Just like last year I planned to make this comparison video considering there we significant changes to the main camera lens to the iPhone this year. This is intended to be a fun exercise into just how far cameras have gotten on phones but this year feels like the first year something has changed. The scope of this video changed as I was editing these images and you'll have to watch to find out why.

Other than professional use (being advertisement, etc) Phone cameras are more than enough for every day people.

@@Perceptence True, but also the majority of people do not need that "perfect" bokeh and/or zoom, that's why I said for the majority of people, if not using pictures for commercial/professional use. A good camera phone is more than enough for your vacations. I do own a Canon Rebel and with a 50mm 1.5 lens I can see the huge diference, but for vacations with the family my iPhone is enough.

I absolutely love the quality of the photos and videos especially with the 48 MP camera. You made my day! "Work was subpar" because of using a phone - for sure... . And "financially pressured" to buy a used MFT with two or three decent lenses which will outperform ANY Smartphone because even those can do shots no smartphone can do - at a price which is a THIRD or HALF the price of an iPhone 14?? Get real - you"re too lazy for serious photography which starts at taking more gear with you and ends with knowing your gear. BUT: THAT is perfectly FINE. As the best camera is that you have at the moment you want to take a picture... PS: I have a even more serious problem - Smartphone manufacturerers think that even their cheapest model must have at least two back facing cameras... I just need one to take QR codes. For real prictures I have my MFT gear with me.
@BartechTV
@BartechTV Год назад
@@kaptnwelpe5322 Exactly. Any camera, even a cheap used Micro Four Thirds camera like a Panasonic G7 or GX80 for $250 absolutely blows the iPhone 14 Pro out of the water, there's simply no comparison. Detail, dynamic range, color science, sharpness... a $250 used G7 wins in spectacular fashion in every category.

For a casual travel photographer I would recommend that you consider buying Sony RX10 mark IV as a partner to your iPhone. It has a tremendous zoom capabilities and a very sharp Zeiss lens. My own experience proves that it will surpass by far what any phone can offer while traveling.
@kaptnwelpe5322
@kaptnwelpe5322 Год назад
Give a used Panasonic GF2, GX1 or an Olympus Pen PL a try, with some decent small mid-range lenses. Costs nothing compared to your iPhone and will take pictures your iPhone can only dream of. BTW: even if MFT lenses are interchangable - try to use the same brand as the body as the colours might be different in subtle ways if mixed... . PS: avoid bodies which have only an iPod like scroll wheel. The real fun of taking photograhps begins when having at least ONE real weel to control aperture and exposure compensation - either switchable by a button (Pen PL) or clicking the wheel (GF2 GX1) itself...
@kaptnwelpe5322
@kaptnwelpe5322 Год назад
@@MaxusMV Every real camera will surpass a smartphone which has NO way of blurring the background. That was "Hidden" in this video as landscape photographers try to use an aperture that everything is in focus - which is a non-issue for smartphones...
@MaxusMV
@MaxusMV Год назад
@@kaptnwelpe5322 Computational photography makes wonders and most modern smartphones can do the so called portrait photos with quite a decent bokeh. I suggested Sony RX 10 IV as an example that proves that you can’t beat physics. Even the best telephoto lens in Samsung Galaxy s22 Ultra is not a match to 24 -600 optical zoom.

When using the ProRAW profile, you can adjust the HDR effect using the slider. Setting it to zero sort of emulates the other Apple enhanced profile. The ProRAW files are really big!! My approach is to shoot in 48MP ProRAW, edit in LR, then convert to HEIC by saving to a very large TIFF (~300MB) and then using shortcuts to convert to HEIC and delete the TIFF resulting in file usually less than 10MB. Difficult to see any significant difference so I usually delete the ProRAW. HEIC conversions directly from the camera (via Halide) or DNG conversions look like the over sharpened files you displayed.

I am mainly a wildlife photographer and for that carry a tele-focal lenses and therefore something like a 400mm will be mounted on my Sony A1, but sometimes see landscapes when out which I like to shoot, but don’t want to carry around a wide angle lens as well for very occasional use - so for that having high quality wide lens on a iPhone 14 Pro is a real boon. Interesting concept. I noticed that you had an older 16-35mm lens with adapter on the Canon R5. Yet, the main camera on iphone 14pro is a prime lens. I wonder what the results would be if you had used a low 20's prime on R5 with excellent optics. 16-35mm is a challenging lens to make with razor sharp optics. Moreover, even if everything else was equal in terms of image quality, a zoom lens gives R5 a huge advantage over an iphone, as the latter's 13mm lens is paired with a sensor that is significantly inferior to that of its 23mm main camera. I can't wait for iphone to have a two or three periscope zoom lenses each with a best sensor...perhaps in 2030.

