The fit and 50 transformation story
Today I'm going to share my story of how I got into shape and became Fit and 50 starting right back at the beginning, how this young stud turned into an overweight man in his 30’s, eventually striving to become fit at 45. It took 2 years of training to get shredded for the first time.
I’ll Include how I gained the motivation to continue to train right up until now and what is driving me to keep training for the rest of my life.
One of the questions I was asked when I said I was going to do this video, was, if I was athletic as a child? The answer is no. I was an active kid who liked to ride my bike, but I didn’t participate in any team sports

I came from a small school and did well in cross country running and some track and field events.
I rummaged through some draws in the house and found the ribbons from those events. One of the first things I noticed was no first-place finishes. This is the same as now. When I run, I have a lot of second to fourth-place finishes.
I was your typical skinny teen with no muscle mass to speak of, and this continued into my twenties. I found a couple of fun pictures from my graduation and first wedding. I wore a tux with tails at both events and, of course, a bow tie. My grad may have been the first time I ever wore one.
Fast forward to 30, and we have the picture I usually post of me overweight and holding my son. I did lose weight after this by simply eating less food-no science to it or intelligent training. I just brought one less sandwich to work every day and drew an imaginary circle on my plate for dinner, and ate a portion that fit inside the circle.
I managed to trim down to an acceptable dad bod that I maintained into my 40’s
The truth is my motivation to start training was much deeper than the story that I’ve told in the past.
The story I usually share is when my son was 16. His girlfriend broke up with him a started dating a jock. This made him want a six-pack. I saw this as an opportunity to spend more time together. So we got gym memberships and started to train.
Deeper than this, I felt my life was passing me by. I was divorced and, like many guys, starting over, working to keep a good home for my children to live in. Of course, when you’re divorced, you don’t live in that home.
I shared a basement suite and eventually got a single-bedroom apartment. When the kids came over, they slept in the living room.
But I was missing out on so much. I was getting older, and there were so many things I wanted to see and do.
I needed more time. The only way to accomplish this was to get into the best shape possible and live a longer and healthier life. This was the deeper motivation.
The way I train has changed a lot. It started with a full-body workout a trainer at the gym set up for my son and me. Then, I started doing dumbbell circuits at home, which did a great job of developing my conditioning and was the beginning of my home workouts.
One of the biggest mistakes I made was overdoing it. As I bought more weight, I would strength train 3 or four days a week while bodyweight training on my off days doing progressions working towards front levers and planches. A shoulder injury made me stop, and this is the first year since 2015 my shoulder has been pain-free. Thanks to hanging from a bar for a minute and a half every day.
Early on, my diet was unbalanced lots of protein and veggies and little else. If I overate one day, I would try and make it all up the next day, fasting as long as possible.
Balanced dieting is the best thing I have ever learned. While the focus is on whole food eating, no foods are off the list. If you overeat one day, you don’t have to reduce all those extra calories the next day.
You can spread the reduction out over the next week without any ill effects.
This year's project is to build a natural gym freak physique.

Im 66 now, ive been training for years ive been told i look really good for my age. Problem is im not satisfied with how i feel and look. Honestly, i want a physique similar as yours dt know if thats still achievable with my age and what not. Then i have some health issues, dbl hip replacement new knee and to top it off peripheral neuropathy, not diabetic either my a1c is 5.4 go figure. What do you think? Is there some hope? I have decent equipment at home and a gym membership. I not only want to feel really great, but also turn heads due to my physique at 66. My wife keeps telling me i look really good but like i said i love ur physique, thats head turning imo.

@@eddyjimenez-scorpio you can have that.. if your abs are visible without flexing you're already super lean. But if not most of us combine lowered carbs and additional cardio to strip the fat. Weight training and a good protein intake maintains the muscle.

Your philosophy of not putting a time limit to lose weight. Just changed my mind not to do a 90-day transformation contest. I need to make sure that I am well satiated while doing the daily walks then start to get back into weight training and other ideas. It's summer so now I have until December to gradually take the weight 📴 that took time to put on.

@@cosandreas9414 Thats an excuse and ducking responsibility. It was explained that you either have discipline or you have jealousy/hate... Diet/nutrition is literally 80% of it. There are other cultures where they remain fit until death. In those cultures they eat certain things and do certain things. Like one is cultures where dance is close to the center of the culture, they remain good on their feet well into their 80's and 90's, yes they age but they are still mobile and much more healthy than other cultures. So if a person is still in a making excuses mode, there is an entire new world on the other side of those exuses, which you reach that world by shutting the mouth doing the planning and work.

