I've carried one of those in the Brazilian Marine Corps boot camp a few years ago. The Brazilian Navy acquired around 15k of the FN-49 rifles in .30-06 in the early 50's as the FS-49 (Fuzil Semiautomático 49) and they saw extensive use in many theaters, such as the Dominican Republic civil war in 1965 (where the Brazilian Marines deployed with US Marines). We use them in the early stages of boot camp to this day in order to avoid breaking the M16s in the hands of raw recruits, since they're mostly deactivated (with very few exceptions that are currently in the hands of the Martial Band pipers and parade units).

Among the hundreds of guns I have owned over the past 50 years, was an Argentine navy model in 308 with detachable box mags. While it was in mint condition, I had a bit of trouble getting the magazines to fit and feed properly. Once we did, it was a fun gun to shoot. My son had an FAL and I must say, I liked the FN49 better. His FAL had a metal foregrip which would get extremely hot out in the sun while the wood of the FN49 remained cool no matter how much we shot it. This is the same reason I have a CETME wood foregrip on my G3.

We kept that SAFN "as standard issue" in the Belgian Air Force (together with the Thompson M1A1 and the FM35!) untill about 1988! In think the rifle and the FM35 cartridges were the 7,92 Mauser... I think! they were longer than the .308 Nato ) Then came the FNC with folding stock (in 5,56) . For the ABL logo, say (in French-Dutch) "Armée Belge-Belgische leee..ger)

I love that cocking indicator -- you don't see it, you feel it. Perfect! Soldiers shouldn't need light to tell whether their rifles are ready to fire or not. Nor should they be looking anywhere but toward the enemy, where he is or where he may be.

A lot of Canadian signage does things with their two languages, English and French, similar to the "ABL" monogram on this rifle. My personal favorite is the ice hockey arena in Ottawa, which used to be called the Corel Centre several sponsors back. Because the name in French is the same two words in the other order, they painted a circular design at center ice that just said COREL CENTRE COREL CENTRE over and over again, so that it read both ways at the same time. (It's now the Centre Canadian Tire Centre, which doesn't trip off the tongue quite as readily. :)

Where did he mention that the EM-2 used FG42 molds? I cannot find it, but that does not seem correct to me because they do not share the same operating system nor cartridge nor magazine nor geometry, so how would it use the same molds? I've shot FN49's in three calibres, including an Argentine 7.62x51 conversion & a Belgian auto. I'm a big lad & actually found automatic fire reasonably accurate but I doubt a 5'6" 140lb conscript of the time would agree.

Well, you just described me hahaha Altough i wasn't a conscript, but i'm 1,70m & i weighted aroud 66kg (143lb) when i've joined. Of course i didn't fired the full auto version, but i had the chance to shoot one of the few still activated FN49's we had in .30-06 and my first tought was: "wow, is this really .30-06?" I bet that in full auto is a whole diferent story, since there's no recoil spring at all, just like an M14 (wich i never had the chance to shoot), but ofc with an even spicier round.

As a proprietor of one and knowing the naming it is not an afn but still safn , safn meant saive automatique fabrique nationale belgique , the selector has a S for simple and an R for rafale as fully automatique is a misnomer since its really calld serial fire or rafale in french. Have also a pdf copy of the original manual where its simply called fn 49 as it was officially and in the manual its marked as single or serial fire versions , no sa or a suffix , thats added wrongly later.

Hello sir. I have been trying to get information on the topic of hearing protection in firearms. I know that it in modern civilian contexts hearing protection is heavily emphasized. But people have been using firearms and cannons for hundreds of years. Given that one shot from a firearm can lead to permanent hearing deficits/loss how did our predecessors deal with the noise that firearms generate? If they just took the noise without hearing protection, wouldn't there be a pandemic of hearing loss after major wars/conflicts? I have been trying to search around for this topic but I'm not finding anything or anyone talking about it.

i would argue that an assult rifle has to be readily point able such as breaching and clearing a building or assulting a position, a full power cartridge I'd argue is still a battle rifle even with select fire and becomes a light support weapon in the context of it being explicitly geared for use as such, while still being far more readily usable as an infantry rifle than an actual light machinegun.

FN49 Belge … “L” = sigle de Léopold 3 porté par les armées fabriquées sous son règne. Ce fusil était mon arme de service de 1971 à 1974 à L’école technique de la Force aérienne Belge de Saffraenberg . En calibre 30.06 pour la Belgique

The only thing these three systems have in common is that they all fire a bullet when the trigger is pulled.

@@lefr33man He is actually saying that it looks so similar to all three of those self loading semi autos that it looks like all of them combined.

@@esotericschizoidoccultconjurer Ah yes, the famous lee-enfield self-loading rifle. Also, they look nothing alike. If anything, the FN49 is more akin (in appearance only) to a mas 44/49.

@@lefr33man Well there actually is, interestingly enough, the Turner SMLE which happens to be a proper self loading semi auto Lee Enfield which had come during ww2 as an experimental prototype, it had also been an improvement upon the Howell which was also an experimental prototype self loading semi auto Lee Enfield during ww1.

Since it fired a full size cartridge, not an intermediate cartridge, it isn’t an assault rifle. It is an automatic rifle. The M-14 that he mentioned is also an automatic rifle.

I cant find any information online about Dieudonne Saive being extracted from Belgium in 1941. I would love to know where you found the information as im sure it was an interesting story.

Is there any correlation between this and the MAS-49? I see a lot of similarities between the two in designation and design language. Granted one is piston driven and one is DI, so it may just be coincidental serendipity of designs of the time.
