Thanks for the tip, just on a long trip and Ac went out, so i am driving along adding up all of the money it will cost to fix AC . i did also noticed the coolant reading was out too. Thanks for putting the comment about the AC being inop too
If it's not the thermostat it's the coolant temperature sensor. Cooling system faults cause the computer to disable the AC compressor clutch to reduce engine load and likelihood of overheating. Oh and by the way, get rid of that puddle of antifreeze before the neighborhood cats find it. For some reason cats love the taste of antifreeze but it will kill them.
Tom Alexander Yeah, I could see it if the thermostat was stuck closed, but open? Not! Don't forget to subscribe. More on the HHR on my channel. Thanks for watching.
I have 2006 and my account only works on high now broke I relaxed the head control Ac..used part lasted 3 months.my fluid drained out and didn't say on my dash at all.they say I need a new radiator and hoses 209000.00 original parts. they said that my radiator is plugged in that I need these new parts but I'm going to start with thermostat first
I have the same issue. In the winter time, the temp gauge goes to zero, and the radiator fan magical turns on and stays on, even though it's 30 degrees outside. In the summer, it apparently stays open, and it never has an issue until winter again. I guess I'll have to "grease up my lower extremities" and take it in to get it repaired. I'm too old to do it myself.
I’m having this issue right now. Replaced the thermostat with a AC Delco one and it seemed to be better for about 6 days then started doing it again. Who has actually had this problem and what exactly fixed it? Because I’m wondering if the thermostat I bought is bad or if it could be a coolant temp sensor?
This fixed it for me but may not be your exact issue. The coolant sensor is cheap enough and easy to get to. Could be your new thermostat is failing or you may have air in the system. Hope this helps!
my hhr did the same thing as the video at the beginning of 2022. all i had to do is replace the thermostat went to napa not because of the video but because they were the only auto part store that had a replacement part available. after it was replaced, the gauges worked again. after a couple months so far so good.. even at -25F i have to turn it one click after blue, with the blower turned all the way down. if i dont set it that way i feel like im in an oven.
I have this exactly happening I got this fixed yesterday. Now today all the problems are back. What else could it be or could it be just getting used to it? I spent so much
My 2007 does this! I can reset the temp gauge & coolant degrees to work again by disconnecting the battery, waiting about 10-15 seconds & re-connecting it back.. Temp gauge & coolant starts to work again.. I seem to notice that when this "normally happens", is when I turn the temp setting from cold to heat... After being on heat for a short while is when the temp gauge & read out stops working again.. The temp gauge sensor has been replaced.. Driving my nutso..
I feel your pain, no more! Sold mine after a new engine and teams and 230,000 miles and bought a Silverado. Overall, it was a great car. All the best to you my friend.
My temp is rising and I noticed my key fob isn't working now either. Heat and AC work fine. Could this be a thermostat issue or something else. There are no leaks, fan seems to be fine as well.
Eribush Key fob is a separate issue. Check the cooling fan circuit again. Radiator blocked internally maybe? Could also be the thermostat sticking closed. Hard to tell without seeing the car. I'd get it checked out pronto.
A thermostat is designed to open at 180° so it is supposed to drop to 174° or lower my car shows 96° and beyond so that’s not the issue I’ve changed the thermostat and sending unit it’s gonna bs something else causing the triple dash. It’s not getting a temp. Reading. The AC should work it has nothing to do with the engine temp. The heat may be cooler because the water is cooling off and hot water is used to warm the heater core. I’m willing to bet the heater core is causing this it’s the only part I haven’t checked. When everyone said the butyl patch is why the floors were wet I bet there’s a leak in or around the core and it’s causing it to cool off or not have water around the sending unit to read
Joe Jones same thing has happened my last 3 hhr’s has nothing to due with the thermostat the ac drain tends to leak back into the cabin wetting the electronics I put and l shaped rubber extention with a worm clamp and it never happens again
thanks for the video J! need to ask U a thing. got a leak on my 2009 hhr, and I saw the leak on the top of the thermostat housing, not where the hoose goes but in the other one. could you please tell me the part name and number of that one? I'll really apreciate it.
Everything worked fine after thermostat because it’s a coincidence. Thermostat does nothing electronic at all. It doesn’t talk to anything it’s a spring , the issue is somewhere else. I’ve put new thermostat and temp sensor and three days it triple dashed. My car shows 120° or 60° it’s not because it’s below 172°. There’s a cause and it’s not this
Possibly. Make sure you got all of the air out of the coolant system. Your coolant temperature sensor may be suspect as well. Don't rule out wiring either. Good luck!
Hey just watched your video. My 2006 LT winter beater is having identical issues. Not the Red SS on my profile pic but rather a cherry 2LT that I love. It has been a great car. Currently, the coolant readout is showing nothing. I have the AC Delco thermostat arriving tomorrow Rock Auto. You mentioned in your video there was a code you had to clear? I did not see a CEL on your dash. What code do I clear? I have an obd2 scan tool. Everything else looks straight forward I am just confused about the code you cleared. I am assuming if I do not clear this supposed code, my gauge will not work. Anyways, any insight would be great thanks. 👍 By the way I enjoy your video:)
@jhuntosgarage Heyyyy thanks for responding:) so clear all DTC's? I have ramps could I put the front end on ramps and allow the car to burp itself with it running and the radiatior cap off?
TheSil3ntNINja $400??? Huge rip off! 10 mm socket and a way to get the hose clamps off and on. Basic tools. The most difficult part of this job is burping the coolant system.
So will this cause Cool fluid to leak I have a 08 HHR and cool fluid leaks out anytime i fill it up and my ac doesn't work and this last time my father-in-law drive my car it overheated so he had the bright idea to put water in my car that leaked out everywhere also before that last year I was at appointment just got oil change and cool fluids and my cool leaked everywhere while I was in the building so now after about 20 minutes or more my car reaches Temperatures of 200 to 250 ac/heat doesn't work there a bad smell coming from my vents and at times a little bit of white smoke comes from around my intake area can anyone help me with information because I not trying to have to by a new car or engine at this moment but if I do I do I guess
Sounds like you have a few issues. No, this does not cause coolant leaks. Sounds like you have a coolant leak somewhere, possibly a cylinder head gasket if coolant isn't visible on the ground.
Would have been good while you were replacing the sensor. If it's all back together and it's not running hot I'd leave it until it starts having problems.
Kimberly Camp You may have a defective thermostat, mine wasn't very old either. The thermostat in this video is from Napa if I remember correctly. The one I took out was from Autozone. That's the one that wasn't very old.
J. Hunto's Garage it was replaced back in October and was fine till two days ago. My check engine light is on too. They work sometimes but go back off a little later. I'm confused.
Kimberly Camp You need to get someone to read the code or, better yet, buy a code reader and read them yourself so you get the honest information. If the temp gage does not get up to its normal position the thermostat is sticking open; which is better than sticking closed. You can get a Topdon code reader pretty cheap. See my channel for a review and link.
Depends on where in the country you are. It doesn't take very long and there's not much money in parts. I'd call around if you have the time and ask others if they know of an honest shop. They can be hard to find.