I am 60, almost 61. Starting over. This morning's upper body workout lasted 46 minutes followed by a 3 mile run. I am 3.5 months into it, and I just broke 30 minutes for 3 miles on the road. Down to 164.5 from 188 in August. Yes, you can still do it at 60.

You inspire me soo much, I thought it was all over for me at 28 because I had a very poor mindset, I just used to game 24/7. But I'm starting to pick myself up. You actually look better at 50-55 than you did at 30, it really is amazing. People associate aging with not looking as good, but that's mainly because people don't take care of themselves. weight lifting later in life is also good for strengthening bones also.

Just came across this video and it is the first time I am seeing your content. Man... what a beautiful, awesome REAL story! Divorce (one of the hardest things one goes through in life), kids, having to make a living and provide for those kids, having to dig deep to create time to take care of one's health while tending to all other demands of life. That is all REAL! I turned 50 this year and I am loving the journey and the struggles, also wanting to live forever for myself, my wife and, most importantly, my beautiful 6-yo little girl. Thank you so much for sharing and for the inspiration, brother! Marcelo.

Thanks for sharing your story, Laurence...and congratulations on being able to maintain and build upon what you started doing those many years ago! I just turned 63 and have been doing home, full-body workouts for the past 2 years. I only have dumbbells and my own body weight at my disposal, but I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. Like you, I wasn't considered a 'jock' in school. I've been overweight most of my life and I still am today, but I feel much better having shed a few pounds and building some muscle that I never really had before. Channels like yours are inspiring and prove that anyone can get into better shape than they were yesterday, if they give themselves a chance and stick to what they're doing while not being afraid to change their habits and routines as is necessary. Thanks again!

Congrats, keep it up and don't ever stop. Diet and exercise is truly the key to life longevity. I can truly relate starting working out in my thirties, and now at 59 yrs old, I am still pushing 3 days on and one off. When people ask me where I find the time to exercise, I tell them that to me, its like you brushing your teeth every day, it is just routine. The time is there, you just have to manage it and just do it! Cheers!

Great video! I’m subscribing. What you said about overdoing it is what happened to me. I am 40 and began my journey at 39. Also had a shoulder injury and stressed the pec near my sternum. I decided to take it a little easier and allow adequate rest. Also implemented cardio and post workout stretching. It is so easy to ego lift and get into trouble.

The one thing I have never heard too much of is that they don't tell you how good it feels to lose the weight I have fought with for ten years. I was 98 kilos and now I am 80 kilos at 5 foot 9.I started Weightlifting and built muscle at 59 till now but I still had a gut. I simply stopped eating too much and I fast for 24 hours every other day. I lost 18 kilos in 20 weeks. I feel great.

Keep doing what you are doing. Full stop. You are in better shape than most people half your age. People need to see what is possible with the work. You are showing people that strength is possible in your 50s, 60s, and beyond. Thank you.

One day I see guys over 50 being fit as the norm, it will take some time to change to focus from making money now, getting things now, immediate self gratification, to a long term healthy life. It isn't easy finding the right balance between what you need to do now and what you need to do to prepare for a better future. But it can be done.

I just started at 45. If you start now you could potentially look way better by the time you’re my age.

very inspiring Lawrence , i had my darkest moments as well , and i was never an athletic but i had a small home gym in my house, at the age 49 i discovered i was type 2 diabetic. i started diet and walking , but no real benefit till my home gym went back in business 14 months ago , lost 50 lb , gained some muscle mass and mostly i reversed my diabetes , A1C now is 5.7 . this was done with your helpful videos and advices and a little knowledge i had when i was young training at the gym . will continue as being healthy became a lifestyle . thanks for your help Lawrence 👍👍👍

GREAT video, love your story. Ive made a negative comment in the past about the bow tie and apologised for it… So it was nice to see a back story to the tie!! 😂😂 I find you a inspiration for us blokes in a similar age bracket. Ive lost 30lbs in the last 12 months and feel i owe you a big thank you as you have played a part in my journey 👍👍👍. However, i am having SERIOUS issues lately with junk food cravings… Great vid. And once again thank you…

Turned 60 this year and while relatively fit, this age change has motivated me to push even harder into a fit and lean body for the future. Taking 6 months off of any alcohol has really helped to jump start the process. Great video and best of luck.
