with a factory matched hardtop (garnet red).
Also, my car had excessive wind noise with the soft top that it wasn’t with the hardtop. You can adjust the soft top latches, but I actually fixed it by pulling the door panels out and bumping up the height of the windows when they’re rolled up. Something to try if that’s ever an issue 👍
One of my second 'proper' cars was an NB MX5 / Miata. Same colour as this one, but 2003, so 16in Wheels vs these 15s. then 'upgraded' it to a Lotus Elise (amazing car), then an Mazda Mk3, M3 Convertible (also pretty damn fine - apart from it not being the coupe) and then a Focus ST. Safe to say i bought another NB Mx5 because out of all those nice Cars I've had, the mk2 Mazda was by far the best balanced driving tool I've owned. the best balance of Speed/Handling/Grip/Practicality out of all of them. Just wish they didn't rust so much!
@@andrewg4412 Because the last gear of the 5 and 6 speed transmission have the same gear translation. So every other gear is just nearer to each other.
I have 2001 NB-6spd and I heard you comment about idle and stalling issues that occur infrequently. IMO, experience tells me you maybe dealing with a cam positioning sensor. This sensor is hard to pin down regarding diagnostics (won't show up) and these things may last for years until it finally fails. The sensor wires for the attachment are engine bay dirty causing your intermittent problem and/or the sensor itself may eventually need replacement. I replaced and haven't looked back...
I got my 88 Toyota truck in 2019 and learned manual on that. this year I bought a 2000 Miata in Sacramento and registered it in Nevada. Also this video popped up at my 6 month anniversary
Nice video, I just bought a NB1 after test driving my friends NB2 who just had it for about a year. I bought it in Germany and I live in Italy because they are about half the price there so I kinda have your same situation with the registration fees. Mine is dark green with black interior, can’t wait do drive it and finally upgrade from my front wheel drive 70 horsepower Alfa Romeo
My first 6 months with an NB. Front brakes seized. Front wheel bearings went. Clutch release bearing went. Water pump got stuff. Drivers window dropped. Exhaust got stolen 😂
Ive had my 02 for 4 years now, i regret buying this car simply because anything else i drive is not even drivable anymore and nothing gives me the any similar feel to my miata, whether its an suv, a bmw, a japanese car, any sedan or whatever i hate driving it. Not to mention co workers compliment on it a lot and wanna go for a drive thinking its a ferrari. It's an absolutely beautiful car with an amazing driving experience that very few cars can match, very reliable, left me stranded a few times but that was simply because i needed cam sensors replaced but other than that it has never let me down.
In the UK you are not allowed to drive a manual gear car unless you have a manual licence, people with an automatic licence are restricted just to autos.
ayyyy a norcal miata fellow! nice video too! I've had my 2004 nb 6spd for a few months as my first car, first upgrades i did were a radiator and fuel filter, full fluid change (basic maintenance). idk if you or anyone else have had this problem but second gear always "grinds" (not a bad grind but i hear a small metal clinking noise and feel something different when i shift to second. Its not irritating but im just curious about it.
I bought a 2003 like 2 weeks ago and i already stopped using it. What i thought would be an issue is actually fine, and all i expected as fun factor is nowhere to be found or below expectation. It's a good backup plan car, though, if my 2 others are being worked on and not usable, this car is able to do point A to point B without too much worries.
@@Gux_xi Nope. Manual 6 speed. Handling is similar to other summer car, acceleration could be decent if it was not so short geared. Same thing for top speed and fuel efficiency. Brakes are decent. It's not a bad car, it's just that it's so overglorified, it's not hard to be disappointed after owning more than 30 cars in my life, of all kinds and brands.
So I’ve heard! I really don’t put many miles on the car currently, but that’s definitely something I could try if I wanted it to be a bit more daily-able
I just got a 2002 SE with 108k miles. Runs perfect. Has a new a top, battery, and tires. No rust, no leak. Get this… I paid $4200. Book value is $7400. Comparable cars are selling for more than $9k. I was blessed. Only think I don’t care for is the banana yellow color tho. 😂🍌🍌🍌
Looking at getting a NB Miata soon but I’m a bit terrified of driving it in the rain/wet roads (I live in FL so it rains pretty much every afternoon in the summer) Been reading a lot of horror stories of people spinning their car out. Has anything like that happened to you?
I haven’t spun out, but I have slid before in a roundabout on new asphalt in heavy rain. It just requires you to be paying attention and know how to react if it does happen. I would not recommend it to someone who texts and drives a lot, is distracted, etc. Having tires with good wet performance will probably affect this a lot too, which mine probably aren’t the best.
Not going to read through all 150 comments so I don’t know if it was answered, but I adjusted my throttle cable and sprayed it with WD-40 and it never had a high idle again.
It happens in really hot situations, and I think you’re right. Last time I noticed the throttle just wasn’t closing the last like 3% and was causing it.
If you buy out of state it's always good to get it appraised. Same thing happened to me with my nb. I needed to pay the tax on the KBB which was $10,000...so it would have come out to around $500 just for the registration. I ended up getting it appraised for $4000 so only ended paying way less. Also they gave me the hardest time about my rear side markers. On the nb they are just reflectors, not lights. He failed me at first and I had to take 30 minutes to explain to three guys how they were never lights and they are never going to be lights 😂 couple google search's later and we passed. Love the car, I have the same color just a 2000.
Going to check out a blue nb Miata this weekend. 124k miles. Guys asking 6900. Hoping to get it down to 6k. What do you guys think? I’m a vw guy so I don’t know much but want a second car that’s convertible and rear wheel next to my k04 mk6 gti
Dude, I'm a cupule beers down but if you ever come to Houston, I will let you drive my 911. Ih've had 5 miata's and 1 911 and they're all a blast. It's an Auto thogu h so that suck.s but offter still stands when i'm sober i'm sure i think
That's a major reason I might just hold onto it until I have the resources to get a daily lol. If i ever get rid of it i'll probably never get one like it again :(
I live in germany and the good thing: nobody knows about the mx5 and you can get one in a nice shape for 3000€-5000€. And there are so many for sale here. Always with a manual transmission. Sadly most of them got the 1.6 engine with only 110hp. If you find a 1.8 its arround 7000€ wich I think is too much for a car like this.
Friend. You stole the car. Good colour combo - I way prefer the black (to beige) interior, and those stock wheels look great. I’d guess that your idling issue is not worth addressing as it’s probably (?) down to extreme temperature. I hope you’re still enjoying the car.
