Bob "Ninja" Poras was in country and responded to the first American casualties from an EFP bomb. An article found on the "The Carlson Law Firm," describes what an EFP is. Dubbed “superbombs” because of their lethality, an Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) is a type of improvised explosive device (IED) that has had enormous effects on the U.S. Military in war zones. EFPs are self-forging warheads designed to effectively penetrate armor and fire in a way similar to cannons. When fired, the explosive charge deforms a concave metal plate into a slug or rod shape. The shape forms as the plate accelerates toward an intended target. EFPs can breach tank armor 300 feet away. Additionally, these types of IEDs detonate with a force capable of traveling more than a mile per second.

EFPs are legitimately terrifying and effective up to several hundred yards away. Not difficult to build, but a lot of the ones in Iraq were supplied to the insurgent groups by the Iranian military.

I remember seeing this convoy of humvees on a highway and the efp hit the lead vic from the passenger side, blew in the armored doors through the cab and all the way out the drivers side taking everything with it including the gunners lower half. The whole cab was destroyed and there were no doors left on the thing at all. Didn't even slow down the vehicle it happened so fast. The vic just kept on rolling along until it went off the highway after a while. F*cking nightmare.

I remember June 2006 2-6 1AD comes into theater during the start of the surge, my team was operating in As Sadiyah Baghdad when the commander for one of the companies showed up to our site and asked to do his first patrol in the neighborhood. Turned down a route close to Schweb area of Baghdad when the patrol stopped. Thinking it was only a 60mm IED that they hit. We dismounted and moved forward toward the company commanders vic and a hole the size of a coffee can was through the TC's door. I believe it was an inline 6. Insurgents testing out TTPs before they figured it out. The carnage is unforgettable. That poor company got hit several more times as I believe they lost their XO and the incoming XO for the Battalion on a RIP-TOA near Check Point 540 driving south onRt. Jackson coming out of the IZ. My team responded to that incident as well. EFP's definitely changed the TTP's for the worse.

Got to Iraq in Mid 2007 for a 15 month'r or until complete.... the pre-mission briefs for our AO (Basara to Baghdad) had the checkpoints on Tampa from 23B to 17A(into and out of CSC Scandia almost to Kalsu) as the hottest EFP areas in the country. It was nuts seeing all the Casualty reports. Our TTPs to combat this was variations of our Rhino lengths (Box in the front with 2 diesel glow plugs) we had one Rabbit Vehicle that was a 915 with a 30' Rhino. Surprisingly the best way to defeat the EFPs when detonated was hanging a secondary up armored glass under the windows. My best guess was that the glass cooled the EFP enough that it was more difficult to penetrate the steel after passing through the glass. Fuk Iran for providing these EFP and other Caches.... should have been delt with accordingly

One joked that insurgents somehow got ahold of a Tank Sabot round. You're right about using the glass mounted on the doors and what not. They seemed to work. During my second toune in late 07 everyone had extra glass mounted on their doors

Took an EFP to the legs back inside an 1114. Clean cut, the whole journey has been a blast!🥁 The bullet proof glass did stop the EFP’s. We installed an extra window under the original window for extra protection but no window opening anymore This EFP had a garage door opener laser as a trigger.

EFPs are insane, EOD has it bad enough but the Combat Engineers when they are route clearing have no idea where they are but after a while they came up with an idea so the EFP could pick up on the heat signature. They had a long metal pole that was attached to the vehicle extending out and it had a device they called the Rhino or as the soldiers called it the hot box on it and was made to attract the EFP away from the vehicle. It was a counter IED system but it didn't take long for the enemy to figure out a way to defeat it. Before the Rhino was made it was the actual soldiers who came up with the idea and made one and at the end of the pole it had an ammo box with hot glow plugs in it that attracted the EFP. The technology has come a long way since 2006.

Efps were the scariest in Iraq 07-08 for myself , disarmed a couple thanks to good Intel. Never got hit with one but saw many vehicles that had and they were devastating. One in particular penatrated a Buffalo through its v-hull and created massive overpressure in the belly that dislodged every floor panel and opened every hatch on the roof of that Buffalo

I think the problem for most units was they ALL had 6' Rhinos.... All Haj had to do was adjust the angle accordingly. We varied our length of each vehicle and ran a dual rabbit. One was a 915 with a 30' rhino and the other an ASV with like 18-20' rhino. Rest of our Route Security or Convoy Security rigs varied from 8'-20'
@sgtbender1335
@sgtbender1335 Год назад
The speed of your vehicle vs the set timing delay of the charge, and whether or not your rhino was actually functional. Also, the early versions were too weak. They tripled the strength of them, and they began to work beautifully, but you had to constantly change your mounted ttps, or they would simply adjust their timing to get the hit anyway.
