Yea. Hippies were kicked out of everywhere for their clothes and guys with long hair and especially rock and roll music. Not even allowed in Church. I remember it all.

This song to me was an anthem of rebellion. This was one of my favorite songs when I was late teens early twenties. The signs, to be, are rules that make no sense!! Long haired freaky people(men) where thought to be if no value and not worthy of a job at the owner’s establishment. During that era rules were made to be broken and we surely did!!

These guys are from my home town. We used to get them at our high school dances. Great times.

Hey Greg!!! I know this song comes out with all these outrageous "signs", but believe me, that is the point. As you get through it and then take time to listen again, I am sure you will get what they are saying. I was only a little little girl when it came out but one of my sisters was a "hippie" so I would follow her around, if she let me, lol lol and I learned from her what a lot of these songs and the times were all about. I idolized her and sadly lost her to breast cancer 13 years ago but she left me with so much love and understanding things in a much brighter way. I miss her terribly so when I hear these older tunes, I feel her with me watching this and all reactions. So Thank You for this one, my friend.❣❣🤘🤘😇😇❣❣

Love this band. The Five Man Electrical Band (known as The Staccatos from 1963 to 1968) is a Canadian rock band from Ottawa, Ontario. They had some hits (as The Staccatos) including "Half Past Midnight" & "Small Town Girl". As The Five Man Electrical Band they had some great songs such as "Absolutely Right", "I'm A Stranger Here", "Werewolf", "Signs" etc.

@dagmars.6954 Hello to a fellow Canadian, if you are, and I am in Toronto. I have always loved this song. It sends such a strong message at the time, but also even now, there are so many signs, and the same as back in the 50's. Back then, not that I was even a thought, but the signs then were so gut turning. I am referring to the absolutely disgusting signs about the secreting on buses, certain restaurants, almost just about everywhere. Without me actually blurting out what was said, I still do NOT understand the mentality or lack there of. It still goes on in so many places. I would have thought that in 2023, this world we live in should have us ALL standing together, not on opposite sides.

Back when males grew their hair long aka hippies . Many people hated them . My own father was very vocal about long haired hippies . But his son is a talented bass player and pops band needed one . He changed his mind about the hair . My brothers hair was down to the middle of his back . But his ability proved dad wrong . Public took a dim view of hippies . Some deservedly so . Most no . But there definitely were signs like that .

The song was representative of the counter-culture. Younger people were anti-establishment back in the Woodstock area. The reference to signs is allegorical in nature representative of the limitless societal rules and regulations. Young people today are too caught up in "bread and circuses" to notice the game that is afoot and that's just the way the establishment likes it.

This was the early 70's, you don't understand what they are saying. Back in the late 60's early 70's, there were billboards everywhere to the point you couldn't see anything else. Later in the 70's laws were passed in a lot of state banning them except in certain spots along the roads but farther back.

you have no idea how lucky you are living now. When this song was written long hair was looked down on,there was signs that said no colored people allowed to eat or drink at places. You think things are tough now? you ain't seen nothing. I got thrown in jail for riding my motorcycle through a small town while having long hair. You need to understand what the world was like then, signs posted about everything

You are a bit too young to be doing this reaction. It's signs in general.
