The key term here is “legal”, everyone goes thru regulations that they must meet within code standers, but the bigger picture here is that 3D printing is about to disrupt a market that hasn’t been touched for years.

I hear ya! I was a Realtor and that bothered me too-- although there are good Realtors out there. I hope Zillow, Redfin, Opendoor, etc will disrupt the industry, and then Realtors can be hired as consultants (like lawyers) with hourly fees on an as-needed basis, to get rid of the crazy commission structure. I install equipment in concrete as part of my job. Chiseling an electric box into concrete with existing conduit behind it would be pretty easy, You can use a blade style cold chisel and cut right through it, grind it out or rotary tool it out. Most of what works for drywall also works on concrete, just uses different materials for the blades and wheels.

Thoreau once commented on how the natives lived often times more comfortably in their wigwams than people who paid the majority of their income for housing. I suspect this is more an issue of greed than finding some way to do it cheaply. There are people who live off rents, taxes and municipal bond income as opposed to working. If we haven't figured out housing in over 100 years then there just isn't the will to do so. I'm sure the structure Thoreau allegedly built at Walden would be legislated out of existence and zoned to death just like tiny houses. We can always hope though.

As a painter I can tell you this, every, every square inch of those walls needs to be finished. All those tiny gaps, grooves, need a finishing coat to smooth them out or the mildew and mold problems will be substantial. In a cold climate the moisture and wicking with freeze\thaw cycles will tear that up in a decade or less, spalling will be the issue. Without some rebar structure in those walls, I'll pass. The sand bag style of homes understood the need for something as simple as barbed wire to help stabilize the structure. Perhaps a secondary wire feed behind the print head that deposits a flexible material (I've heard even some plastics can be used to help stabilize concrete versus metal rebar) would help. It will be interesting to see how it holds up to winter cycles.

@pineychristian
@pineychristian 3 года назад
Idgarad , Doubt it will have structural issue. If you see in video the entire floor is concrete. Most likely it sits on a monolithic concrete slab which is heavily reinforce with rebar and wire mesh. If your not sure what that is than look it up. Once your base strong nothing else moves or settles cause the base can't move. Mold ? You need moisture and organic materials ( food for mold) concrete can't mold but if you have organic materials on concrete in the right conditions than mold can grow. Doubt it will have a mold issues. I think you need to stick to painting and leave the big boy stuff to the right people....

@@stevethomas5209 You think they could have designed the house with two baths, maybe make a bedroom smaller or move a hallway. To add a bath now is very affordable, to add one later as your family grows, is $$$, bad planning is why so many people are not financially stable. People that have money and do well this is not by accident, the more you have the faster it can go. One mistake these days, one medical incident ends that American dream. So with that in mind, bullet proof your life young, plan, stick to that plan but never, I mean never blame another person for their drive and or their desire upset you. I wake up, and I use every second of my day and I only sleep 5 hours a day. Why? Why does one eat? Why does one sleep as they do? You see it as greed I assume. Hmm I give people the benefit of the doubt, Ive met very few greedy and evil people. I also dont assume people that sleep 8 hours as lazy, I also dont see people of humble means as dumb or less then. @HistoryGe3k
@HistoryGe3k 3 года назад
Quick Question - if you are using concrete as your main building component, are you also using steel reinforcement inside the concrete or are you using tie-downs? Usually when you build with hollow cement blocks (called bessa blocks in Australia) you will also put long tie downs (long steel rods with a thread for top bolts) from the slab to the top of the cement block/brick wall. Sometimes you may even fill in the hollow cement blocks with concrete for additional strength. Are you using steel reinforcement inside the slab? Also, are you using a separate floating slab for the external walls (separate to the main floor slab)? The building method prior to the 80s was to lay a slab foundation and then build the frame and external brick wall on the main slab. When the ground moved it often resulted in a damaged main slab as the main slab was supporting the load bearing outer walls. The way to fix it was to dig under the main slab, lift up the slab and then fill in under the damaged slab with cement. The external brick wall often had to be demolished and rebuilt. As you can imagine it is an expensive process. Having a floating slab separate to the main slab solved this problem. What are you guys doing with the slab and the load bearing walls?

I saw you mentioned Puerto Rico, when talking about bringing down cost. PR already builds with concrete and houses are usually bellow 180k. So a large majority of houses here are concrete houses and the pricing is much lower than 299,000. A 300k house is a huge house with a lot of terrain. So yes, you might find a couple wood houses in areas were people are squatting. But all new and most old constructions are all in concrete. Building with wood makes no sense here because of hurricanes. Also California has a lot of earthquakes and concrete is a lot more rigid than wood. So any major quake can badly damage the structure. Besides that the 3d printed house looks amazing and the technology is truly fascinating.

Whether the loan process differs from traditional homes, if there is hesitation or excitement among bankers about the new gen-buyers who walk in and says, "I found a 3D printed house I want to buy." The future is either, "Lead, follow, or get out the way".

@ 6:24 The 50-year warranty - he was so serious when he said that. I'm laughing my ass off. In Eastern Europe we have left-over structures from the Roman Empire - they gave us a 2000-year warranty. The buildings are still standing. We are still using them. I'd say the warranty held up pretty good. Call us when the US warranty has at least 2 zeroes behind the number, we'll talk. Oh, and in the meantime, the Chinese are already 3d-printing 2-storey luxury houses. But it's so cute watching you guys being proud of firmly staying behind the curve. Keep it up, you'll catch up. @patricknguyen2982

@@InMooseWeTrust You don’t think we need that much energy to process and transport concrete to the site. Everything needs giant engines and energy for transportation such as food, clothes,...etc. There’s no perfect solution, one solution will lead to another problem. Also, concrete isn’t a friendly eco material to the environment, it absorbs oxygen around the area making it harder to breath.