There is clearly a big difference when you study the details, to me the fine details on the iPhone look a bit like "oil paint" and the DSLR draws them very sharply - but the question is, in what situation does this difference really make matter? When I pull my head just 1 meter from the screen I can barely tell a difference. So for most applications apart from professional photography it's insane what you can achieve with a smart phone.

You actually included some "regular" images so we can see the difference between snapshots and raw images + lightroom just like I requested. So awesome man I really appreciate that 🙏🏽 🤙🏽

Regular ones are crazy oversharpened and just crap as result. Raw is much better, but in terms of detailedness, it's still far from actual big sensor and big glass. I'm not sure how much edited those shots were, but I would highly doubt that iPhone would capture correct color shades too. And while iPhone is fine for certain shots, it's expensive and nowhere close to actual optically captured images. If you want a pleasant bokeh and other optical effects, iPhone completely falls apart, also auto mode sucks, low light shots are garbage and so many other things are just simply low end. In many ways it's actually worse than much cheaper simple compact point and shoot camera. So while it's certainly not bad at certain things, it's not really a replacement for actual camera. And while it can certainly work well for learning and amateur photography, once you want to try something else, you will need an upgrade.

Wow, a really interesting video. I upgraded from the 11 to the 14 and it awesome. I have done full videos with just the iPhone 14. A great tool and I have all my Nikons and GoPros. I was able to relate to where you were shooting as I live in Montrose. Great video!😀👍

Really interesting. That new 48MP sensor makes a real difference. Hopefully next year the 2 other Iphone sensors will be upgraded as well. As for the processed Iphone images it seems they are just maximising dynamic range which can be ok in some circumstances but as your fantastic edits show it can be done a lot better. That together with allowing 48MP jpgs/heic output is all that is missing

I think before 8K recording they need to concentrate on getting decent 4K. The 4K from my iPhone 14 Pro is significantly worse than 4K from my $200 used Micro Four Thirds camera from 7 years ago. Not even in the same league.

Great video. It’s not in the budget but if a 14 Pro were then I’d probably never take my 75-300mm lens off, since that’s all I’d ever need to take my Olympus out for!

The only reason I carry around my PowerShot G1X Mk3 is for the 3x optical zoom which uses an APS-C sensor capable of producing beautiful natural bokeh throughout the focal range, and the Canon colours are natural without the slightly HDR look you get from the iPhone. But at 24mm I have to admit the main sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro sometimes does a better job and you have 48mp to play with compared to 24.2mp on the Canon. Just need the same sensor behind the telephoto lens now.

Great video,, thank you for comparing those photos side by side to see so much details compared. I also compare by myself DSLR and some phones from family members to see what is worth. I would like to ask something. I was about to replace my camera, 10 years old Nikon D5000 with something new like Fujifilm X-T30 or S-10 but I also need to replace my phone this year. I was thinking if it´s worth to buy something like Pixel 7 Pro / S22 Ultra or IP14 Pro and skip DSLR completelly. I am amateur photographer who only shots mostly on automatic, most of the time landscape during my numerous hiking local trips. Do you think these phones are good enough to see great pictures with great details even on monitor/TV and forget about buying new DSLR completelly? Thanks for any input.

@AlexArmitage
@AlexArmitage Год назад
Thank you! I wish I spent more time answering that because more MP does NOT mean better image quality. At all. I should have said that in the video and skimmed over it. It's the quality of the MP that matters and in this case, the quality is pretty dang high

Thanks Alex! This was an excellent study of both cameras. I really appreciated the detail and explanation to your experiment and outcomes. I am using your video to make my decision to buy the 14 Pro max. I shoot raw no my Cannon. I really thought I would appreciate the Raw feature on the I phone. After seeing your video - Wow - I was really surprised. And to be honest, if I had just seen the "out of the phone" shots only, I probably would have passed on it. But seeing what you could do with the Raw photos, it is worth the money. Thanks again!🙏
