The hamstrings are often weak in problems like jumper's knee or patellofemoral pain syndrome. Weakness and poor activation of the hamstrings commonly originate from hip dysfunction. However, specific strengthening of the hamstrings is necessary along with hip rehabilitation, and this is one great exercise to really target the hamstrings in their true natural function, performing both hip extension and knee flexion simultaneously.
I first saw this exercise at powerlifter Pete Rubish's YT channel many years ago. However, when I tried it myself, it gave me knee pain. I've found the variant that I show here to be easier to pull off without getting any knee pain. It's also great for teaching patients with low back pain to learn hip extension while maintaining a proper lumbosacral arch.
