In 1839, Hippolyte Bayard invented photography. And nobody cared.

People usually associate the birth of photography with Louis Daguerre’s Daguerreotype. His process became the first widespread method of photography after France revealed it to the world on August 19, 1839. But there were actually multiple inventors of photography, and one of them was an amateur French tinkerer named Hippolyte Bayard. Even before Daguerre’s process was revealed, Bayard had achieved photographic results.
However, François Arago, the chair of the French Academy of Sciences, overlooked Bayard’s accomplishment and elevated Daguerre’s instead. And as a protest to this perceived injustice, Bayard took a self-portrait depicting himself as an unidentified man in the Paris Morgue who took his own life. This image is not only the first staged photo, it’s also an early example of photography depicting something non-literal and symbolic, laying the groundwork for the medium to be used as a form of creative expression.

Bayard’s method for exposing an image and developing it is more akin to the processes for film photography today, so in the long run he won I guess.
@Seele2015au
@Seele2015au 2 года назад
Unlike Talbot's process, Bayard's process did not produce a negative that can be used to produce an unlimited number of positive prints, but a direct positive process, making each picture unique. If one needed a unique picture, daguerréotype gives that extra quality, so when all is said and done, Bayard's process, like the daguerréotype, was a dead end.

As a fellow upcoming photographer, I can relate to this video a little further. You see, this whole commotion screams envy and resentment. It also screams an opportunistic ill minded dude. These are some of the early feelings of competition we still see in today's photography world. Many of the local togs, short for photographers, are super envious. I get that competition drives the market, but this is the personal side of it. What photographers, like me, actually experience. By the way, love the research @Vox , its phenomenal.
