Hi everyone! My name is Deyanira Cavazos and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in the state of Texas. The pandemic was actually good for business for me lol. I worked agency for yearrrrs doing 60 hour weeks trying to see clients on the side. I remember take a leap after condensing tons of research and trial and error. Honestly, there wasnt alot of mentorship. It was such a hopeless feeling. I got really strategic and girl i made 6 figures my first year in PP working 3 or 4 days a week. Im still doing it and now even scaling my business. Its so hard. But worth it!! No one ever taught how to start a business or better yet make money. I love what you do in this space to encourage others!! I am working towards helping clinicians in my own way.

Even just in Practicum and internship. Being an unpaid intern working in agencies and treatment centers as the lowest person on the totem pole, these places crank up the pressure to squeeze all the free labor they can get out of us while simultaneously treating us like hot garbage, meanwhile we’re working with clients that have complicated diagnoses in what is often a very stressful toxic environment. The exploitation is insane.

I’m praying I can learn how to do what you did. I also live in a small south texas border town and I work in community mental health , which really brings me down because it seems it’s all about money and numbers, but not really about clients healing which is all I want to focus on

@@Keep_On_Growing sorry I am so late on responding! I am wanting to become a mental health therapist, and watching your videos confirms that my end goal is having my own virtual practice. I relate so much to not wanting my work to be a "family," being able to be my authentic self instead of a work persona, and the anxiety around asking for time off. I also hate how therapists and social service workers are treated by employers. It's really not fair to anyone or sustainable. Thank you for the inspiration and realness!!

I'm glad I discovered your channel & that this is the 1st video I watched. I just graduated with a MS/MFT so I'm applying to take the LMFT exam soon (in GA). So while we're not on the exact same path, it is similar and a lot of what you addressed is relatable - as far as pay for new clinicians, social media presence, and being your authentic self. Being new to the field, I've had challenges in all 3 areas. Thanks for putting out great content!!

This is really helpful! Starting grad school in the fall and have wondered if having a youtube channel is "acceptable" or "frowned upon", how comfortable or uncomfortable I might be sharing where I go to school, etc..... Will definitely listen to that podcast episode!

when you are working through telehealth in your private practice, do you get credit for supervisor hours through the platform you work? also, do LPC get paid more through the same platform, or do they get paid the same as the LCP-A's?

Hi! Yes, so I do my weekly hour logs that my supervisor signs when we meet for supervision and I input the time spent doing direct and indirect hours in the same way that I would if I were working for another agency. And if you open your own practice as a Texas LPC-Associate you determine your price. I determined mine based on my expenses and the caseload I felt comfortable with. If you work for someone else you will find that LPC-Associates make significantly less, which is why once the laws changed I decided to work for myself. But depending on what you’re looking for there are hospitals and centers that offer insurance benefits and better pay it all just depends on what you want.

My exact question! Based on this answer, seems like you can be working for yourself AND getting those supervised hours towards licensure?? That's amazing! Just a great way to get the hours you need remotely on top of working for someone else's practice if you needed insurance. Get it, lady!!

I'm truly happy for you! Congrats on being self employed 🤗🤍 I hv a few questions though...Just wondering if it's possible to work with kids for an agency right out if grad school? Also is it possible to get paid? Also, I'd love to go right into private practice BUT I know that just can't happen bc you need 3000 hours. Lastly, do the typical 600 practicum hours in grad school count towards the 3000 needed for licensure? Any help with this would mean so much bc I'm so scared of doing this blindly & there's no way to shadow a LPC

Hi! Thank you so much! Yes it is possible to do it post grad, I worked with children, adolescents, and adults so you can definitely do that at an agency or at someone else’s practice and get paid for it. Not sure if you’re from Texas because here in Texas LPC-Associates can now open and run their own private practice, while being supervised by an LPC-S as you get your 3,000 hours. And sadly no the hours we do during grad school don’t count toward those 3,000 hours. Definitely check out the BHEC website with the requirements if you’re from Texas or your states licensing board website because I completely agree that it can be confusing. All these questions are things that the supervisor you hire will be helping you with and discussing with you. If you’re still in grad school definitely email your professor(s) any questions you have to. I hope this helps though☺️🤍

Thanks so much for this! I'm currently still working on Bachelors. Apparently from what I've learned speaking to many LPC's, it's hard to get those hours & you usually hv to work at shitty places. It's interesting to know that in Texas you could open your own place as a ALPC. Here in Louisiana we don't have that, but I've heard of PLPC's..they just charge less. I've had some say that you very rarely get paid till fully licensed 😔 If that's the case I can't do it bc I can't afford. I'm currently trying to reach out to graduates that went to the school I'm hoping to go to & hope to get more insight on the whole PLPC thing. Thank you for all your help & for being so inspirational 🤍🤍 Btw the way you spend your off days is almost exactly like mine. Walks in the park & Barnes & Noble is life lol 🌳📖🥰

You can still work in the mental health field with your bachelor’s as a casemanager, facilitator, liaison, coordinator, or at a school so that could definitely be something worth trying first because everyone’s different and you might end up liking that.😊 I hope others in the program you want to be in can give you some insight 🤍
