In 1918's Tarzan Of The Apes, Elmo Lincoln became the first man ever to vocalize Tarzan's blood-curdling battle cry, despite it being a silent movie. Years later, he showed up on TV to show off his version of the cry, unintentionally revealing just how terrible it truly was.

That "Tarzan yell" was perfect for the silent movie era. My ears are bleeding after hearing that. Edgar Rice Burroughs must be turning in his grave right now. No one even comes close to Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan yell. His is the best by far.

It's been many decades since I read the books and I'm rusty on what things are called in the language of the Mangani, but I think I remember Sabor as the generic name for any lioness and Numa for a male lion. But I might be mixing the lioness up with leopards.

Lincoln played Tarzan just three times between 1918 and 1921, all before talkies, so the "yell" was silent.

At 34 years later, that puts this scene at 1952. The same year that Elmo Lincoln died of a heart attack. You can tell here he was not well and way too out of breath for all the more physical activity that was involved in this scene. Have to wonder if the battle cry in 1918 was not quite a bit better than this.

Myth: Johnny Weissmuller dubiously created the Tarzan yell. Truth: he technically popularised it! Misconception: the first Tarzan yell is made of sound effects. Truth: it is technically human-made!

To be fair, Elmo Lincoln was an old man at this point. I'm not going to knock him for being paunchier or for his jungle scream sounding weaker than it probably did back in his Tarzan days. That being said, his scream is definitely nowhere near as powerful as Johnny Weissmuller's. That's what instantly comes to mind when you think of Tarzan.
@avenger2807
@avenger2807 8 лет назад
+Reid Mason I agree. Be fair to Elmo Lincoln. The first Tarzan film was from 1918. If this clip was 34 years later, that would put in 1952. He would have certainly been much older.

@a.j.medialover
@a.j.medialover 3 года назад
Well, I haven't read the books, but I think the yell in the 2016-movie so far is the closest to the descriptions I've heard. This one sounds a bit guttural, too (as it's originally described), but it doesn't really capture the feel of 'blood-curdling' as well as the 2016-version. (and I know this clip is filmed 70 years ago, and I know the actor was the first to ever do a Tarzan call in a movie (despite being a silent film) + the fact that he was old at this point and this was probably the most guttural roar people could make at that time, so the latest in film media may be a bit of an unfair comparison)

Another surprisingly little-known truth: technically, there could've been four actors credited for playing the titular character in (the first official Tarzan movie ever, a 1918 film called) Tarzan of The Apes! They were: Gordon Griffith, Kamuela C. Searle, Stellan Windrow (actually a stuntman at that time!), and Elmo Lincoln himself.
@davideversole9767

Searle wasn't in the 1918 film. He was in "The Son of Tarzan," around 1920-21.
