In two previous videos I shared the story of a reel to reel tape that found its way to me after more than 50 years of obscurity. The tape, which was purchased at an estate sale in a small Iowa town in the late 80s, was given to me two years ago by a fan of my channel. It was created backstage at a 1967 Johnny Cash concert in Seattle, Washington by KAYO radio DJ Bobby Wootten and contains lost interviews with some of the biggest and most influential stars of the 20th Century. It was created to be aired over Armed Forces Radio to the troops in Vietnam. In this video, we will present interviews with two Country Music Hall of Fame alumni, The Statler Brothers and The Carter Family, as they existed in 1967 - with Mother Maybelle Carter and her daughters.
Maybelle, of course, along with Sara and AP Carter, was there at the so-called “Big Bang of Country Music” recording sessions in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927, the same sessions that also launched the career of Jimmie Rodgers. Maybelle and her Gibson L5 archtop provided the rhythmic pulse at the very heart of this new popular musical form, and The Carter Family are rightly recognized as some of the very first popular music super stars, forging their career at a time when ad-supported radio airplay and record sales were brand new industries.
Maybelle Carter's influence on Western popular music cannot possibly be overstated, and to have an interview with her on this tape is particularly cool. So we'll begin with a short interview with the Statler Brothers before moving on to The Carter Family. I hope you enjoy!
Special thanks to Dave Massey for donating this tape and sharing its wonderful contents with the world. I am proud to be the custodian of it and am honored to be the one chosen to digitize and preserve it for posterity.

I'm in my 50s and had a tape of the Carters with AP Mabel and her cousin. The originals. That's what original country was. Mabel & June also great on the auto harp. I met June & Carlene Carter at the original Johnny Cash museum in Hendersonville not far from Twitty City in 1986. They posed for a picture. Gracious when they seen Canadian flags on our camera strap.

I heard that the Statler Brothers felt bad for taking the Grammy award from the poor young Beatles, and that they would pass the hat around and get them a little something around Christmas. A real Class Act.👍

An absolute Treasure! Thanks for sharing Dave and Brad. I need to dig out my copy of Oh Brother, Where art Thou? and the Down from the Mountain album. I was fortunate to have seen the Down from the Mountain concert tour, when they came through Oregon. Amazing artistry. These folks are NOT Country “Bumpkins”.

I inherited something similar, it was not anyone famous, but my great grandma talking about what she remembered from her mother when Sherman came here in SC. I'll leave the cuss words out. I don't remember her much, but it's nice too have something like this. Recorded on the cheapest red Radio Shack cassette the used to make. I've been able to make it fairly legible.

So awesome! A blast from my past. I'm so glad I grew up with this music and also had siblings that enjoyed rock. I still love my old country roots. In fact I'm not fond of new country, only the old classics.

Many years ago, whenever I went to a garage sale or an auction or something like that I always looked for old boxes of tape. And usually you can pick them up really cheap. You never know what you’re going to find in those. I found some pretty interesting things, nothing like this but it’s still fascinating to see what might be in there.

Had the original recording been done at 7 1/2 instead of 3 3/4 the tape would have been cleaner. Of course that could be a second generation recording as well. (Took years to figure out reel to reel recording). Still nice interviews. I do miss my reel to reel. Had a nice Akai 4 channel. It would record in Surround Sound, but you had to record all 4 tracks at once. (Then I learned how to "Ping pong" the recordings. That's when I discovered the faster you recorded the cleaner the sound.) Sad part is, with Digital no matter how much you EQ etc, you just don't get that warm analog saturation distortion. I've come close. I remember when I first went digital I had every thing set up, just right, or so I thought. I hit the first chord on my guitar...no crunch, just a real brassy sound. LoL. Took all day resetting everything. Now they're going back to analog....

This was recorded at 7 1/2, the video shows that and Brad said this 'IS" the master tape. The original machine however may not have been the best recorder in the world and who knows what brand the tape is.... It all adds to the equation. I'm glad Brad didn't use noise reduction on this, it's good to hear the recording 'as is' on the tape.
